  1. Spot on. I know what to set my main oil furnace t-stat to kick on when it can't keep up. Which down on the shoreline in CT is pretty rare.
  2. True on the expensive side but better then burning oil. The going cost is about 4-5k in New England for a Mitsubishi or Fujitsui installed. These were invented in Japan where the market demands reliability and efficiency and they definitely deliver on that. I have been warm all day by not creating heat but pumping it in from outside. The technology is certainly intriguing and when you have a unit your like how is this thing pumping out crazy heat right now...
  3. I installed a mini split heat pump a month ago and have been blown away by the heating performance. The technology is pretty nuts where you aren't creating heat your moving it at 388% efficiency. 100 percent heating capacity at 5 degrees using no fossil fuels and 388 percent efficiency....This is going to be the future of heating and cooling... I get these are expensive to install but these units destroy every other heat source on efficiency.
  4. This billboard just went up on 91 just outside New Haven. Only 60 miles to legal weed. Haha
  5. My work van is showing 60 down here in SW CT. Eating my lunch outside in it.
  6. Looks like a pretty nice week coming up. Will be nice to get some outdoor stuff done like stacking more firewood. The lower heating load will be real nice as well.
  7. For those into weather sealing/insulation FLIR makes a cheap infared camera for $150 that attaches to your smartphone now. This thing is absolutely amazing for summer and winter air leaks. You can literally see through walls. I could never figure out why my central air sucked untill I started looking around with the FLIR. Discovered the hvac hacks had the return connected right into the attic. The central air was sucking in 100+ attic air in the summer.
  8. I am in the middle of going all out insulating my house. I was using a FLIR camera and the amount of cold pouring through cracks was insane Weds night. I couldn't believe what some air sealing and insulation could do though. The before and after with the FLIR camera is mind blowing in the difference.
  9. There is another one now in Central CT. Are they lake effect streamers or something else? Edit: NYC thread says its a hige paper fire in NJ. Maybe a fire showing up in CT as well?
  10. Snow Squall warning up for the shoreline counties in CT.
  11. Light snow breaking out in the New Haven area. Looks like these are going to come through right around rush hour. Heavier bands look to be moving in along the shoreline. Can see 95 being a disaster soon.
  12. Does anyone know if planes can operate in those temps? Can they take off and land? How could ground crews work in that? I would imagine if not thats going to be a mess with tons of airports closed.
  13. What time are the squalls expected to roll through the New Haven area? I plan on leaving work early depending on the time. 95 can suck in events like this. Don't feel like sitting in my car for hours if it does turn out bad.
  14. There are so many cheap diy options now where you just install all the wireless sensors yourself. I think Simplisafe is the more poular one. I would definitely install outdoor motion cameras. I have Ring floodlight cameras and love them. I used mine just recently when my camera went off late at night when I was away and some kids were acting suspicious looking into my cars. You can activate at 130db siren on it. Scares them away real quick.
  15. Installed a mini split Saturday. This thing is impressive in cold weather. Its rated to full heat output at 5 degrees and cuts out a-13. I used my FLIR and the condenser temp was -20 but it was still putting out 90 degrees at the duct. Cold weather heat pumps are impressive.
  16. I installed a mini split/heat pump Saturday. Screw oil and natural gas. I have solar panels withe excessive capacity so its essentially free to run. It claims full heat output to 5 degrees and it cuts out at -13. This weekend was a great test run and at -1 it was still putting out incredible heat. Beyond impressed with it so far.
  17. -26 wind chill at BDL. Impressive.
  18. Ton of people without power tonight.... Neighbor is a lineman for UI in the New Haven area and was called in and they told him to expect to work for 3 days.. Almost 10K without power in North Haven. https://www.uinet.com/wps/portal/uinet/outages/reportviewoutage/viewoutagemap/
  19. Jet Blue 1098 is my flight tomorrow at 530 pm.
  20. I posted this in the mid atlantic forum as well. Looking forward to the storm down here. I am in DC for a wedding tonight and have a jetblue flight back to Hartford from Reagan airport at 5 pm tomorrow. Thoughts on that flight happening?
  21. I am in DC for a wedding tonight and have a jetblue flight back to Hartford from Reagan airport at 5 pm tomorrow. Thoughts on that flight happening? We were planning on taking a cab or uber to the airport. Looking forward to the storm though. Its been pretty much snowless back home in CT.
  22. IBM Wants to Use a Sensor in Your Phone to Create Ultra High-Res Weather Forecasts https://earther.gizmodo.com/ibm-wants-to-use-a-sensor-in-your-phone-to-create-ultra-1831557349
  23. How is the cold weather performance? I haven't really experienced any real cold yet but they claim to run down to -13. Fujitsu and Mitsubishi seem to be the leaders in reliability and efficiency.
