It looks like the winter storm threat is around November 13-15th, not so much 10-12th.

maybe if you keep guessing dates you will get it right. It’s Nov 4. Winter storm threats are pretty hard to come by any location away from the ski areas this time of year

A few mangled flakes does not excite me.       Enjoy it up north though.   I would rather this event didn't happen at all.  Give me clear and dry for several weekends please

couldn't agree more. i would be ok if this was a midweek event. having it destroy almost an entire weekend makes me sad. too many leaves to clean up, which you certainly don't want to do in the rain.

Oh that's awesome. The girls are 6 and 7, it would take them a few years to get me one, lol. I've looked at some cheaper ones, the ones that use wifi, do they save the data on your computer? What is the best place to mount one? I'm on a hill in the city, but my whole backyard is surrounded by oaks, so nothing west-wind wise would probably be read anyways. Is a shed tall enough though? My oldest would probably geek out with me, she loves storms too.

i have the ambient weather ws-1002-wifi. does not save data on computer, but you can download it (which i don't do). it can post to wunderground, which is very handy. And it's right around $200, so it's not a budget breaker. I don't care too much about siting, just use it for my own entertainment.

My mature crabapple tree yellowed and dropped many leaves early too. On closer inspection it looks like it developed its first warm season of leaf spot...no surprise given the record humidity combined with lots of rain this summer. Keep the area in and around the drip line clear of old leaves and fruit so that the fungal spores don't get into the soil which would make things worse next year.

i have noticed the same thing on many trees. seemed unusual that there were apples on trees wtih no leaves

Now I regret not aerating and seeding last week. Anyway, should I cut the grass low before I aerate and lime/seed?

absolutely. 2" is optimal, but don't cut it too much shorter than you normally cut. i keep mine at 3" during the summer, went down to 2.5" for aerating/overseeding

Has anyone ever received free wood chips from that Chip Drop service?

no, but it looks interesting. i have recently had a bunch of tree work done at my house and neighbors. I have them chip up all the branches and leave a big pile. if you want clean mulch, this is not for you. i use it to fill in low spots on trails in my area. the small sticks and evergreen "shrapnel" that is in the chips breaks down very quickly. in fact, the whole thing breaks down quickly.

That will be a bummer come December. :(

this is the first time that I have ever heard of the great Lakes modifying air masses anywhere, especially in NE. I could see it on a micro level, kind of like an ocean front, but hundreds of miles away? Let me guess, more hyperbole from DIT, and he will say that he is "trying to drive discussion".

Nearly everyone I know who lives in Methuen is moving to another city/town or thinking of it. And that includes me. The city is a political circus like no other. And there is talk of a prop 21/2 override which will lead to even higher property evaluation and taxes,

yeah, but there is more snow in Methuen. it's a wash.

Speaking of AFD,  I always see so many spelling mistakes and sentences that don't make sense etc. I didn't read the one you are talking about but it happens very often and is a pet peeve of mine.  If I were sending something out to the public I would double check what I wrote.  It doesn't take too much time to go back and proofread especially in a weather pattern that is fairly benign.

while I understand your point, I don’t think anyone reads those things, aside from us weenies, and perhaps a government official here or there

Quick, spread some loam and grass seed. that will guarantee epic rains in your hood

  11. ok that doesn't sound like grub damage. you are right, the turf pretty much disintegrates since the grubs chow the roots. how frequently and how much did you water that area? have you had a lot of rain? it sucks, i remember seeing pics of your lawn looking fantastic.

  12. well, if you were watering it regularly, it wouldn't have burned out. i suppose you could have over-watered, but that sounds like a stretch. have you treated for grubs? any easy way to check for them is to stick a shovel in the ground in pull back some turf. if you see a couple, that's usually not a problem. but if you see a bunch, the damage is done.

I use a scotts speedy green 3000, it's about 15 years old.  The key to longevity for these cheap residential spreaders is to rinse the product out of the spreader when done so that it is clean, then spray all the moving part contact points with WD40 before putting it back in storage.

I did that religiously after every use, my Scott’s spreader failed after about 15 years. The loose plastic wheel eventually rubbed through the leg and it broke last week
