  1. The snowpack at the Mt. Mansfield Stake appears to have taken a recent 8” jump to get to 22”, so we’re really knocking on the door to 24” now. With the density of this snow that just fell, it would be very surprising if they didn’t hit 24” by tomorrow.

With Winter Storm Malcolm moving into the area early this morning, there was a major PNW vibe around in the valley – we had huge, moisture-laden flakes falling all morning at the house, and driving through just 2-3” of unplowed snow on the road felt like you were moving through concrete. It reminded me of being back at Snoqualmie Pass/Alpental. I gave Mother Nature some time to continue putting down the new snow, then headed up to the mountain for a session this afternoon. I’d brought gear for both skinning and lift-served skiing, unsure about whether or not there would be COVID-19-related lift queues. When I reached the Timberline Base and saw the Timberline Quad running for the first time this season with virtually nobody there, it was an easy decision to opt for lift-served. There were actually no queues at any of the lifts this afternoon, and it was walk-up all the time with numerous empty chairs, so presumably the opening of more terrain took care of any issues that had been creating backups. In terms of the snow, it was unquestionably dense down at 1,500’. I was actually happy with my choice to go with lift-served turns because I appreciated having some packed snow in places and the ability to wander off to the sides into the powder as desired. The powder would have been a bit easier on my fat skis, but on my midfat Teles it was definitely a workout staying for long periods in the deep, dense untracked snow. I was happy for some quick reprieves on the groomed areas. Groomed terrain was skiing very nicely – the packed snow was certainly dense, but not to the level of that slick, wet pack snow that can get rather grabby. The snow got substantially drier with elevation – in the top 500’ of vertical, say from the Vista Summit on down to 2,600’ or 2,700’, the snow was in a totally different league relative to the base. Jumping into untracked powder made for smooth, easy turns; the snow had just lost enough density that it just wasn’t pushing me around on my midfat Teles. Down below those elevations, the powder began to get a bit more dense, but you could definitely give yourself and extra margin of comfort on a pair of alpine fat skis, or especially a snowboard. As of this afternoon’s additional snow from the storm, we’d picked up 1.09” of liquid equivalent down at the house, so the mountains must have had at least that much, and whatever they did get, it represented a major resurfacing of the slopes. Ropes were dropping all over the place, and within one trip over to the main mountain, I came back to find that they’d opened up Tattle Tale, apparently even the steep headwall section, which speaks to how meaty this snow was. They even had Spillway open on all natural snow, and that’s a steep minefield of boulders and stumps. I figured people were just poaching it until I saw the rope opened at the top. In terms of the depth of new snow that fell from Winter Storm Malcolm, it was difficult to tell because there was already some decent loose snow below this new stuff, and there hasn’t been a major thaw in quite a while to consolidate the base. When I got off the top of the Timberline Quad at the Timberline Summit, I stuck in my measurement pole and it went up to 18”. This represented the entire snowpack at that elevation from what I could tell. Based on occasional probing around and measuring during the afternoon, I came to the conclusion that there must have been at least 8” that had fallen up high, and the resort’s afternoon report says 8” at elevation, so that makes sense. I’ve added a few shots from the afternoon at Bolton Valley below, and you can see from that first shot how the dense snow down at 1,500’ was giving the area a definite PNW feel:
  3. Here’s the north to south listing of available snowfall totals from the Vermont ski areas for Winter Storm Malcolm thus far, using data from areas that have made an afternoon update. When MRG came in with 10” as I was working my way down, I figured totals would be well into the teens by the time I got to the southern part of the state, but there were notable ups and downs, and only modest additional increases topping out at the 12” mark.   4. I haven’t felt that the ECMWF model has picked up terrain nuances/upslope as well as many of the other models lately, for whatever reason.
  5. Ahh, roger that, just needed clarification, it sounds like you’ve got it. I think we’ve got the appropriate analogy for upslope on the back side of synoptic storm in the NNE thread now.

  7. On that note, it looks like the flow is starting to shift on the radar. You can see the echoes just beginning to push past the Chittenden/Washington county line and the snow is starting to pick up here.

