  1. Again, that goes back to the warm nights more so than the days. My AC has been working overtime at night and it didn't used to be that way. I knew I should have come down today. Hopefully next Wednesday is nearly as good. What are the water temps like in the bay? I bet it's pretty warm if a north wind isn't moderating the beach temps somewhat.
  2. That means you're also close to Yorktown. I've done my time at Blue and can take it or leave it, if you want a tour of Y'town that's my spot. It's fun stuff. I also do a fair bit of riding further north on both the east and west sides of Putnam that most people don't ever see. Soon enough the hand ought to be back up to speed :fingerscrossed: and I'll be back at it.
  3. I just did a quick round trip to Toronto and back and in some areas the hardwood forest is nearly gone. Around the Niagara river above the falls it's the worst with it looking like late fall because the trees are all bare and dead. In most areas it looks like other species are filling the gaps but the diversity is taking a hit. Westchester is terribly overrun with creeper and other vines in some areas and much less so in others. As you go further north it's less spotty until it levels out around northern Dutchess/southern Columbia. @Hitman , we should meet for a ride sometime. My hand is still buggered up from a wreck downhilling at the end of July but it's slowly getting better so I'll get out riding more next month.
  4. I was in Syracuse this afternoon and it was 90* and super humid. In Toronto at 10:30pm it was still 79* when I walked into my hotel
  5. I've always wondered why some trees turn early and others don't. Sometimes there can be two of the same species just a few feet apart and they will react completely differently. Another thing I'm seeing this year that's really disturbing is a very high number of standing dead trees, some really large ones too. I don't know what type of trees they are but something leads me to think Ash and it's the emerald ash borer damage I've been hearing so much about.
  6. We're thinking 9/5 for our next family beach day outing. Most schools go back that day, some the day before so it should be pretty much empty. I need to get out to the east end of LI for some work stuff so we'll probably go to Montauk. Do they still have the lifeguards on duty at that point on weekdays?
  7. It's kinda nice out there this morning I almost feel guilty appreciating it knowing what some of my friends are dealing with out west. AQI ratings between 150 to as high as 490
  8. I wasn't expecting rain this morning but... here it is.
  9. Yeah yeah copy and paste... Closest local mesonet site has .75" for last night but the 3 closest WU sites all have well over 1", they are between 1.3 and 1.48". I know it rained steadily for several hours with a few embedded heavier periods but I am surprised to see it so far above 1". Unfortunately KDXR didn't report any rain at all but does have ~5-6 hours of rain in their observations so that station is useless (again). I'm really looking forward to things drying out here over the next week or so Another fun episode of microclimates doing their thing and this range of higher hills that I'm in squeezing out every last drop.

  11. When you run over them with the lawnmower they pop and spew spores all over like smoke. I turned my mower over the other day to clean underneath and they were growing in there too.
  12. Yeah after the March and May storms that brought down so many trees around here as people were cutting them out and cleaning up they got fined and penalized for doing too much and opening up the potential for too much sunlight to get through to the water and potentially raising the water temperature. Sometimes there really wasn't much choice because it was so tangled up. Apparently they were supposed to leave the mess in their yards because it was within 100 feet of the water course. F that...
  13. If you were going to do a beach day on the east end of LI would you want to be there tomorrow, Monday, or Tuesday? I can go either day.
  14. The obvious part of two of the drains were cleaned this spring but they didn't snake between them and down the hill to the outlet so it backs up and overflows all over the place. They used to snake it and blow it out but it was a big procedure because the outlet is about 400 feet away and ~50 down the hill so they haven't done it in a few years. There's also some debate about how it drains into a creek that's part of the NYC watershed.
  15. See edit above My neighbor has had to pump water out of his pool a few times a week for the last 5 weeks or so. There are 3 storm drains on my block and they're all blocked up with crap and the properties below them are getting wrecked, washed out yards and driveways getting undermined when the water rages through. The town said we don't pay enough in taxes for them to care
  16. Another ~1.9" today edit: After the local mesonet site updated it looks like it was actually .86 so it must have had a bunch from the Friday night episode still in there when I looked. Still, it's 2.7 for 2 days.
  17. Yeah boy that was some rain last night eh! I got just shy of 2" between about 6pm and midnight in several intense rounds. The constant rolling thunder and lightning was a great show too. My backyard almost dried out enough to mow it for the first time in a few weeks before this but now it's back to sink in 2-3" if you step off the patio. It's getting thick out there #bringbackthedrought
  18. That was some serious rain yesterday and last night. I got just shy of 2" between 6 and about midnight in several intense rounds. The incessant rolling thunder and near constant lightning was pretty cool. I actually stepped outside to listen to the thunder just rolling around in the hills for a while because it doesn't sound like that very often.
  19. You guys that want good lightning ought to come up here. It's been crackling, rumbling and grumbling consistently for an hour and a half now. Short rounds of very heavy rain started around 6 and by 9 it became mostly steady moderate to heavy and hasn't let up since.
  20. Between the smoke and humidity it's pretty unpleasant out there this morning.
  21. Yuck, this air quality is rotten. Looks like we're gonna get banged around pretty good in a few hours, 35dbz returns headed this way.
