Terrible - hope it wasn't a complete break or compound. The .2" Sunday actually prevented the skating rink I'd feared and yesterday's 0.3" added a bit more white "gravel". Only a handful of flakes on the windshield overnight here. GYX thinks 2-4 here but ratios might be anywhere as temps will be cold - 20:1 with good dendrites or the 8:1 cornmeal we frequently see when north-fringed.

I grew up in Morris County, NJ, and several sites there had more snow last February than I had all winter. As for top 3, most NNJ sites with PORs 60+ years would have had 6-7 winters with more snow, as the months other than February were pretty lean. Poking around in cocorahs, mostly on big-Feb sites, I failed to find any with full-season snow above the mid 60s, and 47-48, 57-58, 60-61, 66-67, 77-78, 95-96 and 10-11 had considerably more than that.

Closer to 20 here after the -6 low. FVE was reporting 5° at 3 PM and the cold valleys HUL/PQI) were well into the minus teens this morning. A -20 at Estcourt Station would not surprise.

-6 here, coldest of the season so far. However, 8 years ago it was -31 here on this date. (And 41 years back in Fort Kent, Jan 4 was -20/-34 with 0.5" snow.)

Grandkids in SNJ may see more snow there than they did at our place last month.

Our 1-2" forecast turned into 0.2" as things quickly dried up. That has been the typical outcome here on end-of-storm snow change events. Of course, having only 0.16" total precip for Jan 1-2 mandates not much snowfall. Solid 6" pack remains and down to 6° this morning. Probably subzero tomorrow. Grandkids loved playing in the snow during their 12/21-30 visit, but after they left, we found our dryer full of their snow pants. Now the SNJ forecast is for 4-8" today, perhaps giving them a bigger dump than our tops so far, 4.8", but the kids will have to rough it with non-season clothing (which they will do with gusto).

Daughter, SIL and most/all the grandkids went through it shortly after Thanksgiving. She lost her taste for a while, and he was tired for some days after his episode (his schedule is more than full). We were concerned that it would nix their visit, but all was over by 12/15 and they arrived here on the 21st and left on the 30th, leaving all happy but exhausted.

Don't know if the Stellar's sea eagle sighted at Maine's midcoast will stay around, as its normal locale is the Kamchatka region. Hard core birders are swarming Georgetown to punch another ticket on their life list. Impressive bird, the heaviest of all the eagles, wingspan to 8 feet.

Another dusting here. I had to stretch a bit to call yesterday's dusting a tenth, so today's lesser "dump" means the 2-day total is an honest 0.1". 22 days with frozen precip this month, 13 with measurable, and sill more than 5" BN. At least the 8" pack is near average.

I/We had several Beetles, 62, 65 and 71. The heaters never worked well, as that little engine in the rear couldn't generate enough heat to do much up front, though the first 2 had the heat stuck wide open and would blow plenty in the summer.

Hasn't been milder than 34 here since 12/17. Last 5 days the max has averaged 32 (3° AN) and the min 20 (9° AN). But only 1.5" during those days.

NYC also had a max of 2 that day; their next lowest max is 4, on 12/30/1880 and 2/5/2018. We were visiting family that Christmas and headed back to Fort Kent in our 2WD C-10 Chevy after dinner on the 29th. We hit snowy roads in southern Mass and flakes in the air a few miles into Maine. That became S+ before we passed PWM and by the time we approached BGR at 3:30 AM my eyes felt like the oncoming flakes were little knives. We tried to sleep until daytime at the Newburgh rest area, but it was too cold, so we stopped at the HOJO near the airport so I could suck down some coffee. That worked until Medway but triggered an emergency stop at the rest area there. Only picnic tables and an outhouse there back then, but blessedly there was TP - using powder snow at 15° was not a pleasant prospect. North of there the wind switched to NW and was blowing across the road - a gust meant white out, especially when we approached a plow truck doing the left side. Startling to be 100' from the yellow strobes and have instant blackout. Total in Fort Kent was a bit over 12" and they'd had another 2 feet on 12/26-27. (4" storm in NNJ, folks asked if we'd brought the snow from Maine.) Our 1965 blue Beetle was merely a lump of snow, not a square inch was visible. Five minutes after we arrived home, the NW gales hit town and we couldn't see across the street. Fortunately, that didn't happen as we drove PQI to CAR through the potato fields.

Grinch for sure! We get Grinch events around Christmas in about 2/3 of our winters here, but 12/25/2020 stands alone for awfulness. The 0.1" dusting gives this month 21 days with flakes, 13 with measurable snow. If we get any frozen tomorrow, the 22 days would tie December 2007 for the most in any month as we enter my 24th winter here. 12/07 had 46.2" 12/21 has 13.7" so far. The month of midgets (and ZR)

This December and last will finish close to each other for snowfall, but there's 8" at my stake today and last year it was brown ground.

I've used them but actually do a bit better with the plain ones - odd.

Really nice carrots!

Rub it in; rub it in!

I leave nearly half the carrots in the ground and pile leaves atop. They should be dug within a day or three of the snow melting off in spring, before they start their 2nd year root growth. I've had minimal rodent damage under the snow, and Bolero (from Johnny's) is sweet in the fall and sweeter in the spring, in part because fresh carrots that season usually travel thousands of miles to get here. Other overwintering/growth is impractical w/o a heated greenhouse. Each of our winters have gotten down to at least -12 and only 5 of 23 have failed to reach -20. (And 4 have touched the -30s.)

Cute little event this morning, with some occasional moderate snow with nice dendrites but total of 1.3" from 0.10" LE. Makes 20 days with snow this month and 12 with measurable, but the 13.6" total is 4.8" BN (if we get no more before Saturday). Some tomorrow night, perhaps, but looks like no chance of 4"+. Looks nice and the grandkids get to play in the powdery surface.

Right on the water but any wind direction north of due east has considerable travel over land before reaching P-2.

Average at Pit 2 should be in the 70" neighborhood.

Through yesterday we've had flakes on 19 of 26 days this month, with measurable snow on 11, for a grand total of 12.3". With only 0.2" last month, we're 8.5" BN for the season, assuming none today. 8 separate events (so called) this month and only 3 had more than an inch. sad

That was the case at Farmington. Without the 43" dump in late month, they had only 121" for the winter, ~30" AN. Euro pretty meh, Looked more like a few cents instead of nickels and dimes. That's how the Christmas "storm" worked out - forecast 1-2 and final 0.4 (in 10+ hours).