  9. I just got back from an afternoon session at the mountain, and even with just this first part of Winter Storm Malcolm, there’s really only one way to describe its impact for the resorts around here…
  10. “Sigh” You’re getting there I guess. The first usage is close, but you still need some work on the analogy. It looks like almost a week of a bread and butter-style pattern after this storm passes. If you’re responding to PF’s post regarding this storm’s upslope component, that’s not the correct analogy at all. If this storm was bread and butter we’d probably average 500-600” of snow a season. Don’t make me go Miyagi on you; Phin helped set up the appropriate analogy for this type of system a while back:
  11. Event totals: 2.2” Snow/0.83” L.E. Well, Winter Storm Malcolm is certainly delivering in the liquid equivalent department here, with 0.83” of L.E. as of the 12:00 P.M. observations. I’ve caught a lot of it in the snow cores thus far (0.60”), but when the snow is super waterlogged the way it is down at this elevation, you know there’s probably some liquid sneaking off the sides of the snowboards as it percolates though. Thankfully the gauge is catching everything. Thus far this has been a huge boon to bolstering the total liquid in the snowpack down here in the valley, and it should be even better for the resorts at elevation. The precipitation here at our site was snow all morning, then a healthy mix of types at midday/observations time, but it’s transitioned back to all snow since then. Details from the 12:00 P.M.   12. Ahh, I was thinking Norwich was in Orange County, but I see it’s actually in Windsor County, right on the Orange/Windsor line. Where was your previous spot? Windsor goes surprisingly far north!
  13. There’s a definite bump for the Mt. Mansfield area at elevation on the latest Event Total Snowfall map as I mentioned above, and the BTV NWS AFD talks about it: Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Burlington VT 640 AM EST Sat Jan 16 2021 NEAR TERM /THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 453 AM EST Saturday... Quite the impressive satellite imagery this morning with water vapor showing moisture exploding northward ahead of surface low pressure developing west of the benchmark and south of Long Island Sound. Latest RAP analysis shows pressure falls taking the low directly north up the CT River Valley, placing the forecast area in the sweet spot for QPF with the latest HREF and NAM3 showing upwards of 1.5" of liquid across the higher peaks through 00Z Sunday.
  14. I’m assuming that’s for Orange County? They must have just done that, because I definitely would have noted it if they’d managed to get it on the overnight advisories map. The only addition I saw at that point was the one for Addison County.
  15. This storm has started up here, so the overnight BTV NWS map updates will be the last ones ahead of the storm. For the advisories map, the notable change around here was the pushing of Winter Storm Warnings northward into eastern Addison County. For the Event Total Snowfall map, a quick toggling between this version and the previous one shows some increases in projected accumulations along the higher elevations of the spine, with some decreases in the Champlain Valley, Upstate New York, and some lower elevations to the east and west. An area of 18-24” shading has appeared in the Mt. Mansfield stretch of the spine, and the point forecast there is topping out around 26” on top of whatever they picked up overnight. The point forecast at our site has seen a small bump to the 6-12” range, which I would typically expect to be form the back side/upslope portion, but it generally seems to be due to the fact that the forecast for today was increased to the 3-7” range.

  17. The BTV NWS map updates for the afternoon are in, and I’ve added them below. Winter Storm Warnings are now appearing in a number of areas, and there was a definite bump upward in the projected accumulations map; accumulation tiers have been pushed outward a bit from the spine, and there’s a touch of that 18-24” shading appearing in the Rutland area. Our forecast has seen just a slight uptick here, with something in the 4-10” range expected through Sunday at 7:00 P.M.

You live up here in the mountains, so you know the deal; our Subies don’t get daily washes so they can sit in the driveway to get gawked at by the neighbors – they’re too busy doing their real job of actually getting us up our driveway.
  19. It looks like we’ve gotten to the point where BTV NWS can decide what they want to do with respect to alerts and projected accumulations for incoming Winter Storm Malcolm. There are Winter Weather Advisories across a lot of the north country, with some Winter Storm Watches farther south. Projected accumulations through 7:00 P.M. Sunday look like they're topping out in the 12-18” range along the spine based on the shading. The point forecast here at our site in the valley suggests 4-9” through the period, which seems in synch with the 6-8” shading for our area, and the 10-18” for the Mansfield elevation forecast jives as well.

