I tried to transplant my latannas into a larger pot to keep in the garage over the winter.   Well, didn't work.  I m ust have shocked them, even thought I made sure they had enough water.  Probably distressed them.

Next summer I am going to try a few in large pots, then bring them in for the winter.  I love those plants -- flower all the way until freeze, low maintenance, butterflies and hummingbirds, and most importantly, our hordes of rabbits and deer won't touch it.

Looks like we got a nice weekend incoming!

  2. My little warm spot got to 33.  I checked my tropical milkweeds and lantanas and they live another day, which confirms it (they die instantly at 32).  It's funny how this spot is one of the last in the area to freeze, even compared to Gaithersburg.  Wow at Staunton reporting 22!

I think tonight is the night though as my point/click has low of 26.  I will go with 30.

4.29" was the final total for the event. I'm now at 70.80" for the year.

Just incredible.  Year to date showing range from 30 inches in far north MD to over 70 in southern MD.

  4. Great stories.  Can you imagine this board if that happened today with some getting 12-17" and areas not far away getting 2-4?

Looks like southern MD is gonna get some more heavy rain tonight.  Sorry about that Waterworlders!

I've been in the rain jackpot for 6 months lol.

I remember riding the bus to school that morning and it was cold and raining lightly. About half way to school I remember big snowflakes starting to mix in and come down heavier. By the time we got off the bus about 15 minutes later it was all snow and already starting to stick on grass and cars. That was probably about 8am. By 11 roads had caved and it was coming down probably 2+ inches per hour. I remember eating lunch in the cafeteria and hearing loud thunder and seeing flashes of lightning like a summer storm. I'd estimate it was snowing 3+ inches per hour at that point. That went on most of the afternoon. It finally ended around dark but by then we were stuck in school. Some kids had to stay all night. I remember measuring 16" when I got home that night. It fell in about 7 hours from i remember. We probably got a foot between 11am and 3pm along with intense lightning. It was an amazing storm. I've been a fan of  weather since I've been able to look out a window.

Wow what a story.  You were right in the jackpot!  I missed that one as I was at FSU.  My parents in Calvert told me about it.

  6. The maples behind my house are all bare now.  It's funny watching the ginko street trees in parts of the neighborhood -- they turn bright yellow for a couple days then dump all their leaves literally in hours, even if clam weather.  They did this yesterday.

Steady rain starting to move in now and 66 degrees, which was basically the low temp.  I still have potted plants on the deck full of flowers.  Hard to believe we had a massive snowstorm 33 years ago today!

Remember this is the only the first month of our new season: NOVEMBER. We are in November/November. The season of NOVEMBER runs through November/April. We have six months of NOVEMBER ahead of us.

Yeah I call it "the dark" when the trees are bare, no gardening, and it's usually dreary, and snow is very rare most years anyway.  I'm going to have to fix that when I retire in 5 years because 5-6 months of dark is way too much.

    But man is today beautiful!

This latest intense squall is so strong it's showing up on satellite, and we definitely just had some new peak gusts of 50-60 mph. 5 avocados came down all at once, now up to 12 avocados from this hurricane.

Confirmed: An accurate weather station near me on the coast recorded 60 MPH https://mesowest.utah.edu/cgi-bin/droman/meso_base_dyn.cgi?stn=AU497&unit=0&timetype=LOCAL

Thanks for these updates.  You're gonna be making a lot of guacamole ha.

We've got relatives on the other side in Marco.

Mine are doing really well too.  THis is the first year I planted them and was extremenly happy with hoe they took.  Are they perennial, or will they be gone once they die?

I've lucked out with a few Gerber Daisies which have been reappearing for the past 3 years. ;-)

Lantanas are annuals here and have to be replanted each year.  As soon as we have the first freeze, they are gone.

Looking downright wintry feeling tomorrow with strong winds and low 40s, but that is a big ridge for later into the week and next weekend.  Get those grills ready!

  10. Heavy rain east of I-95 and just light stuff up here.  Shocking!

My mother and niece just voted in person down in Calvert which took an hour and 45 minutes.  They said the heavy rain started just as they finished and they feel bad for all those people in line.

I somehow escaped the growing season ending for NW Montgomery and my tropical milkweeds and lantana are fine.  I should be able to keep them for a while longer now.  Gaithersburg airport reached 30 and that would have killed them instantly.  This is one of the lantanas taken yesterday.

  11. From LWX: "While it appears that the best frontogenetical forcing (along the 850mb boundary) may set up to our north and the best instability and
tropical moisture (from the remnants of Zeta) may set up to our south..."

Yep, I am expecting 0.2 or less here in the central MD desert.

  12. I wish we could get the Chiefs at Denver game at 4!  Look at this forecast -- yeah Denver gets snow in October but these temps are extraordinary:

This afternoon:  Snow. High near 19.  New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.  (It's 13 degrees right now)

Tonight:  Snow, heavy at times. Low around 5. New snow accumulation of 4 to 6 inches possible.

Monday:  Snow likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 17.

Monday night:  Partly cloudy, with a low around 2.

“High impact weather event” wording no longer in the AFD for long range.  It was fun for a while to imagine what that might be.

I was wondering what that might have been too -- maybe a severe outbreak, or a heavy rain event with wind?

Looking ahead we go significantly above normal later this week. Anyone with flowers that did not have meaningful frost damage  look to hang around deep into the month.  Huge storm off the coast late week.  but a phasing opportunity is lessening.

I covered by cherished lantanas to hold on to them for a while longer.  We got to 37 and had light frost, mostly on roofs and cars.  Garden looks good for a while longer.  Could use some rain though!

Clouding up here in the jungle region of the state. Seeing heavier rain totals to my NW all week made me laugh. As expected the bullseye has settled here where it belongs. Looking forward to my 2-3+ inches. I sure hope this continues this winter. Colder flooding rain lol

LOL clouding up here in the desert too.  Looking forward to my 0.2 to 0.3

  16. Those rain totals for central MD look tasty, but I'll believe it when I see it.  It has been so dry for so long.

I was just remembering the freak 10/10/79 snow -- we got 2-3 inches in Calvert, so I wonder what central/northern MD saw?  No one could believe what they were seeing.  There was a heat wave 11 days later with mid-80s.  The all-time record for Oct. 10 is 92.

Good. It hasn't rained in days here and it's still so wet still that my lawn mower leaves ruts in my yard when I tried to cut the grass yesterday. Hopefully it ends up sunny and dry.

That's really amazing.  Here, it has been so dry that I had to mask up to cut the lawn because so much dust was being kicked up.

As for Delta's leftovers:  enjoy your rain S and E of I-95!

Now all we need is a decent 6" snow pack under full moon.  Those are the best.  Only thing that tops that is when we've had some rain on top and the snowpack is glazed over.  We can only wish...

Years ago we had a 6-8 inch snowpack with about 0.5 of ice glaze on top.  We had a clear, frigid night with a full moon and it was unreal!  It was as if the whole world was shining in silver.  We were taking one-foot square pieces of ice and listening to them slide hundreds of feet down the hill and into the woods.  It was something.

Nice day and weekend coming up.  Hard to believe that last year on this date the temp hit 98 at DCA and 96 at Dulles!
