Tonight’s high tide ended up being the highest of all in my neighborhood. The entire end of my block had at least some inundation. Right up there with the highest tides since sandy and close to the perfect storm. Amazing that we reached these level without ever having high winds. Goes to show what days of large East swells can do by blocking water from leaving the bays. Also noticed some major erosion. A high impact event for the coast.

Finally got a chance to get to Tobay this morning. Beach is beat up. Ocean took several feet of the new dune they put up after Sandy. Water was crashing under the beach house well after high tide. Waves were really clean though.

Amazingly Humberto caused more beach erosion and washovers then Dorian. This is due to swell periods being significantly higher (16 vs 12 seconds) which contain much more energy. Yesterday at Jones Beach I surfed some of the biggest waves since Bill. Easily some 12 foot sets. Today was smaller in the 8 foot range on the bigger sets. Most interesting to me was the refraction occurring off the Hudson Canyon yesterday which led to waves moving in from the west!!!!!

    And, please please rain!

Refraction off the Hudson canyon. You gotta explain.

I first noticed it way back in July 2003. We had a solid week of powerful surging waves that seemingly came out of nowhere. Minor beach wash overs and swell periods of 20-17 seconds, something completely unheard of on the east coast. I looked around the North Atlantic and there was no tropical activity or storms at all. I figured it had to have come from a huge storm the week before that was unusually far north in the Southern Hemisphere. So I sent a question to Sean Collins the founder of Surfline and the king of surf forecasting. He sent me back a response on their “who knows” detailing the storm that caused the swell and how it’s entirely possible given the right circumstances. They have been talking about this current swell on their premium subscription forecasts for over a week now!!!

We have had several smaller events since 03 but this is the only other that stacks up.

Check out the swell periods on the NY Harbor Buoy. There are our typical local wind waves with the periods below 10 seconds and then the southern hemi swells with the periods over 13 seconds.

Pretty cool. Up to 16 seconds at times. I look at the buoys often but would have just glossed right over that this week.

South facing shores will have the biggest swells and impacts, but they will be noticeable along the whole east coast. The swell started arriving Saturday and should last through the week with lowering swell periods and thus impacts. It’s those longest period swells that have the most energy. It’s pretty amazing stuff and very rare.

So now you’ve got me curious. Long period swells from the Southern Hemisphere? Where did you read that, I’ve never heard that before.

This was more in comparison to during the week when winds were light onshore and water temps were In the mid 70s. They were mid 60s yesterday at Jones Beach. I doubt there was much variability between jones and cedar. You must just like chilly water!

The water was a bit cool right on shore (Tobay). It certainly didn't feel like 75, which is what both Buoys were reading.

This boat washed up at field 6 Jones Beach a few days ago. I went there last night to photograph it. I was surprised how dark it was that close to the light pollution. 55f4761c7460e164f16c638f4ff2f5f0.jpg

I saw this boat last weekend. The owner of this thing should have to bear the full cost of the removal. The "up to" $15k probably won't cover the cost to the state to have this removed. This was intentional and sets a bad precedent for people that don't know what do with their useless old boats. You can't just leave this thing at the curb and hope the garbage men will take it away.

    Great picture though lol

I’ll start keeping an eye out for them nightly now. My 3 year son and I looked last night but didn’t see any yet in Syosset, so I told him I’d ask on here. Hopefully they appear this week in my own backyard.

I actually meant to post this but I saw the first one over a week ago. Surprised because it was so cool and rainy.  Now I have multiple a night in my yard. I guess I am in a good spot for them.
