  1. From Mammoth Mtn page  3/25

What struck me as 90" of water in the snowpack.  I guess if New England averages 40" or so inches of rain per year the Sierra could have that much water in the snowpack.

According to the old ski patrol records we have in-house, this season has now beaten out 2011 for inches of snowfall and 1969 for the amount of water that has fallen in the snowpack. As of now, there are over 90 inches of water recorded in the snow at Mammoth Pass. With more snow and cool days ahead over the next week who knows maybe the 700-inch mark at the 9000-foot level will be within reach.
With all the snow on the ground, Mammoth Mountain announced on Tuesday that they plan to run for winter sports at the Main Lodge through at least the month of July. If there happens to be a cooler summer they plan to run longer and hopefully beat the closing day record set in 1995 on August 14th.”

    Pretty epic positive bust ...

KpI of 8/ G4 mag raged on while of course cloudy in New England.   Seems we've have 7 or 8 Kp > 6 events in the past 15 years, and 100% of them were cloudy.  Heh.

This one appears to have completely slipped by forecaster awareness, and it was potent too.

I slept through it but clouds broke enough for a friend to capture them over Newfound Lake.  Camera's are always take longer exposures than the eye so they look more dramatic.  I saw them once,  I think 2003 and it was beautiful.  Still a total solar eclipse is the most spectacular experience.  Fingers crossed it will be clear in NNE next April 8th

Off topic but with the discussion of places to live, any thoughts, opinions, recommendations on future retirement places (maybe not full year but part year)? Lake Placid region, Stowe area, Mad River, New Hampshire lakes or Whites region?

Funny I had a conversation with a client this week in NJ that had bought a very expensive home in CO as a second home and to visit their daughter that’s been living out there years. After owning a couple years now they are selling because they’re daughter and her family want to move east again to New England.

They got tired of poor air quality, wildfires, no water, no water for recreation, Californians moving into the area in droves. So looking back north east.

I moved from Metro Boston to my small 1000 person town of Bridgewater NH 20 years ago.  It's in Central NH on Newfound Lake.  Area is in the foothills of the Whites.  10 miles off of Rt 93 so quick trip to Boston which is 100 miles south.  85" of snow.  No crime to speak off.  One traffic light within 10 miles.  We have one police officer.  House prices have increased but no sales tax and in comparison things are cheap here.  We don't lock our house and keep keys in the car. ( no funny ideas, my weathercams will catch you!) Everyone knows everyone so a very strong sense of community.  With global warming NNE will be the go to place in 50 years.

Euro is sloppy up here. Looks like a couple inches of glop transitioning from S to IP to ZL.

Then there is next Tuesday.  We get buried again.  I am ready for this endless winter to end.  Jealous of my family down in Southern RI with green grass

6-7” puts me right on 100”.

Same here.  I'm around 92".   A couple of interesting tidbits.  I have not yet hit 50F this year!  I thought we might do it today but at 1:45pm I seem stuck at around 47F. Hard to believe with so much warm air just south of here. I attached my Davis weather station graph.  A few 49s but no 50F.  CAD really helps, and great snow retention too.  I have  had near total snow cover since our Dec storm that gave me 19".  We had errands down your way Brian and there is a huge difference in snow cover in just the 20 mile drive south.  Finally, we had our first grass to appear on our South slopes yesterday.  The deer were right on it last evening.

I went to SC for the last total eclipse. It is a truly extraordinary and awe inspiring event. I will drop everything to see the next one in 2024.

This one is a little longer and wider so it will be darker at centerline.  Early afternoon.  What are chances of clear skies, 40%.  Temperatures start dropping before totality so convective clouds wane.  The beach towns of Western Mexico are the place to go.  Long eclipse and near 0 chance of rain.

  7. Total Eclipse coming in one year  April 8 2024

Another total eclipse is coming.  We are very fortunate in our lifetimes to have one pass through NNE.  We have had annular solar eclipses and a total eclipse just missed in March 1970  (Carly Simon, You flew your Lear Jet up to Nova Scotia to see a total eclipse of the sun)  If anyone has ever experienced a total eclipse it is one of the craziest most memorable things in your life.  I traveled to Aruba to see one.

To experience daytime turning into night you have to be in a path of totality.  Even 99% of the sun being hidden still ruins the experience.  I have attached the path below.  I expect the media to start honking a bit this April 8th and every Airbnb and hotel will start booking up.  So if you are interested in seeing it the time to book is now I would think.  Of course this time of year NNE could be clouded over too)

By the way you want to try to be on the centerline for the longest and darkest eclipse.

  8. 30.5F  Light snow.   I did have some steady snow the past 3 hours and picked up 1.5" additional

6" last night,  about .5" daylight hours and 1.5" this evening so 8ish".

That brings me to 90" for the season.  So the first above normal season in 3 years.

Congrats to all that got the big snows!!

I’ll take the under…just hoping to get over a foot here.

32.4F  Visabilty 2 miles   About 1/4" inch the past 2 hours in areas that had no dim sun earlier.  So I will up my total to 6.25".  Perhaps if I had woken up around 5am and measured then and cleared I could push 7"!  I'm so jealous of you two!

  10. For Central NH in my area this has been an exasperating day for me.  Over the past few days the models really did well with the downwind snow hole until last evening.  I feel like an idiot because I post for the 7000 member Newfound Lake face book group.  I have done very well this winter compared to say WMUR and locally wherever I go people seem to know me and thank me.  On Sunday I was going to go with 3-6",  quite a bit less than the NWS but never hit the send button.  I was too unsure.  Then last evening the models really bumped up Plymouth NH to 1" liquid and Newfound Lake area up to 1.20".  I never posted that 3-6" since this storm and the northward loop made me nervous.  So I went with 8-14" with most on the hills.  Yeah I had 6" up here but where most people live  today there was a couple of slushy inches with the dim sun at times.   Trying to explain downwind of the Whites will not cut it.  This forecast is a D unless we get a few inches this evening.  I'm stuck over 32F up here at elevation so I doubt that will happen.  Argghhh...

I have been stuck at 33.1 or 33.2 for the past couple of hours.  Finally the dim sun is gone and light snow about 3/4 vis.  Actually as I type I just ticked to 33.0F as the snow is picking up.  Radar looks good for us as everything rotates in from the east.  Interestingly the wind was really blowing this morning but has really calmed down.

  12. 33.2F  Light snow.   I did not take a measurement around dawn but guessing 6".  Since then we have just had very light snow with no accumulation.  It is finally picking up with a vis below 1 mile but the temperature for my elevation and latitude is surprisingly high.  I really though I would stay 31 or 32F all day.
