It's very frustrating. I get that some jobs are such that you are more productive in an office setting, but most office jobs are not that way. For me, personally, I am for more productive at home than I was in the office. I don't have people constantly stopping by to talk about nothing, we don't schedule meetings unless they are actually needed, and I'm just far happier overall which makes me more productive.

Yep it is. The work from home was working for so many and then they got blindsided. He is an animator and his set up at home had worked for over 3 years. We have topped out our internet and he is hard wired in. He had to return back his equipment with this change, and we went out and got a new monitor for his laptop to run through. And a convertor hub to run everything through his laptop. He too said he is more productive at home and had more time to work not due to having to commute 270. They lost a lot of people due to early retirement or just finding work from home companies. He is begrudgingly doing it for now.

Yeah, we are still full remote, which is amazing, but I have a feeling they are going to try to force us back a couple days a week soon for whatever nonsensical reasons they have. But yeah, the tradeoff of having to work snow days has been totally worth it given the flexibility. And we have hardly had any snow days the past however many years anyway.

This just happened at my husband's office. After this time last year saying you can choose your path of working. Told them that "we work better when we are together" without giving any stats, which ticked my husband off. He mainly works with people in the Austin, TX and Montreal office so literally goes in now to sit behind his computer and have meetings that he could be doing at home. He is required now to be in 3 days a week and two of them are Tuesday's and Wednesday's as those are "meeting" days. He is not going in today he decided. Said if they have a beef he can tell them he will just take a PTO day and not work at all. He is logged in now a half hour earlier than if he would have went in. Also he has a MX5 so that was not getting put on the roads today.

Believe @Mrs.J said Frederick was already closed today.

Yep. We had a scheduled teacher work day for end of term2/1st semester for final grades. Teachers just got notice they can do grading from home if they cannot get in. We have tomorrow off as well for a Professional day for teachers.

My kid at AU also sent a message that campus is closed. And that professors will be in contact about online class if they choose. That will help as quite a lot of students who were to fly to get back to campus for the start of the Spring Semester today had canceled flights and won’t be able to get to campus by today.

Starting to get some yellows rolling through. It’s very Jan ‘00 outside…very much an Atlantic/misty type of snowfall.

  5. 25 here. Very tiny flakes but enough to make roads dicey. Just got back from taking the kid to work on the NE side of Frederick. Took surface roads there but decided on 15 to get home. For now 15 is the best surface to drive on. The surface roads on the SW side of town where I live are down to one lane travel. Kids shift is done at 3 so will see what it ls like then.

Barely any wind up here so far, but easily the best overall rain I’ve seen in a year. We’ve had a few decent events the last few months, but it seems like Frederick has consistently been on the lower end of areawide totals. This one is a true drought denter.

Was just going to say that myself. Had to go out to the local Giant for a new lighter. With the wind advisory out remembered ours ran out a day ago and if we need candles lit that would have been an issue. Yes on the rain though. I have my station set to alert me when it hits an inch. Looking back at the data there have been 10 events, that includes today of over an inch recorded. Rainfall so far today is at 1.10".

Definitely getting "stormier" now. Took a (wet) walk outside down to where the TV tower along Wisconsin Ave. is, and I can hear the dull roar of the wind as it passes through the top (around 700 feet up). But not really that windy at the surface (yet?). Always a good way to guesstimate what kind of wind energy is above ground level, I suppose.

Will have to follow you for when my oldest heads back to school this semester.

Weather wise up here winds are defiantly blowing more from the NE as the front of our house faces E and the rain is hitting them pretty good. Up to .81" so far. And Mr. J headed my advice and came home just after lunch time so he would not get caught on 270 in the crappy weather.

I could be wrong, but I am almost positive that was one time when it was clearly obvious everyone should close early and Frederick did not and that's why that happened.

I'd also add that one semi-bad thing that happened when it rained one time is not really a reason to freak out about rain. Make informed decisions? Sure.

No you are not wrong. The old Superintendent messed that one up for sure. As for the second part I had the ability to pick my kids up. Many families did not, and some kids sat at their schools till 6pm.

As for conditions up here now. Wind has picked up and light on the rain here so far with .71".

Was that the October 30/31st storm?

I don't remember the exact dates but around Sept./Oct. of that year. I remember sitting in the HS parking lot at dismissal and while watching RadarScope saw a suspicious rotation pass over the football field. The parking lots full, cars were all over the main road in front of the school double parked. Probably the worst dismissal pick up ever with my kids in school. I live only 1/4 mile from the school, and it took us 20 min to get home.

The criteria for closing schools has changed drastically over the decades. My mom told me in the 1960's school would be open with a foot of fresh snow on the ground. When I was in school in the 1990's, it took about 6 inches to close school. Today a squirrel farts wrong and schools close.

As to the reason why, my guess is heightened liability issues. Its just easier to make it up at the end of the year than opening yourself up to lawsuits.

Yeah... these school closings are getting ridiculous. As for BCPS... there is nothing new in the forecast... so why not just say you are closing 3 hours early the night before.  You are making it a headache for family's where both parents work.  The only reason why they did close schools, is because a 3 hour earlier dismissal  still counts as a full day. Parents depend on school officials too much.  You are the parent and you have the final say.  If you feel like it is too dangerous, then keep you kids home.  If you feel like it is too dangerous to walk or ride the bus... drive them yourself.  Parents all too often want someone else to make their decisions for their kids so they have someone to blame.  End rant

Closing early for this, except for perhaps the counties along the bay, is so dumb, but IF you are going to close, I totally agree that you have to do it the night before. Nothing changed between last night and this morning. I work from home so I am fortunate that it doesn't really impact me and I can easily get my kids from the bus, but many parents are not that fortunate and this is a huge headache for them. At least let them be able to plan ahead for said huge headache.

I really wish I knew the clowns in charge of these decisions.

Parents in Frederick Co. remember this image from Fall 2021. We are more than fine with a 3 hr. early dismissal up here.

  11. FCPS MD just announced a 3 hr early dismissal. Just picked my youngest up, she only has one block at the HS this semester as she had dual enrollment. I am glad they did this though. The last time we had a system come through back in 2021 there were Elementary kids who took busses stranded at their schools due to flooding on the routes. Also don't think I would want my kid on a high profile cheese wagon in the projected winds.

It’s pretty wintry out there right now. Snow is sticking to everything here. Millvillewx mentioned the valley here can do a good job holding the cold in and that’s exactly what’s happening so far.

Yep traps all the cold in the winter and all the smog in the summer. :D
