Merry Christmas everyone! Mother-in-law looks to have 3” or so in Woodfin from the pic she sent my wife. Looking forward to seeing everything in a blanket of snow this evening when we get back. @Local Yokel Wx, any report from your buddy on the Jackson side of Balsam Gap?

Merry Christmas boys!
For those that are seeing snow I hate you all
Kidding!
Enjoy it
.Heck I’m missing it, I really hate them!

Y’all reel this one in, hate I’ll miss the possibility of heavy stuff falling overnight but maybe I’ll see some flurries in Hickory and come home tomorrow to 3-4” on the ground with some still falling. Clouds were looking snowy on top of Lynn Lowry when we left a little while ago.

Snow chase #2 for this season is here!! I’m debating targeting Brasstown Bald at 4700’ or Woody Gap at 3200’. My initial thoughts are the 1500’ won’t make a big difference and to stick with familiar chase territory at Woody Gap.
I’d want as much elevation as I could get, especially if chasing.

Wind has been whipping all morning here, rain has been steady. Need to see what limbs are on the roof, heard quite a few loud bangs up there.

The wind is already roaring on the ridgetops tonight. Sounds like a jet engine.

Loaded presents in the car earlier and it was even starting to work that roar down to my elevation with some very strong gusts.

One thing about this changeover if the cold air rushes in is that most will go from heavy rain to heavy snow in a matter of moments. Some could possibly see a thunderstorm then the temps just free fall...
That’s what I’m thinking as well. This front is going to be like something they see out in Denver.

Got the hose bibs insulated for this stout cold shot and am looking forward to seeing some snow on the ground when I get back from Hickory Friday evening. Hopefully see some flakes flying and sticking here by the time we head down off the mountain tomorrow afternoon and can bring some down to the foothills with us even if it’s just flurries.

Wife just sent me a pic, got a dusting at the house. Will be good to get home tonight.

Wife said it snowed a little yesterday at the house, more in town though. Keeping an eye on next week from afar, I’ll get back from TX Sunday night.

Sounding for what I tried to do as central Haywood. I’m on the western border so even worse for me. Northern down into the Central Mountains can score, but unless you are on the Escarpment in the Southern Mountains CAD setups are no bueno majority of the time.

I don’t think CAD events are a go in his neck of the woods.
Nope, no CAD for us. Just a cold rain if it’s a true Wedge setup.

Its fascinating to see the differences when I drive to work in the mornings. Often at my house near the Catawba its in the 20s or near 30 and by the time I am halfway up Old Fort mountain it will be 45 and then back down in the 30s in Swannanoa.
Yea I was thinking inversion this morning from the temps I was seeing depending where I was in elevation but the back down to 30 at nearly the same elevation at 4000’ there me for a loop. Our mountains are unique and I love them.

Temps all over the place this morning. Left the house at 5 am and had upper 20’s-30 there, mid-20’s down around Sylva and the Tuckaseegee valley, 38 on 64 at Whiteside Mtn then back to around 30 where I am north of Highlands.

I about froze in the stand this am. Are you still seeing any rut activity?
I think I grunted him in, he showed up about 5 minutes after I had. Ton of fresh rubs at that spot.

16 when I left my truck outside of Highlands this morning to hunt. Dusting of snow down there where I was above 4000’. Nice cold winter morning with ice in my beard. Anyone rooting for the deer will be glad to know he escaped unharmed because I missed haha.

too funny, my friend over in balsam was complaining about just that. I'll take what i can get since im below 3500'
I’m ready to experience a good synoptic system, I want to see what the Balsams can ring out during a Miller A or even overrunning event with good cold air to work with because I know what they do when it comes to those systems when it’s plain rain.

Managed a quick dusting here in Waynesville. Granular snow.
Temp 30F
Trace of sleet and graupel here. Headed to grab dinner and the top of Grassy Bald across 74 from me is white, Plott Balsam is white down to probably 4000’. Angle orientation wasn’t and isn’t right at this moment, just based on last year and this year I can tell the angle that Waynesville proper gets snow during a flow event is different than the angle I need to see decent flakes. We seem to at least see something fall but being below 4000’ things have to be just right to get more than a dusting. Peaks of sun at home but solid low cloud deck in downtown.

Either light graupel or tiny flakes falling here, we’ll see if we can get some better stuff bet over Lynn Lowry and down to Balsam Gap.

Yea your buddy and I are basically the same elevation I bet, he’s just barely on the Jackson side south side of 74 and I’m barely on the Haywood side on the north side of 74. Seems like when it’s heavier precip it’s all sleet and lighter stuff is basically a misty sprinkle with a few sleet pellets. Mid to upper 30’s up here when I got back from down in Hazelwood.
-
Finished up walking the dogs and had some sleet start falling, just a passing shower though. Scratch that, still sleeting away.

Wet ground and plain rain here thus far

Good to see you back posting more local, always enjoyed your posts when you would fire up the guns when I was down in Charlotte. Seems we’ve got Haywood and it’s microclimates covered pretty good with posters.

Great pics everyone! Looks like Buncombe north of 40 was a sweet spot to be from what I’ve seen. Was a cold 31 and blustery when we left Hickory at 11:30.
