Holy crap. My 14 year old son has been shoveling since 9am. Just walked in the door with $315. Reminds me of me when i was 14. He has 1 more job and is going to buy a refurbed macbook. Love it. I used to buy beer and other stuff with my shoveling money.stuff I must be doing something right as a dad... lol

Congrats!  That is an industrious young man there.  Lot of kids these days are content to just sit around.

Steady light snow 2 miles NE of Germantown, with larger flakes mixing in.

  2. Just got a report from relatives in Leonardtown, St. Mary's County with 5 inches; just changed over to sleet.  What an over-performer for central VA to far southern MD!

The VDOT traffic cams for I-95 in and near Richmond are a hoot.

You could have flew back home, just flew into the AVL regional airport and got a hotel room nearby there. Widespread foot+ totals.

I can imagine how awesome that Biltmore mansion would look all decorated and with snow on the ground.  If I was not tied down, I'd have zipped down there.

    Enjoy your storm!

  4. Just to show how fluky yesterday was, here are the high temps for Nov 15 since 2013 (IAD).  Even more impressive is that yesterday's  high of 37 was just after midnight and it was 31/32 from 7 am to 1 pm.  IAD measured 1.50" of precip so just think what this storm would have been a few weeks later!

    2013:  62

    2014:  43

    2015:  66

    2016:  63

    2017:  54

    2018:  37 (3.0" snow)

It’s kind of embarrassing but I never knew that rain COULD fall on snow...

Oh man.  Once we had 6-7" of snow which turned to a long period of freezing rain putting a half inch crust on it.  Afterwards an arctic blast came in and temps crashed to the teens and you could walk on top of the snow without breaking through!  That night there was a full moon and the reflection off the solid ice was other-worldly.  Everything was silver.  We were taking chunks of the ice and letting it slide down the long hill behind the house and you could hear them continuing down through the woods.

Another time we had a full 24 hours of steady freezing rain with 25-degree temps leaving three solid inches of ice on everything.  Spend enough winters here and you will see some wild stuff.  That's why we have so many weather weenies here -- we get a lot of mild, boring winters, but sometimes winters are NUTS.

    Don't do it.

I'll share pictures in just a moment.

But there are cars that are stuck on hills. Seriously, saw a car spin out and slide down a hill into another car near Blunt Road.

Did it!  The roads were AWFUL.  I was really surprised.  Even my Outback was slipping a little.  Passed over top of I-270 and it looked baaaaad.

At the intersection of 355 and Father Hurley (Rt 27) there was an SUV with a smashed in front, and a huge plow 50 feet away on the southbound side of 355, facing north.  Those two must have met.  The SUV lost.

The shake was great though!  Switched to heavy sleet for the drive back.  That stuff actually stung against the neck and ears!  Got 3" here in Germantown.  What an event.

About to drive back from Gaithersburg to Germantown. Got pictures will report on road conditions.

Look forward to reading -- I'm thinking of heading out to hit up Chick Fil A for the just released peppermint choc chip shake.

Mod small flake snow and about 2"

Best November snow I can remember since ahem Nov. 1978 and ahem Nov. 1995.  (I wasn't here in 1989 but I hear 1990 was kinda blah).

I’m going to say this a lot this winter:

There are a lot of people who only post in winter and most of us don’t know where they’re/you’re posting from. Locations don’t show up on mobile, so it would be helpful if you say where “here” is when posting obs, even if only sporadically.

Do you see the little sig lines people put at the bottom on mobile?  If so, I'll add my location there.

  9. Quick changeover to almost all sleet in Germantown.  Radarscope precip depiction has the snow/sleet line at about DC so not quite accurate.  Still a nice function though.

Stuck at 30 degrees so it will be interesting to see how long it takes to get above freezing.  Might get a decent ice crust.

Same in Clarksburg. Still all snow in Germantown as I drive south. I will report back where it changes to sleet mixed in when I see that happen.

And for everyone else, don’t forget to submit your mPING reports  as the storm transitions through its lifecycle. Those reports will make the numerical weather forecast that much better.

I'll be watching for those updates and comparing to Radarscope.  My parents in northern Calvert are right on the border of green/blue and they do have a mix.

Sleet just mixed in just NE Germantown, 30 degrees, 1"

Everyone told me to wait til my first CAD event. Now I understand why! I was expecting rain, or light snow to rain, but I'm colder than any model was showing right now sitting at 30 degrees and the precip doesn't look like it will let up anytime soon.

CAD is a beautiful thing here.  This one is classic (that map posted above really shows it).  Snow in and around DC while its a rain/mix in the mountains of WV.
