I would argue it is not small.. every person I talk to about Corona Virus, I ask them one question.. "do you know any one who died of it"
And almost invariably the answer is "you know its weird.. but I dont".. but I do know people who have died from collateral damage. I gave the two examples above about my friends mom who died of nursing home neglect and my tenant who relapsed and drank himself to death in isolation. But I forgot to tell you perhaps the most eye opening case of all.. the other day I was getting a ride home in the courtesy shuttle from my car dealership and I started talking to the driver about the "pandemic" and I asked him the same question..
He said yes.. his wife, after working 30 years as an RN in an Orthopeadic Surgery facility was laid off from her job. About a month later she fell in to a deep depression, became addicted to opiates and overdosed.
Think about that for minute..
Anecdotal and a lie. A two-for.

wow... I noticed that Corona Virus was a real headline in the news in California.. so I decided to run the excess death death data on 2018 compared to 2020 for just the state of California:
{ season2017_2018: 60285, season2019_2020: 56423 }

HOLY F... 4000 LESS people have died in the last 10 weeks in California than died during the first 10 weeks of the flu season of 2018. This shit is being manufactured on Social Media.

LA county alone has easily over double the population of both Houston and Dallas combined.
This is nonsense.

My good friend at the gym is a barber and we were joking about going to Boston and setting up a mini shop outside in some park lot. Technically that follows the New York State guidelines as they are in yellow zone, but 2 minutes away in Hamburg and you get your license taken away...
If you're going to do a shutdown, at least do it by county...
You meant “country” right?

Exactly. Who are all these randoms? We have a nice close group of reasonable people in Upstate, its rare across these forums. Lets keep it that way.
Back to Covid. 173k cases today.

Ours went back 4 days a week beginning of this month . Home on Wednesday for. sanitizing. The town went red alert last week. The more kids that get it, the better . Get it out of the way . If they stay full remote this ridiculousness will never end.

So, I’m logged out, tried resetting password. Email never came. Tried new account with a different email. Confirmation email never came. Super frustrating.

Maybe it is auto-correlation or a fluke or something, but we haven't had a warm-neutral winter with low solar since the 1950s, I think it would have happened more recently if it wasn't slightly disfavored by solar tilting the ENSO scale a bit.
I do think the PDO will be much less positive than 2014-15, when you had the insane +2 reading for Nov-Apr by JISAO. An El Nino with an opposite sign PDO or even a flat PDO would be a pretty different winter for the US v. 2014-15 and 2015-16. Not a blow torch everywhere, and not cold in the East/warm in the West.
The Mar-Aug PDO base state plus October Nino 1.2 readings re-created from analogs are a good PDO estimate for Nov-Apr, and we know Mar/Apr 2018 is neutral for the PDO.
It's been a long time since the AMO was negative with an El Nino and a warm Pacific, that's a semi-ideal pattern for cold and moisture in the SW, so I do hope we hit the jackpot with all three phases aligned. The AMO looks legitimately negative this May.
Nobody wishes for a negative AMO more than I.

La Niña. Book it. It’s a tendency right now. I always go with persistence. The southern drought tells me so.

Fun pictures. Snow in Texas in March have been quite the shock for some people. We had 9.6" Feb 26-28 that winter, biggest non-Dec snowstorm in Albuquerque in 30 years.
One of the features of the 2014-15 Winter / Spring was the Atlantic actually got to the cold side of "average" in Feb-Apr. AMO ended up at 0.005 or something for Nov-Apr in 2014-15.
It's interesting to see it radically cooling off again in the East again.
Yep. 2015 was a Hail Mary. Hoping the amo switch will give us more like it.

I still have some things to figure out. Luckily, the views weren't that interesting, weather-wise. It was mostly light rain the whole way with a few heavy downpours here and there.
You know that's a hell of a good idea. Had a storm come through last year with very fast moving shelf and roll clouds and impressive lightning. A go pro running as I drove towards it would have been great.

What are you getting a masters in? I've been kicking around the thought of going back to finish my PhD.
My masters in Statistics. I love it. I'm a masochist I guess. I have one in Biology and BSs in both bio and chem. what PhD are you seeking? You're a braver man than me. I turned down med school 18 years ago.

incidentally, you in the STAT department at TAMU? I'm working my masters.

Well, climo is working against us. The cfs and cansips are ghastly. I got nothin. We sit at 11 freezes at DFW. We technically have about 6 weeks to get three freezes but i see nothing hopeful. 14 is the fewest. be afraid. Be very afraid.

I'm still holding out hope for the last week of Feb into 1st of March. Was it two years ago that our whole winter was basically two weeks at the end of Feb? One small system then a nice winter storm. I'll have to go back and look.
Yep! Actually a small system and then two storms where we got 6" in each of em. You were so upbeat and I had already buried the winter.
