baroclinic_instability
I decided to take a short trip to the Front Range of Colorado since I am so close in North Platte. I have a few friends at NCAR--so it worked out well as they gave me a brief tour of Boulder and NCAR as well as Rocky Mountain National Park. Pictures are from NCAR Mesa Lab, the Flatirons in the foothills, and Rocky Mountain National Park. I used to forecast in Salt Lake City, so it was really nice seeing the other side of the Rockies. Can't wait to visit all the other intermountain west states.
baroclinic_instability
The 6th picture here is a gorgeous series of mountain waves/lenticulars which set up that afternoon. We were in decent west flow with a low amplitude wave ejecting into the plains at this moment. A good setup that day for mountain wave activity. baroclinic_instability
really beautiful series! Nice pics! Boulder is a beautiful place to visit. Thanks guys! It was great fun. I loved the contrast of the dry, somewhat golden color of the Front Range to the snowy and green RMNP. It was quite the contrast considering it was only 15 miles apart. I guess 6000 feet of elevation difference will do that
Parsley
I visited Boulder around Memorial Day back in 2008. What a place! Of course I had to drag my wife a few hours west so I could see the continental divide. She wasn't as in awe as I was. I loved how it was in the 60s and 70s in Boulder and close to freezing still up at Loveland Pass.

What a change to this spring since it has been one of the driest in the climactic record this winter. Everything is brown except the pine trees. They need some rain, however...the first year Niña winters have a reputation of being stingy in CO, but this is ridiculous!

tacoman25
It definitely looks much more beautiful around here when the spring rains/snows green everything up and full bloom occurs. Still waiting for that to happen...though there is definitely more green now than a couple weeks ago.
baroclinic_instability
Did you make it into the town of Estes Park? Indeed I did. We headed up into RMNP from Fort Collins to Loveland up 34. Estes Park was a really neat town and fun to visit; I do want to go back sometime. One of the guys in the office here is also from Estes Park as well. I had gone a few years ago in late Feb/Early March so we couldn't go further than the town as the rest of the parkw as closed. Great little town though.
