I'd pump the brakes on "a few." BDL has only hit 90+ a few times post-9/11 twice in its entire history (1914, 1915). Even just getting a couple puts you at a less than 1-in-10 chance.

I think it's stressed trees. The shoreline is going to be mostly green for about the next two months unless the pattern changes dramatically in the next few weeks.

I don't think it's quite that extreme anywhere in the northeast, but it seems that AN months outnumber the BN ones by a ~3:1 ratio.

Guessing this will be another year of nearly full dull green trees come Halloween along the coast given the warmth that appears to want to linger well into September.

Maybe instead of calling it global warming just think of it more generically as bias. If someone bet you that a month was going to be above or below normal, which way would you lean without looking at anything?

Cheap home sensors are prone to contamination. They're not bad the day you take them out of the box, but over time you see it especially when it's humid or in environs which are not well mixed.

You really have to go back to 98 and earlier for when falls felt like fall. Although since there was lots of below normal months in the late-80s and 90s, perhaps that wasn't entirely representative of fall either, and I just remember that being what fall is supposed to be like because that's what I grew up with.

I think the observing network being much denser today thanks to the internet helps bump up the reported frequency of big storms because an 18 inch jack would never go unreported now. 20+ years ago you had no reliable way to know that Tolland got 19 inches while BDL and ORH reported just 5 or 6. Anecdotally I've noted that it feels like we can't radiate as well on clear nights anymore (other than that one guy in Bakersville), though I haven't done the proper research on it, but my back of the envelope math shows BDL tacking on about half a day per year to its growing season in the fall right now, and only experiences about half the number of cool fall mornings compared to 20-25 years ago. I know some will blame the fact that its an airport and we shouldn't measure in a place that's so wide open and exposed to the atmosphere (sarcasm), but it's always been an airport. Has the area around the airport really changed that much to impact nighttime temperatures this dramatically in such a short period of time? Have they added more 'macs near the thermometer? More commercial development around the airport itself? Even middle of nowhere co-ops with reliable and long periods of record exhibit similar behavior with generally higher mins and less duration of snow cover.

Fall is usually a torch going by the last couple of decades, so that's not really going out on a limb. According to my calculations, if you look at the five SNE first order sites, of the last 20 falls, 9 of them were torches (three month departures 1.5+), 14 of them above average (at least +0.3), and 3 below average. I think this may be a factor in hurting SNE fall foliage.

Alaska and the high plains have the highest variance in temperatures especially Montana and the Dakotas. The top 57 sites with the highest monthly standard deviation in mean temp are all in AK, MT, ND, SD, or MN. New England states are generally middle of the road.
