I don’t think I’ve ever seen it sleet as hard as it is in Rockville right now
2017, there was a sleet. It's why I was so hyped over this storm. This is just like it, and it was one of my first major winter events I had ever experienced.
9:00 a.m. update: For all those wondering, Reagan National Airport says it has received two inches of snow so far. That’s right in the middle of reports from around the immediate metro which range from one to three inches of snow and sleet. Dulles had picked up 2.6 inches as of early this morning. The White House, as of 7 a.m. had record 2.5 inches (and an impressive 2.34 inches of liquid equivalent).

do you like sleet?
Only a little

The best thing about sleet? It's not going to get toasted off by the sun even though it's 26 degrees outside.

I have never seen a sleet storm like this before. Everything is covered in white ice. Legit all sleet. Like 2.5 inches so far and just pouring sleet. Unreal
Wait til you see what happens when they plow it and cars try to back over it, thinking it'll compact down like snow.

so much sleet. . .so much treated roads have caved
My parking lot, which was treated, is literally just a bowl of sleet right now. It's fantastic. The sleet is almost as high as the curb now.

Got about an inch of sleet on the ground and still assaulting at the moment. It's brutal outside.
Can't even be mad about missing out on the snow, this is a unique event and it's better than freezing rain.YES! I'm making sleet converts.
It's my favorite kind of event when it's not an epic snowstorm.
-
Alrght we've got at least an inch or more of sleet on the ground now in Germantown and plenty more to come. This is shaping up to be a heck of a fun event. You're not driving in this. Everything is caved and there are no cars on the road.
-
Ok the band started with a thump of heavy snow and now it's the heaviest sleet I've seen int his entire event. It looks like a thunderstorm outside.
-
Y'all. This band right now setting up from Germantown to NW of Baltimore is sick. Get ready for it.
-
FAT rippage snowflakes in Germantown right now!!!! came out of nowhere. Was a heavy sleet storm and then now its ripping snow. You folks to the NE of me, get ready.

Way to pick out the worst run of the NAM at its longest range lol. What was king euro showing at that range, 10" of snow for MoCo?
The NAM had this down even 2 days ago. As of last night the Euro was still giving the region widespread 5" of snow.
Put another way... I've been hugging the NAM this entire event and I'm not bummed out at all. This has actually been a fun one to track and I'm getting in my yard exactly what I expected.

Biggest all sleet event for me since March 2007.
I moved here in 2017 and this is like it was in that 3" sleet storm for my back yard in Gaithersburg in 2017. Looking at radar, I think we all have a good shot at 2-3" of sleet for this storm too.
-
The amount of sleet accumulating is fantastic. It’s not collecting on the railings, it’s all bouncing onto the ground. This stuff is dense and heavy and not melting at all.

Flipped back to heavy sleet in Germantown.
As long as QPF stays high then we are going to get obscene sleet accums today.
-
There’s definitely sleet mixed into this snow. It’s like a sleet shower combined with a ton of flakes.
-
Oh. Woah. Heavy snow in Germantown!?!!

Incidentally, the roads are passable in Charlottesville but not plowable because it's almost all sleet and it's 27F out there. Just an hour drive away from all those deathbands up there it feels like one of those weird winter storms that hits northern Mississippi or Alabama. Never seen it before.
This is what I love about these kinds of storms and why I’m still cheering for 3” of sleet. It’s so hard to plow and the idiots who think they can drive in it usually don’t get out of the parking lot.
-
Heavy sleet has returned in Germantown. I’m getting significant accumulations of it, the ground is already white and covered. Although it’s more like styrofoam balls than usual sleet right now. Graupel.
-
Big slug of moisture coming in from the west. If I can get 1-2" of sleet from it, then I'll probably end up with 2.5-3" of total sleet + freezing rain and it's going to be hilarious watching the cars in my parking lot try to get out or try to shovel it.

The NAM won this 24 hours ago. I called it yesterday morning. When the NAM says no. It's no.

Yup, I learned my lesson this season. If there's confusion as to where the sleet line is going to be, always rely on the NAM. Even yesterday while models were giving everyone 5" of snow, the NAM was insistent on saying it would be all sleet.

No, but the much-ridiculed NAM once again lead the way on this. What a winter it has had. You can take the GFS, HRRR, and Euro and throw them in the trash can.
I'm sitting at 25 with a mix of sleet and freezing rain. Seems to go to all sleet in heavier bands. This is probably the most frustrating winter I can remember. At least some previous winters, you just closed the blinds and took the loss and took your lumps because you were coming off a run of really good winters. The amount of time I've spent tracking essentially nothing this winter makes me understand why Bob Chill stepped away.
This was so much more bearable just hugging the NAM from the start. There’s still a good storm to be salvaged here, just relies on getting enough sleet to look like snow

Back edge appears to be here in Germatnown too. STill getting sleet to fall but it's bright outside. At least I don't have to worry about this stuff cooking off.
