  1. Wow, what a pleasantly overperforming snow this morning. This is our best steady snow of the storm so far in DTSS. Looks like a solid inch on the driveway I shoveled last night. Love it!
  2. Very light snow now in Silver Spring. Hey, at least it's better than than watching those radar blobs pass us by all morning.
  3. You guys want to send some of that precip over to DC? I'm watching the radar echoes pretty much spin around the city. Still quiet and 28 degrees here just north of DTSS.
  4. No evidence of any substantive snow or ice last night (north of downtown silver spring). Neighbor's 15 ft bamboo plants are still vertical, and they'd be the first to lean.
  5. Teachers are home with even fewer options for child care than before. Some kids can't get to their virtual learning locations. District offices are closed, and above all else, many students simply won't be present with snow outside. That's before any consideration of power outages, which have been few with this storm. I'm not arguing that school is impossible, but this is all still new and it's not a trivial decision. On the other hand, MCPS did elect to keep virtual learning intact, so it's definitely case by case. We'll see how it goes with MCPS and whether it's a disaster of teachers taking personal days to care for kids, and absent students.
  6. I agree - days like today are always disappointing, but it's still enough snow to play and sled and have a snowball fight. The real busts are days like Mar 2013 that just kill your soul.
  7. Not doing a proper snow board, but there's a solid 2" on smooth surfaces right now (a bit north of DTSS). It's enough for the kids to throw snowballs and sled, not enough to really go nuts or bother shoveling yet. Essentially nothing but snow dust right now. Its not accumulating. (eta at 2:33pm it's legitimately snowing again)
  8. The Amazon guys are still out making their rounds. Maybe that's our new threshold for a winter storm?
  9. Why am I sitting here analyzing HRRR dry slots instead of enjoying the snow while it falls?
  10. 28.8 / 27.6, both just about rock solid since 4am, with a coating to a half inch of snow on the ground and very light snow falling. . A mile north of downtown silver spring.
  11. Silver Spring on this calm evening: 26.4/15.7 at 7:45 27.1/16.6 at 8:15 28.4/18.2 at 9:20 30.2/18.4 at 11:00
  12. Silver Spring temp and dp slowly rising this evening: 26.4/15.7 at 7:45 27.1/16.6 at 8:15 28.4/18.2 at 9:20
  13. Had to check the anemometer wasn't stuck, but my high gust since sunset is... 0 mph. It's dead quiet out there for now. Full moon is rising behind some thin clouds and that's about it.
  14. 30.9/14.0 at 5:55pm 27.7/14.9 at 6:55pm 26.4/15.7 at 7:45 27.1/16.6 at 8:15 Silver Spring, inside the beltway

  17. Wobble-watching on the 1 minute refresh GOES-16 is a whole other level of crazy.
  18. Yeah, I believe psuhoffman was vocal about that tradeoff in the last thread. If you want to avoid any chance of mix whatsoever, get ready for a colder, dry storm. That's not an unreasonable trade to make, but it won't give you the 20" HECS
  19. Therein lies the difficulty with apps and websites (and even newspapers to an extent) that are limited to a single icon to define the day's weather. It may well mix in between snow batches, but this has never looked like a long-term, infrastructure-crippling ice storm.
  20. CWG has an updated map out that isn't drastically different: https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2021/01/30/washington-dc-winter-storm-snow/#click=https://t.co/fpM4o6Jh69 imrs.webp
  21. I'm seeing close to a foot for DC proper on the 6z Euro but a number of disappointed posters. Who got shafted this morning? South of the city? Honestly if we get 6" (DC) I'll be thrilled. It's not like there's much difference in fun or beauty between 6 and 12", and the latter is twice the shoveling.
  22. There are always fewer people posting inside the beltway than I expect, but I'm one who is more than happy with the 18z VS 12z, at least if you take them at face value. Things are coming together nicely for a good DC snow.
  23. If you had to pick one with no other information, the Euro operational run is pretty solid at that range.
