Winter of 2019-20 IN PICTURES - Southeast Michigan
michsnowfreak replied to michsnowfreak's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
I would be remiss if I didnt update this post lol. Im ASSUMING snow is done, first flakes on Oct 31st and last on Apr 22nd....an average snow season in the end which came about ANY way but average. Flakes should resume flying in 6 months. April 2020 - 4.7" of snow April ensured that the 2019-20 cold season ended the way it began - colder and wintrier than average. Snow fell on 8 days between the 9th and 22nd, and Detroits 4.7" after Apr 14th was the 4th highest total snow on record for so late in the season. 4-15-20 - gorgeous scenes during a 1.4" snowfall, mid-April or not 4-17-20 very heavy snow fell at the rate of 1-2"/hr for a time during the morning. The 3.3-inch fall caused very unusual scenes for so late 4-18-20 morning temps in the 20s caused the remaining snowcover to be frozen solid during the morning, gone by afternoon 4-22-20 snowflakes resting on my jacket, todays high of 38F was record cold, and snow fell off and on but didnt accumulate. And lastly...I give you Autumn and Spring in Michigan -
Rare (for April) combination of below average precip and above avg snow here in April. DTW at 1.71" precip (-0.50" to date) and 4.9" snow (+3.2")

Spring/Summer 2020 Banter/Complaint Thread
michsnowfreak replied to IWXwx's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
I agree. Honestly, I could not think of a less desirable time to be in the upper peninsula than April and May. The time between Winter and summer is just mud. Bo has excellent points of the entire state is not the same, but for down here in the populated Detroit area I absolutely agree with all of the stay at home stuff. -
Holy crap what a difference between there and here. Unlke the snowfalls last week, yesterdays snow did not accumulate here however it snowed midday and then again during the evening. None of the trees have leafed out here. ...RECORD LOW MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE SET AT DETROIT MI... THE HIGH TEMPERATURE IN DETROIT ONLY REACHED 38 DEGREES ON WEDNESDAY APRIL 22ND. THAT BROKE THE RECORD FOR LOWEST DAILY MAXIMUM TEMPERATURE. THE PREVIOUS RECORD WAS 40 DEGREES SET IN 1893.

A burst of snow moved through midday as I was taking a walk. No accumulation, but its been impressive to see how often it has been snowing the second half of April, often times during the afternoon. 2nd pic is snowflakes on my jacket today. Snowfall last 9 days...just 2 days have been snow-free Apr 14- T Apr 15- 1.3" Apr 16- T Apr 17- 3.4" Apr 18- 0, but 2" on the ground Apr 19- 0 Apr 20- 0 Apr 21- T Apr 22- T

Spring/Summer 2020 Banter/Complaint Thread

It even caught the heavy band and all. Of course, could be the broken clock syndrome. -
Snowl flurries fell all day today in the cold wind. Snow has now fallen on 5 of the last 8 days, and one of the other 3 days had snow on the ground. Pretty impressive for mid to late April.

Lol, I would pass on a London Winter. Then again, if London had the Winter we just had they would think they were descending into an ice age. Everything's relative.

Wow this was not far off -
Stats on the late snowfall at Detroit It ties for the 3rd heaviest calendar day snowfall so late in the season 1.) 6.0" - May 9, 1923 2.) 4.5" - Apr 17, 1921 3.) 3.4" - Apr 17, 2020 & Apr 17, 1983 (popular date I guess lol). In terms of snowstorms, it was 6th heaviest so late in season 1.) 6.0" - May 9, 1923 2.) 5.0" - May 21/22, 1883 (no, that's no typo) 3.) 4.5" - Apr 17, 1921 4.) 4.3" - Apr 23/24, 2005 5.) 3.5" - Apr 19/20, 1943 6.) 3.4" - Apr 17, 2020 & Apr 17, 1983 In terms of TOTAL snow April 15th to the end of the season, 2020 ranks 4th highest 1.) 8.3" - 1923 2.) 5.5" - 1943 3.) 5.0" - 1883 4.) 4.7" - 2020

I'm very curious to see what Whitmers next update for Michigan will be. With April 30 just 9 days away, usually she will announce the next step several days in advance, or at least hint at it.

A cold November and cold April bookending a mild winter actually makes the winter seem longer, because while milder than avg, DJF was obviously "cold" with "frequent" snow, relatively speaking. 6 of the last 7 mornings have had a low between 25-30F, quite unusual for April. With the two snowfalls of the past week, Detroit is at 4.9" for the month, which is the 12th snowiest April on record.

Winter 2019-20 Medium/Long Range Discussion

The most consecutive days with 1"+ snowcover was 9, set twice (Nov 11-19 & Jan 18-26). If you count days with T snowdepth, there were a total of 73 days with some snow on the ground (41 days 1"+, 32 days T). It could certainly be much better but it also could be worse. The best period of snowcover was mid-Jan to mid-Feb when only a few days had 0 depth 2020-01-18 5 2020-01-19 4 2020-01-20 4 2020-01-21 4 2020-01-22 4 2020-01-23 4 2020-01-24 3 2020-01-25 2 2020-01-26 1 2020-01-27 T 2020-01-28 T 2020-01-29 T 2020-01-30 T 2020-01-31 T 2020-02-01 T 2020-02-02 1 2020-02-03 0 2020-02-04 0 2020-02-05 0 2020-02-06 2 2020-02-07 3 2020-02-08 3 2020-02-09 2 2020-02-10 3 2020-02-11 2 2020-02-12 T 2020-02-13 1 2020-02-14 2 2020-02-15 2 2020-02-16 1 -
Winter 2019-20 Medium/Long Range Discussion
michsnowfreak replied to Hoosier's topic in Lakes/Ohio Valley
Yes, isnt that something lol. The type of Winter lover I am, this was certainly not my Winter of choice, but I also disagree when people act like the snowfall total makes the Winter look better than it was or something along those lines. It is what it is. That's why there's so many other facets to the weather than just how much snow fell. The bottom line was, this was for all intents and purposes and average snow season, technically a drop above average. The number of snowcover days of 1"+ averages 50, but this year DTW saw 41 days, so that is moreso indicative of the mild Winter. DTW snowfall this season: Oct- T (-0.1) Nov- 9.5" (+8.0) Dec- 2.7" (-7.0) Jan- 9.7" (-2.8) Feb- 14.7" (+4.5) Mar- 1.7" (-5.2) Apr- 4.9" (+3.2) May- ? -

Other interesting quirks of this season for Detroit. November 9.5" (4th snowiest) December 2.7" (21st least snowy) March 1.7" (21st least snowy) April 4.9" (12th snowiest) -
Woke up to 27F and what snow survived melting was frozen into a crust. It was a crunchy cold wintry April 18th, but dripping has already began and i THINK spring has sprung.
-
Looks like a solid 2-5" snowfall for southeast Michigan from Detroit-Ann Arbor south to the border, with little to no accumulation for the northern burbs. Storm totals include 5.0" Ann Arbor, 3.4" DTW, 3.3" Wyandotte, 3.0" Morenci. The 3.4" at DTW puts them at 43.2" on the season, so this season goes into the books 0.5" above avg. While a good deal of the snow melted yesterday, you could see the remaining snowcover on this mornings visible sattellite.
-
I mean, I like summer, but yeah, if its gonna snow I wont complain.
-
Thanks! Its my favorite from yesterday. I live just a few blocks from the tracks and took a walk, it was just awesome. Would have been awesome any time of the year, but felt unreal that it was April 17th.
-
Nice pic. Thanks, I love my train track pic, it could be a winter postcard
