  1. pretty pedestrian event when the line came, a few gusts and heavy rain but now just constant rumbling of distant thunder, usually comes before the rain but now it's after, odd, also sirens here in Winsted for over an hour, something happened before the rain not sure what yet

  2. bout a half inch on deck, cars and grass areas... started to accumulate on the driveway and side of the road but it stopped and sun came out now we drip until tonight, however, the hills around me, about 1200+', have the trees caked, very picturesque.

  3. first day of baseball practice tomorrow and Tuesday, outta be fun for the boys, told em to dress like they were going sledding... I remember as a kid making contact on a cold day and the sting was real for a grip

It’s just been the lack of usual long torchy stretches that have defined many of the past 6-7 winters. This winter almost reminds me of 2000-01 without the monster snowstorms. That winter wasn’t particularly cold at all, but it was almost totally devoid of torches so the snow just slowly piled up over the interior and didn’t melt all winter. March was pretty cold but that was more a function of so much storminess rather than arctic outbreaks ala 2014 or 2015.

that was also the last winter I recall having so much ice that just wouldn't melt because of the sustained basically climo cold and no torches, I lived in Waterbury then and we had a similar snow to ice storm, don't remember what date, but the driveway and walks were completely hit that winter

I would like 9.5 more inches to hit my range.

I think that's about what I need to get to 40, I have to check, but not a storm over 5" all season, what I'd give for a big dog and straight to warm... preaching to the choir I know

if I had a buck for every week plus model storm that hasn't been in the last few years I'd be a little richer... I had a feeling this winter was going to be bad, but it ain't the bad that most of us like, at least it's felt like winter, and we still have something on the ground, for over a month now, that's impressive considering last few years

I think, all in all what Chris was talking about, direct sun areas, dripping off the roofs etc. And our public works lay alot of salt in certain areas,  and of course a little of sun, down it goes...and thats why our city and others are now watching salt piles, most sellers are out.......I was told , past winters were "mild", so production this year was limited(that was from granite state minerals/Portsmouth , NH)

However, they have a mountain at the dock, 80-90% of our state purchase from them, towns/city have first dibs.

    I'm sitting @ 65 % capacity for now.

This is something, was just talking to a couple of Winsted folk, and the town (and most others in CT) are out of salt, the state has been delivering to them limited amounts. No ice melt to be found anywhere for a few days anyway, and our driveway is still locked in ice, even direct sunlight areas... I love winter and weather it brings, but I'm about done at this point, never thought I'd say that in Feb... guess I'm getting old.

  8. man it's a different kind of cold out there, not sure if it's the insane amount of ice, wind, but temps ain't crazy cold, just feels worse. my driveway is literally a skating rink of about 2" solid in shaded areas, I was out for hours chopping yesterday, coop door is hit, frost heaves damn near moved the whole thing. hoping for something substantial, but this ice gots to go first...we leave 3/1 for Tampa spring training, and watch, that'll be when it happens.

I got a new Toro 2 years ago, would have got the EGO if I was buying this year but wasn't too confident in electric back then. My new one has the stick shift for the auger, hard to get used to that. Of course I haven't has that much practice last couple of years.

yeah I hear ya, the ariens also has a stick, only for the vertical shoot, what I don't like is to rotate the shoot, I have reach around and crank a handle, used to just have a linkage on the main controls I would rotate, that didn't need fixing, but I do enjoy the 0 radius turning, makes quick work on the driveway, a broken walk is tough though.

It is the 24” self propelled 2 stage.   So far I love the power.  Still miss the steering of my old Crapsman.  But holy cow does it throw the snow.  Way further than the old one.

get extra batteries.   That was the issue yesterday.  The density of the snow drained em. I had to swap them out a couple of times before I could finish.

how long do the batteries last, cleaning dense stuff? we just got a new ariens a couple years ago and went 28" 360cc, that thing blows the densest snow like 25', only thing I don't like is they switched the gears to opposite of the old one, so took a while to get used to that, overall nice machine, we debated getting an ego

It snowed in May of 1996 in part's of New York State.  Very cold Fall Winter and Spring.

I'm 53 and I can't remember a winter with such consistent cold as this Winter. December, January and halfway through February. Cold but fairly dry in SNE.

yeah I'm about the same age, was thinking maybe 93-94 in terms of temp, it was cold that season but not much snow, that I remember anyway.

  12. picked up another at least .75" sometime after I went to bed, roads, driveway, walk are an absolute sheet of ice, driveway looks like about a half inch of straight ice, told wife to just stay home today, and I ain't going anywhere... let the sun cook

    Screenshot 2025-02-16 201710.png

yeah it's odd, that's north Canton, that area is basically woods, couple homes is all, 5.5 in Suffield was an official ob too?

I open the photo in Paint and resize to 30%.  That usually does the trick

I usually take a screenshot of the pic, it reduces the size so it can be uploaded, I had the same issue for a while until I figured that out.
