CoCoRaHS Training

For the greater Springfield, MA area

Wanted- volunteers of all ages to help scientists study storms! Join the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow (CoCoRaHS) Network! Everyone can participate- all you need is enthusiasm for watching and reporting weather conditions and a desire to learn more about how weather can affect and impact our lives.

There will be a CoCoRaHS training and informational seminar on Friday March 25th from 1 to 3 pm. The seminar will take place at the Springfield Fire Station at 1212 Carew Street- parking located next door at the Van Sickle School. This Seminar is open to anyone interested in becoming a CoCoRaHS observer and to current CoCoRaHS members who would like to receive refresher training. The training will be conducted by the National Weather Service Taunton, Massachusetts office. The National Weather Service would like to recruit more CoCoRaHS observers in and around the Connecticut River Basin, in an attempt to improve the quality of river forecasts and Flood Warnings. If you have an interest in observing the weather, please plan on attending this seminar.

Anyone across southern New England is welcome to become a CoCoRaHS observer! Additional information on the CoCoRaHS program is available at http://www.cocorahs.org .

I've never understood the difference between cocorahs and skywarn

CoCoRAHS is something like a real time climate site for precipitation, while SKYWARN is short fuse reporting to help the NWS verify severe weather, flood and winter weather warnings. Think of CoCoRAHS as helping the NWS verify flood warnings and to monitor for heavy rainfall at sites in between regular reporting sites. That's how CoCoRAHS was formed, due to a catastrophic flood in Fort Collins, Colorado in 1997. The state climatologist and others wanted to form a network of reporters to share data, and grew by leaps and bounds. Here's the history: http://www.cocorahs....px?page=aboutus

So, there is a difference, yes.
