It's true though. Even with 2-4" events there's just not a lot of excitement. You should try living in the south and going years without seeing snow. The sight of a snow flurry is enough to close schools down there. Up here it's like business as usual.

  2. One thing I love about the south is that EVERY snow event is a big deal. It's snowing lightly here right now and could see some light accumulations and nobody is even talking about it. That's what I don't like about the midwest. In the south, snow is more fun. You go so long without seeing snow, that you appreciate even the slightest bit of snow. I think people up here take the smaller events for granted and don't appreciate it enough.

This year it felt like both spring and fall were skipped here and the seasons seemed to transition directly from winter to summer to winter. I did a calculation for Peoria, IL to see how the daily temps this year compared to normal. My criteria for spring/fall like weather was highs in the 60s and 70s. The "average" number of days with highs 60F to 79.9F is 109 per year. That is, the daily average high temp is in that range from April 8 to June 6 and from September 9 to October 27. This year there were only 65 days in that range, or 59.6% of normal. I can't say I am a fan of skipping the transition seasons.

You are not even exaggerating. There was literally no spring or fall ( which happen to be my 2 favorite seasons).

We average slightly more snowfall than philly and their nw burbs.  When I lived there in the early/mid 70's it was a joke for winter weather.   I moved to Ohio right after that in the late 70's and thought I had moved to Alaska.    It's all perspective and sometimes you can luck out with a great stretch of winters over many years, (see Detroit), or a bad stretch too, (see Indy).   Those areas will reverse as climo eventually always wins out.

It does seem the midatlantic has had a stretch of winters lately that feature at least one good storm ....but they have also gone many years in a row with nada.   You look at the snowfall totals for midatlantic cities and it's deceiving.   It's like they'll go 7 years with 12" and then get 2 years in a row with a 30" noreaster.   Quite honestly, as I get older I'd probably prefer that winter climo over endless subfreezing days and nickle and dime snowfalls, ie Central Ohio.

But in the end snow melts....  congestion, rude people, and high taxes don't.

Last winter was just awful here. Tons of cold days but I think the biggest snow we had was 4". Ended up with about 2 feet total but mostly just 1-2" snows.

Suppressed or missed to the north. I swear Central Indiana is a winter storm repellent. Sick of it really. I know its early December but come on been the theme like 3 years in a row.

Yeah what's the point of it being cold all the time if it's never going to snow ? Might as well be 70 and sunny.

  6. It would be something if the south once again got a big early December snow. Last year in early December, parts of GA got a foot ! Does this part of the country ever get a decent snow ? I am still waiting. Might have to move south to see a good snow again. Good grief the weather here is so boring. Cloudy and cold day after day but not much to show for it !

Beavis... not trying to be snarky, but you really should consider moving north when you can.

Personally I feel fortunate to live in an area that gets to experience such variety, even though it's not really favorable for the most extreme weather (i.e. no -50 in winter or 110+ in summer, except maybe during the Dust Bowl lol).

Does anyone really want -50 or 110 degree weather?

Snowless in Carrollton *IS* from Georgia (Carrollton is about a 20 minute drive from here). For a person that's used to the Sun Belt, it is unusual.

Yeah i have lived in GA my whole life until 10 months ago. And i wont be in this area too much longer. The endless cloudy days is incredibly depressing. And im not even close to the Great Lakes. I am a good 200 miles SE of Lake Michigan so im not sure where these clouds are coming from.

Certainly one of those weeks this week. As been the case for much of the week, another day of wall-to-wall overcast skies and highs in the 30s the entire day. It should have had rained or snowed with it. Not much luck with Fridays lately, too. So far this November, as of yesterday, sunshine is currently at around 25%, but expect it to drop to near 20% over the next few days. Here's to a long crappy weekend. :axe:

Yeah I am so over this constant overcast. And not a snowflake to show for it here. I feel like I am in Seattle. Where is the sunshine ? Today was supposed to be Partly Sunny and ended up being cloudy. Tomorrow was forecast to be Mostly Cloudy and now they changed it to Cloudy. They are forecasting "Partly Sunny" on Mon and Tues but I have a feeling as it gets closer it will change to Mostly Cloudy or Cloudy.

Just wanted to thank you all of the great posts.  Wednesday, had a bout w a kidney stone.  Wowza, did that thing hurt!!!  I was literally rolling around in the ER in terrible pain.  So embarrassing in retrospect!  LOL. It "appears" it has passed.  Had a good report from the urologist today.  Anyway, just being able to read/respond to posts made the time go by a bit more quickly.  So, many thanks to EVERYONE on the forum.  Have a great weekend and GBO!!!

My mom had kidney stones a couple weeks ago and said the pain was worse than labor ! Needless to say I am now terrified of getting a kidney stone. Anyway, glad you are feeling better.

  11. Well, hopefully we will get lucky and see a foot snowstorm this winter. The most snow I've experienced in a single snowstorm was 10" in the 1993 Blizzard. I did get to experience my coldest temp ever last year when I was here as it got down to -12 ! I just hope this winter isn't dry like El Nino winters tend to be in the midwest.

Not sure about that.  A 6" storm is like a once every other year thing in that area (on average) so I wouldn't be surprised if a 4" snow only occurs once or maybe twice a year.

Lots and lots of 1-2" snows last winter.

Yeah getting 12”+ is a big deal especially in central Illinois, Indiana, Ohio. Our last 12” snowfall occurred 3/25/13 although the PVB came darn close. Other than that 2/13/07 was about as textbook as you’re going to get around these parts.

    Welcome to the Midwest btw.

It really surprises me that big snowstorms are not more common along the I-70 corridor. You have the Gulf to the south that brings in copious amounts of moisture and usually temps are pretty cold here in winter. You would think moisture and cold air would combine more often.

I thought snowless in Carrollton was in the Midwest last Winter? Anyway, Midwest and East Coast climatology are completely different. Regardless of your latitude in the midwest (it gets greater the further north you go), rule of thumb is more Winter in the Midwest, bigger storms in the East. Cincinnati and Indianapolis are capable of getting huge snowstorms, but they do not happen often. Although actually, Baltimore and DC have terrible Winter climo when you think about it. They can get monster storms, but without them, there is hardly any Winter there.

I said this is my first year in the midwest. I've been here since January. I found last winter pretty boring for the most part. The biggest snow we had here was 4". Back in GA where i'm from, they had a snowstorm close to a foot last winter.
