No kidding about the vertigo above tree-line at a-basin! For the last run of the day we had to ski from the top of Beavers down the front side to the base in snow and fog. It wasn't just that the light was flat, we literally couldn't tell up from down. All the expert skiers looked like we'd never been on skis before until reaching the trees.

Looks like another epic weekend for the northeast! Will be at Killington/Pico Friday-Monday. Pretty amazing how great this season has been considering the positive temperature departures.

I got vertigo skiing at Mt Batchelor years ago. Skiing from the summit and no trees to give the snow much definition.

Legit concern especially if we get a late season cold snap.

Last year as you probably know we had no peaches and very few plums or cherries on trees around here.  The apple crop was also negatively impacted.  My friend owns Headwater Cider and he could barely press last year.
Maple syrup season is also going to suck if the temperatures are not getting below freezing at night.

No apples at all last Fall where I live.  The May 17th frost/freeze did severe damage. Some parts of Connecticut dipped into the 20's for several hours.

  3. I'm a bit late with posting this.  But I took my final  adaptive skiing lesson on Sunday 2/25. At Ski Sundown.  It was a beautiful bluebird day with temperatures in the middle 30's. I skied there 4 times this season.  1/31, 2/5, 2/15 and 2/25. It was lot's of fun,  with freindly instructors. I had one more lesson booked for 3/6. But it looks like they might not make it that late, with rain and 60F temperatures in the forecast.

That was a nice little ski area in the heart of the valley. Yeah, multiple bad years in a row is nothing new in SNE.

I skied there shortly before they closed for good in March of 1998. It was a descent place for it's location.  With a 750' vertical drop.

Hopefully late mid-Morch they start budding

Hopefully not. The frost / freeze we had last May, severely Damaged the budding apple trees. My local orchard had no apples last Fall.

Well to be fair..an inch isn’t very much, and your rates weren’t too good, so you have to factor that in too. We had two inches here, and it stuck to the roads fine until it slowed down and stopped.  But ya…low sun angle is better for retention, and sticking with paltry rates.  But beggars can’t be choosers.

I need to have that coastal next Saturday to hammer NNE. If it does it’s game on for more March sledding. And that’s a win for me.

The sun angle is definitely having a bigger affect on snow-cover. Now in late February.

  7. I'm a little late posting this report.  I was at Ski Sundown on Wednesday 2/14 for my third lesson.  It was the best skiing conditions of the year with 4" of new snow. It was cold and windy. Making things a bit uncomfortable at times. Ski Sundown isn't making snow anymore.  So it was probably my last chance to ski packed powder. I took 5 runs off the summit.  Including the last run down a freshly groomed Canyon.  Unfortunately while skiing down the run. The Sno Cart left ski dug into the soft snow and released, causing me to tip over. I'm okay, but that scared me a bit. And I quit for the night.

This past week would have been so much better in December with low sun angle . This is precisely as we’ve discussed. Once into early/ mid Feb and beyond it takes away the wintry feel. Even in the 20’s today the snow only stuck on the back roads .. and the coast and valleys start meriting as soon as it ends . Why can’t we just get snow in December

Yeah I noticed that.  The snow today didn't strick to pavement very well,  even with the temperatures at 28F . The roughly 1" of snow from this morning is gone.

If you can get yourself closer to the center line…..on the edge of the total path you’ll only get a matter of seconds in darkness…..at the center it will be like 3:15 or 3:30…..minutes…..

That's the plan if the weather is good.

  10. I skied at Ski Sundown last night for my adaptive skiing lesson.  At first I tried a mono ski.  But I couldn't balance myself with my arms and kept falling over. So we switched over to there brand new Rossignol Snow Cart.

This cart let's me lye down and control the ski's with poles.  I can snowplow,  turn and brake to control my speed.  Unfortunately I can't use it solo as the base is spring loaded for boarding a chairlift.  The chairlift has to be stopped for loading.

We took 3 Runs down from the summit.  Tom's Treat, Canyon and Nor'Easter. It felt good to ski these trails again. I got some speed on these trails. There a nice group of people.  Very friendly and Patient.  My next lesson is on February 7th.