We’re loving the mountain snowfall details along the spine as always, but most importantly at this stage of the season, it’s good to see that they’re feeling the potential is there to put down that base snow we need. I didn’t see it in the current discussion, but if they want to discuss the amount of L.E. going into the snowpack, we’re also happy to hear about that. On that note, I cored the pack here at our site ahead of this next system to see what this system does down here in the valley overall. The L.E. in the snowpack here came in at 1.01” this morning, which is about what I expected.
  21. So Phin… as I sit here enjoying your various (enthusiastic) posts in the thread, I’m going to suggest taking a moment to reflect on the state of affairs with regard to the upcoming weather. I know you’ve been looking for that slam dunk, knock-it-out-of-the-park, wall-to-wall snow, big synoptic storm to hit your NNH place. It’s not that those don’t happen sometimes, but in my opinion, the real magic up here in the mountains of NNE is the ability for respectable wintry things to happen in many, many different setups/patterns. I really have no idea if this is a “good” weather pattern, or “bad” weather pattern, because the whole concept seems highly subjective and nuanced anyway, and it gets muddied even more when weenies are involved. In any event, I’d just say think about where you sit with respect to snow potential for this upcoming storm relative to 99% of the population of the east coast. We obviously don’t yet know how this storm is going to turn out, but even just the lead up you’re experiencing right now is something you can hopefully stick in your pocket and pull out the next time you’re stressed about how the winter has been going.
  22. Thanks PF – I do see that there’s some mention of QPF amounts now in the latest BTV NWS AFD., but I wanted to get your thoughts on the synoptic/upslope L.E. split since you had that map. It sort of feels like the BTV NWS is in a bit of a holding pattern on this storm with no headline yet, but maybe they’re waiting because the potential outcomes is still so dicey here, or they just consider it one of those storms where the impacts of significance are all so high in elevation that there’s no big concerns for where the bulk of the population lives. If they’re going to do a headline or any additional advisories, I guess there’s still 24 hours for them to assess model output.
  23. That’s great PF – 0.5”+ of L.E. would be a significant addition to the snowpack at the resorts. Of course, it looks like it’s a NAM-based accumulations map, so it’s presumably overdone on L.E. unless they have fixed that issue. The good news is that whatever happens on the front end of this storm, it’s still likely to be an addition to the L.E. in the snowpack for the mountains. Whether it’s rain, slop, wet snow, snow, whatever, it doesn’t seem that the warmer parts of this storm really have a combination of L.E., temperatures, and duration around here that the snowpack in the mountains couldn’t handle it. Even down here in the valley, the snowpack could certainly take some liquid, because it’s actually still somewhat dry. I was shoveling off our deck the other day, and the snow was still powdery all the way through (I was worried that it would have been wet and adhered to the deck, but it was all dry). It’s certainly a dense powder (the total snowpack here has a bit over an inch of liquid in it, although I’m not sure when I last cleared the snow from the deck), but there’s still room for some liquid. I know from being up at the mountain that the snowpack is pretty dry there as well, and even more substantial overall. How much L.E. are you expecting from the front end of the storm?

I totally agree that they’re hitting things correctly for the majority of the population, but I guess I’m just used to the way the BTV NWS typically seems to give sufficient attention to the mountains as well. Doesn’t GYX cover the Presidentials? Obviously there’s no population there, but it’s a huge alpine recreation area of interest to a lot of people, and it’s hard to believe that it’s simply going to be all rain there. Does the weather in the Presidentials get covered only in a special recreation forecast? I guess ultimately these AFDs aren’t really for the public anyway, but the BTV NWS clearly knows that skiers and other mountain recreationalists are using them. I find them to be an excellent resource when trying to plan ahead for skiing, other winter recreation, etc.
