I recall before the larger storm 5th-7th in Feb 2010 there was 7-10 in of snow around Jan 30-31; before that it had been mild with rain around Jan 26th. Then there was a third snowfall event around Feb 10th.

I'm further west and south, so missed some of the craziness, but this is what I got those couple of weeks

Digging thru the record books, I see 4, yes 4 only times I've had a +50 low in January. Jan 15, 1995 (54 degrees), Jan 5, 2004 (55.7 degrees), Jan 5,2005 (53.6 degrees), and Jan 12,2020 at 51.2 degrees. Today will make another as low at 7 am was 50.7 degrees (borrowing a miracle). My records go back to Oct 1979.

Well, this won't come to pass, down to 48.9 degrees at 8:50 pm. DID set a new record high, 68.6 degrees, old was 62 degrees from both 1981 and 2012.

Just glanced at my monthly stats, I've been +50 degrees for 2 hours this entire month to current, that was on the 12th with a 50.9 high. According to NWS Blacksburg I should cross 50 today with a forecasted 58 high, but they failed badly yesterday with a 53 forecasted and an actual of 44.7. We shall see.

Me and my big mouth.... So, crossed 50 around 2 pm yesterday, been ABOVE it since. High was 55.3 degrees. Currently 50.7/49.8 and foggy. Sheesh.

EDIT- the 43.0 degree 7 am reading yesterday shattered the previous 'warm minimum' for the date, old was 38 degrees from 1989. Not sure why I didn't check until now. I see more records coming.

I left at 7:30 and...too late for that today. Almost a dead stop at the Hereford zone ramp and bumper to bumper whole way down. No accidents, just fog and volume and rain. 85 minutes.

If the Euro's right, we pop a +30F above normal day on Friday.  GFS keeps the boundary more to the south.  When was the last -30F below normal day at any time?  Quick glance...the pre-Xmas December 2022 cold shot didn't do it.  No days in February 2015 reached that (although almost).  January 1994 got a -35F departure at DCA.  Anything since then?

made me 'check' lol. I have 2 -35's, both in Jan. First was 1/21/85 with a 8 high and -19 low. Second was 1/19/94 with a 9 high and -17 low. That week (1/15-1/22/94) was MOST impressive, I ran a -25 average thru that period with 6 out of seven nights below zero.

EDIT, missed at least one. Christmas Day 1983, -35 avg, 9 high, -10 low.

  8. I must be living the 'sheltered' life. I see LOTS of 50's thru almost 70 for yesterday. I was stuck in low 40's all day with very thick fog and drizzle! Currently fog and drizzle (as last almost 24 hours) and 43.0/41.9. My high for past 24 hours was 44.7. I checked, both Covington CO-ops in low/mid 40's along with White Sulphur Springs and Lewisburg in WV for their high. Strange.

    *takes a glance at stats**

We average about15 inches of snow a year. So we are only about half to AVERAGE.

Its truly hilarious that 1 week of winter and 8 inches of snow totally erases the last 8 years for you all and you somehow think we are doing great. LOL!

    *Takes quick glance at stats*

So, Newark is about 50/50 BWI to PHL, BWI seasonal average to date is 6.9 and PHL is 8.0, so I'll go 7. If you are at 8, then you ARE running above average. Would we ALL like to have more? You bet! But saying this past week wasn't good and a relief to many snow starved folks is a bit much.

You missed a few (and most important) words in my comment.... just saying. You are AHEAD of average ATM, enjoy!

People act like our little 1 week of winter where we got 8 inches of snowfall suddenly makes up for the last 8 years of garbage. It doesn't. We are still below average for the year even.

  11. Well, no matter what happens the rest of the winter, this PAST week has been nice. Snow cover a week plus with temps running a solid -10. It was 23.5 here this morning for the low, currently cloudy and 39.4/19.9 at 12:15 pm.

  12. Back to an even freezing at 6:30 after a 42.3 high. Currently 32.0/16.5. Lost about 1/2 the snow today, bare ground in spots facing south and open, about 3-4 inches in 'drifted' areas shaded.

I’m glad to see a pro met here disputing the map. You can do whatever you want with this info, as I believe you work for NWS?

There are a number of issues with that map, particularly with southern Maryland. You may have seen my complaint earlier ITT about how my spotter reports disappeared. I E-mailed LWX asking why.

The issue seems to be that this year they started using “Dept of Highways” measurements in the PNS reports, which are not accurate IMHO. They told me that because I live next to State Highway, we both came up as “Prince Frederick 1 S” so their software must have overwritten my reports. I was told not to worry though, that my reports are still in their system. I don’t believe that explanation, as my reports are not on this map, nor on LWX site. Furthermore, I sent my report in- twice- with a timestamp after State Highway, and yet it still is not there anywhere. They used the larger total from State Highway (2.5”) to make a 2” contour over Calvert.

I reported 1.4” while State Highway had 2.5” There is zero chance State Highway is correct- all I can think of is that State Highway measures snow depth. I have clear visibility of their entire site, there is definitely no snowboard, nor any open place for them to measure.

I also questioned the lack of spotter reports for Calvert, they told me I was the only spotter that sent in a report in Calvert. I have no idea if that’s accurate or not, but it seems odd. I always see multiple reports from Calvert with any storm.

So if you see any spots on that map whose totals seem odd, check and see if it was based on a “Dept. of Highways” measurement. I doubt I was the only one with this issue.

That 6.8 was measured by a highway worker, probably in a snow pile. no where close to 6.8 in the monkton area.

Just gonna throw my 0.02 in here. Not sure about NWS Sterling, but Blacksburg made a BIG push for CoCoRaHS folks and trained spotters to please send in snow reports, especially if using snowboards, sending emails out to folks. WHY would the Dept Of Highways suddenly be the 'source' for reports if that is the case? I've never seen a snowboard placed next to a road or highway, or seen a state truck stop and take a measurement, just saying.
