1. I threw 8-12" out there a couple of days ago and haven't really strayed from it although I was thinking, this morning anyway, that western Orange may be around 6". I think that higher ratios will save us.

    High ratios FTW!

Albany snow map shows me straddling the 11" contour in Dutchess. We will see. I think there could be some surprises (good and bad!) with this storm. Such an explosive set-up.

  2. Hey Radders, I 'm getting from some other threads that theres another storm around this time next week, did you see anything with that, snow around here?

Yeah, there is something brewing around 180 hours that points to a low pressure developing on an arctic front... Looks like it could be interesting for our area, especially to our north. Higher heights/thicknesses would take NYC out of the game verbatim right now, but obviously this is a ways out.

What is your prediction for tonight? I would be happy with anything in the 6-10 range.

  3. Yeah it is pretty amazing how the coast continues this run of monster storms. 6-10 looks like a solid call for the area.

It's amazing.. I sometimes feel like it is a cruel joke. I moved up here from Brooklyn in Nov 2009, and ever since then, they have had epic snowstorms lmaosmiley.gif

This year is certainly better, but I feel like I have yet to experience a more "typical" HV winter, where we cash in as those south and east get relatively screwed with BL issues.

Having said that, Feb 26th 2010 still wins in terms of prolific snowfall totals, but as Rob has said, it was a miserable wet snow with so much damage.

I am hoping we can get a foot out of this one. West trends are encouraging... We need to see the upper level vort coming across the MW, come in a tad stronger, and the coastal a tad weaker, then the precip shield should expand west a little, and the larger totals would move closer to our area.

  4. You're going to have very nice ratios up there. Even down here in Southern Westchester at 350' elevation, I'm thinking at least 12:1 ratios for this storm since 850s are like -6C, and I expect the storm to occur overnight which should hold temperatures in the mid 20s. This is another cold storm like 12/26, albeit with less wind, which should promote better dendrite formation. I'm liking the chances for 8-12" for NYC metro including the extreme NW areas...you might see a little less QPF than LI, but you'll be vastly colder.

Completely agree with your thoughts... If things stay as they are, I would say a good 8-12" for the area.

BTW, did you see the 15Z SRFs? Very bullish.. Some of the members clobber the mid hudson valley, especially north of here up towards Albany.

  5. How are temps in the upper levels? Surface temps? Ratios? You da man! :)

850s look to be -8C for the area, don't have great graphics so they could be a cooler than that, but we are easily in that contour.

Surface temps are you would expect, are in the mid 20s, maybe lower 20s since this is mainly and overnight hit...

I would say we get decent ratios up here given those stats.

  6. LOL, we're always teaching our kids something.

Radders, I thought of you when I saw you got upgraded earlier. Still snowing over here even though there's not much on the radar, big beautiful flakes just floating down, good stuff. It looks like 5" IMBY.

Looks like it has stalled about 10 miles east of me.. Still keeping an eye on it, but I think I am just about done with around 4 inches total. I'll take it.. Beautiful out, dog loves it!

  7. I am up to 3 inches now... Still lagging from the rest of you, but I have made a bit of a recovery and it is still snowing.. Maybe I can get another inch. It is funny, because I just noticed I have been upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning!!

Edit - I just did proper measurement - 4 inches on the nose. Light snow still falling.

  8.
Dunno, but POU climo records are kept by the NWS in Albany. Maybe on their website someplace: http://www.erh.noaa.gov/aly/

But generally they give the snowfall for a winter season as in 2009-10, 2010-2011. I'm sure you could access monthly climo records somewhere and compile a calendar year total.

Caveat to that: I believe the actual airport in POU got a lot less in that February storm...... Crazy storm where northern/central Dutchess had mostly rain and southernmost Dutchess mostly snow

Amazing differences over short distances...

I live 3 miles south of the airport, and have a little more elevation (350 feet here) and I had 22 inches on top of the 7 inches a few days earlier, and I had depths of nearly 30 inches in my front yard... 3 miles north of me, I would say that they had 10 inches at best. Another 3 miles north, 4 inches. Conversely, I actually think that Fishkill and Beacon ended up with more than me!
  9. Just a quick question for anyone here. Do we have final snow fall totals for the 2010 year-specifically Dutchess County? I have a bet with one of my kids of how much we had. :) I figure close to 57. We had the 30 or so in Feb. and then close to 20 here in December. Do I have a chance to win this? LOL

Here are my totals for 2010:

    Jan

    01/02 | 2"

    01/03 | 2.5"

    01/08 | 2"

    01/28 | 4"

    Jan Total: 10.5

    Feb

    02/03 | 1"

    02/10 | 6"

    02/17 | 6"

    02/24 | 7"

    02/25-02/26 | 22"

    Feb Total: 42"

    Dec

    12/13 | 1.5"

    12/26 | 16"

    Dec Total: 17.5"

    Grand Total: 70"

I am up on Rt 28 between Hopewell Junction and Rt 9, so it can't be far off of what you had in Fishkill. Hope that helps.

  10. I have to go into the city on average a couple days a month. If I am really busy I will take a motel such as in Ardsley or like Bellerose, Queens and do a two day stint. I need to get documents for my research business at the courts etc. down there and some can only be obtained terrestrially. Also I occasionally have to testify in Surrogate's Court in one of the boroughs.

I can't imagine how anyone could deal with that traffic and pace of life as a regular commuter. I am adept at it .....know the city very well all over, but a couple days is all I could take. LOL

I can't tell you how happy I am when I leave it in the rear view mirror and keep driving further and further north. :)

I have to go to the city one or two days a week and I hop on the Hudson Line which is really not too bad, considering my office is near Grand Central. However, I am glad that I only generally do the commute a couple of times a week - more often than not, just once a week.. It is just enough to give me the novelty of the city, but I am much happier working from home out of my home office!!thumbsupsmileyanim.gif
