End of the week heat is just in time for the end of softball season and a one-day tournament on Saturday. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

Oooh that's gonna be a hot one!  Not as bad as Friday but still...

    Looking nicer by Sunday maybe

  2. I see we are back to normal with all the rain just to my S and E -- barely a trace here.  That's why I got up and enjoyed last Friday's 3 am fluke thunderstorm -- I know that was likely the one storm of the summer for me

  3. Wow is it a  nice morning!  If I wasn't lazy this would be an ideal time for a long walk.  But sipping coffee on the deck is fine too ^_^

OK heat misers here we go!  Glad to see WxUSAF explain that the big heat should be short lived though

.79” with some thunder and lightning overnight.

not even close to putting a dent in the drought out here.

Yeah it's gonna take some work to chip away at those deficits.  This is county averages, so specific spots might be way worse.  I know my spot is way worse off than say Rockville, etc

  5. A stunning 1.5 which is the most rain in one storm I can remember in a long time, and is more than all of June combined.  Up to 3.4 for July so far.

Side note - what did they do with the iweather rainfall map?  It used to be so accurate against CoCoRaHS and even my gauge.  Now, not only can you not zoom in, it is way off the mark.

  6. Woke up to hard rain and T&L.  First time here in ages!  Just now had a strike within 100 feet.  Looking at radar I could pass the mythical 1 inch mark which would be the first time since I don't know when

  7. 30-day rainfall map really shows the rain hole in our severe drought region.  So another overnight disturbance coming?  OK southern MD to eastern shore folks enjoy your 2-4 inches.  We'll be watering tomorrow morning

  8. Just looked at some dreary web cams from OC MD.  I would have gladly taken their rainy day for them, but we don't do rainy days here in summer, ever.  We do soaking rain and 33 in winter just great, but summer here is so arid.

Another 1.10" of rain last 90 minutes out here in the Valley between Staunton and Waynesboro. Now 1.54" for the day and 2.42" last 2 days.  39 mph southeast wind at 3:42.

71 degrees and light rain at 4:45.

    Board name checks out

Spent a good chunk of time out on the deck as it's fairly nice out.  Hoping for rain later tonight

76 degrees at 2:30 after .44" in the last hour from a hard shower.

That makes 1.32" in the last 2 days.

    Are you N of Baltimore?

    I've got a toasty 89/73 right now

The HRRR is quite stormy for the overnight period. The overnight nature probably means limited severe threat, however. These nocturnal storms tend to be prolific lightning producers when the atmosphere is humid, though.

Night thunderstorms with lots of lightning are my favorite.  We used to go to near Atlantic Beach, southern outer banks and that place was ideal for night storms.  One time we had one that went on for an hour and there was so much lightning it was like a strobe light.

    Oh, Kettering…

I was passing by there last June and went in look around and saw my old house at the intersection of Kettering and Bennington Drives.  There used to be a big open field right next to us in the 70s that we had fun times in.  Now it's all houses.  I noticed a lot of retiree-aged people around and the yards looked really nice.  Older folks love the gardening!

  13. Best big event:  Blizzard of '79 in hardest hit Calvert County.  Was like a hurricane of snow where at times we could not see the woods less than 100 feet from the house.  Total was 30-36 with 6-plus foot drifts.

Best smaller event:  Jan. 1978 in Kettering, MD with forecast of rain developing in the evening and continuing overnight, possibly beginning as a brief period of snow.  Got a totally unexpected front end thump with about 6 inches in just 2-3 hours, then drizzle after.  Best positive bust ever

  14. Finally got my first thunderstorm of the summer!  Some good lightning and thunder, and 0.6 which is the most in one day in many many weeks.  It may not sound like much but for here it is a deluge.

Puts July at 1.5 which is already better than the extremely dry May and June.

In very early 2021, I found the Oakland CVS had vaccines available (only place in MD at that time) and fell in love with GC. The pace and quality of life is second to none and when I had the chance to move last year, I went from not having an idea I'd be here...to moved in, in less than a week. The area around Deep Creek is spectacularly expensive so have my eye on Alpine Lake WV across the state line which gives you a similar vibe but at a third of the cost. And of course, the night-and-day snowfall compared to my old stomping grounds in Germantown was the primary driver for the move (something that my spouse still rolls his eyes at) lol. IMBY I ended up with 43" last winter which, for here, is pathetic but as I am a frequent visitor to this Board and felt eeeeeeeveryone's pain, is a lightyear ahead of DC metro.

Congrats on the move and getting out of the disgusting desert that you left behind

  16. Just looked at Key West -- lows the last three mornings 86, 87 and 87 with HX rarely below 100 and there are some water temps as high as mid-90s!  That is sick.  Better hope a tropical cyclone does not get a taste of those water temps.

Hoping for a rare thunderstorm the next couple of days but the LWX disco doesn't make me optimistic with the typical west today and east tomorrow.

It's getting pretty bad NW of the fall line. The drought is definitely alive still.

Article below says this is the 2nd driest year ever for Mont Co, and my spot is the worst of all as places nearby have had downpours that I missed.  I do water my flower beds and pots but I'm letting the lawn go dormant.
