2018, but most of those storms underperformed in my area. Just not a snow magnet here in N Middlesex County. 2016 and Dec 2010 were jackpots, oh and Jan 2011. The rest are all just also rans....( not counting prior decades ).

You may have had big storm in Dec 2020; we had a few inches. But that would be fine right about now....

SAD is a legitimate and serious disorder; in fact. when summers are cloudy and rainy, as I think 89 was, people can get a summer version of it. Far more people get depressed over cold and snow than are happy about it.

But patterns often suck for us. Global warming OTOH, is an existential threat. I can live without snow, but problem as I see it is that it is abnormal not to see some level of snow in winter, and that is concerning. A couple if 3-6 inchers if nothing else, but sometimes we don't even see that. Had a run of such years in the past, for different reasons.

We have? I can think of 2, 2013 and 2018. Ok, now that I think of it, 2015, but that had some real cold to work with it and none of the snows were memorable, except the very last one around here, which was 8-10 inches ( the upper limits for march storms in my area ). Generally if it doesn't do much in Dec that means it's not lookin good around the New Brunswick area. Your area might be different. And some of those good backend years like 2018 basically missed my area.

A winter that changed the world, and one I'd like to forget. I do like to see a snow storm or two, but this winter has dud written all over it. Glad I sold off a snowblower before it became obvious it won't be needed. In our area, this kind of pattern can leave us with nothing but a few flurries or dustings. Maybe some sleet. For the entire winter. Keeps the snow haters, of which there are many, happy at least.

There are plenty of journal articles on these topics. This forum is about the upcoming weather. If you really want to know the answers you can find plenty of good information from legitimate sources online or in your local library. You don't even have to search for them, the librarian will do it for you.

Do you think the drier conditions this year will continue and limit impacts? Haven't had heavy precip in a long time. Sure was a challenge with the garden this season. Retired now so don't pay as much attention as I used to....

Yeah but in general the rest of May has been lousy, and I've had to restart seedlings several years now because once anything in the nightshade family gets exposed to a cold shot, they don't really recover. We used to say plant after Mother's Day, last year I was starting new seedlings in June, because the Fall is warmer than in the past and adult plants can take a little cool weather. So I've been planting a little later. That said, we need some rain. Raised beds are dry, in ground garden spot is as dry as clay. We call NJ the garden state, but really aside from a few Cole family and lettuce crops, most of what we grow needs hot weather.

Some speculation that the losses of white cedar in S Jersey are due to over saturation from precip heavy storms. Some speculation as well that local fisheries like the winter flounder have been affected somewhat by warmer waters ( though overfishing played a role as well; for reasons that are unclear some environmental groups are reluctant to point fingers at commercial fisheries, which are a big contributor to plastic waste in the oceans, as much as 50% )and there are regular reports of southern fish species showing up in our local waters, like the poisonous southern puffer, cobia, and Spanish mackerel.

Light cold rain here. Was heavier earlier but no snow at all; no one was expecting anything more than a few white rain showers here. But still nasty out and will mean a good day to stay indoors; just ask my dog....waiting for a contractor as the wind the other night blew my big blue spruce down. Planted it in 95 when it was but a shrub, it must have been some 25-30 foot tall. Heartbreaking. My dead oak is still standing; minus some heavy branches. Gotta get that one taken down as well. Gonna cost me. Ugh.

I pretty much ignore predictions like this. He doesn't know what will happen anymore than anyone else, and I don't think analogs are particularly useful in the current climate. Just my unprofessional opinion. I wouldn't bet against snow, but I think we are pretty much done for this year; winters like this usually don't result in a snowy March.

The story for us in that storm was the sleet and rain on top of the 10 inches of snow, which then froze solid. It wasn't a historic snow at all for us, but that amount of thick ice is something I've not seen before or since, and it could not be easily cleaned, resulting in multiple school closures for days.

2/13 Light/Moderate Snowfall Nowcasting & Observations

Really don't want my kid driving his dodge avenger into the Bronx tomorrow morning.....hoping the class will be canceled but no one is paying attention to this event it seems. We went from an inch over by 10 am to several inches and possibly later in the day. I mean c'mon....it's not a big storm but enough to cause issues. -

Do these maps ever really pan out? And won't they be different later on tonight? -

We had the -EPO and we don't have that now. I don't think this will amount to much. But who knows. Note; I don't actually know what the EPO is but I've read enough about it here to know it's what caused the snowy winters of those years despite lack of -NAO ( IIRC....) -

I've no confidence in this event, but in a way since my son has to drive to the Bronx Zoo tomorrow for a class I kinda hope it peters out. Which means we probably get 4 inches no one prepared for in the roads dept.... -
it was remarkably close and had my area right on the 6-8 line most of the time, we wound up with a narrow swath of 7-8, just across the Kill in SI they had 9. We almost never overperform here. With snow disappearing so fast these days, I wonder why bother to clean it that well? And I didn't. I do the driveway and walks to make em usable, but don't fuss over it. Most times, it's all gone in a week.

I lose power in most major events, and I live near SI on the NJ side....I haven't lost power in ice, but in all of the big hurricanes/tropical storms and in the October 2011 snowstorm. This has to do with downed trees mostly. So the ice has to be pretty bad to bring down trees, and I don't think that's happened in awhile. Curiously, the block in back of me usually doesn't lose power. Haven't lost power in winter, though that Oct storm was winter temps, but not enough to freeze pipes. It's such a threat I have installed water pressure backup pumps for sump pumps, since we typically do not lose water ( though one town did from some reason during Sandy, according to the contractor who installed it ).
