  1. I had to make another quick round trip to the NEK yesterday and it sure was nice to see winter and drive while snow was falling during the day. The roads were pretty much dry but I'm glad I swapped to the winter wheels/tires on Thursday because with temps in the 20's my summer tires would have been like hockey pucks on the cold pavement. Looks like some snow potential around here in the fairly near future :)

    Boooo. What's your temp?

33 here, about .3" on the board and still falling

Hovering between 35<>38. From the webcams I can find active this morning it looks like the wet/white line is around Wingdale/Dover Plains. I'd be curious to see what it's like over the higher terrain but there aren't any cams over about 700 feet that I can find.

Looks like I made the right choice; as some light snow has broken out here with the temp down to 21 F with a very gusty North wind.

Up at the station just outside of Lead / elev. 6070'; its down to 13 F.

    Welcome to winter

I just called them and the gentleman indicated that I do not even have propane; but rather natural gas as the source of heat...

He indicated that it is delivered as electricity might be delivered; and there is no gauge or tank to be read to ascertain if it is nearly empty...

It is interesting; how well-versed I am on ethereal matters; and yet I can be so utterly lacking when it comes to simple affairs that occupy the temporal realm...

Feet on the ground there girl, get with it ;) Where you're at now you need to be more in touch with this stuff. I'm surprised you didn't realize that there isn't a very large propane tank somewhere outside the house that's accessible to the street. There should be a meter where the gas line comes into the house.

I wouldn’t recommend doing that with a moose

In most circumstances I'd agree with you and I would do all I could to slow down and reduce the impact but unless I could guarantee being able to maintain control (grassy median or similar) or at least have a fair chance at it I would still choose to hit it rather than point the car off the road. The elk I hit was at around midnight 30 miles from the nearest town and it was 15* and snowing. Thankfully it slipped and fell so I didn't take it out full on and I was in a nearly 6,000 pound Landcruiser wagon so I pretty much went over it but did get a piece of antler through the radiator and made a general mess but I survived to be able to tell a great story rather than some other folks I know that chose to try and miss them and lost to immovable objects or launched off and rolled.

I've taken a few trips; into both N. Dakota & NE Wyoming; and getting caught on the roads out here in winter is a serious matter.  Many of the state & county roads come equipped with gates at the intersections with the larger highways; gates that lock shut during large snow events so as to preclude any travel into almost entirely uninhabited regions; places where if one broke down during a bad storm; it would be all over but the crying.

Places like that taught me to never make a radical maneuver to avoid a critter in the road. I've watched cars fly off the road to miss things that they would have plowed right through and been able to continue on their way instead of having a wrecked car and being stuck out in the middle of nowhere freezing their patooties off waiting for help. A couple of times I've given people rides into the next town because I wasn't going to sit and burn a tank of gas waiting for a tow in the morning. I've creamed deer and once an elk rather than risking my safety to miss it. Thankfully none of the things I've hit disabled my vehicle but I'd rather be disabled on the road than upside down in a ditch or possibly worse, at least if you're on the road you have a chance at maintaining control but once you're off the road it's out of your hands entirely.

Remember that the Entire Universe is predicated on precision mathematics; and it is from this concept….inexplicably & inextricably linked to hyper-dimensional physics….a tetrahedron inscribed in a sphere….upon which all things stand.

That's why my world is so fkd up... Math and I have never played well together

...It's always a great feeling that first day in late March when you can open up the windows and breathe in the fresh air after being cooped up for the previous 14 weeks or so.

I love snow as much as anyone, but I have no use for cold. And the older I get, the more and more I hate the Winter. I take solace in knowing that legitimate Winter in these parts is usually no more than a 12 week affair, and hopefully this year it will be even less.

You need to get a fat bike and some good active outdoor winter clothing. There's nothing like getting out in the woods during the winter when everything is in a state of hibernation and the snow is just right. You don't even notice the cold if you're dressed right. There are some great places around the metro area for winter riding and just over the line in PA there are groomed trail networks where fat bikes are allowed and you can go for miles and miles in the quiet solitude of winter. There's no such thing as being cooped up, it's what you make of it ;)

I'm up at Bash Bish Falls and she's roaring today... mist soaking me and the camera hundreds of feet downwind. My guess is the falls and creeks in the area are at their highest discharge levels in a couple years. Hope to hit Kaaterskill and maybe a couple others in the next day or two while the runoff is still at peak.

Cool, I've seen it running hard in the spring and it's like a much bigger falls when it's like that. Lake Mahopac is out of its banks right now, more than I remember it in the 21 years I've been here.
