2021-2022 Fall/Winter Mountains Thread
WxKnurd replied to BlueRidgeFolklore's topic in Southeastern States
Some tiny flurries when I left just now, sitting at freezing. Nothing out in upper Crabtree besides the flurries, looks like Chambers Mtn and it’s ridge line along with Crabtree Bald was the stopping point, both have some fresh snow up top and Crabtree Bald is currently getting a snow shower it looks like along with back towards TN. -

Dry here, holding steady at 34. Looks like snow showers falling just to my south when I look out the window. -

Engulfed in fog now. Watched it slowly work it’s way over and down the one mountain and now up mine. -

34.7 and rain here, thought I’ve seen the occasional flake mixed it. Temp has been steadily dropping. -

Last year was decent, this year there’s been maybe two or three events and that includes Monday. -

16 this morning here on my side of Haywood, wind is finally calm. A couple days to get ready for the next system, whatever it brings. -

I’ve got a buddy with an Airbnb up there if you are serious about it sometime, don’t know if it’s up as high as Buckethead though. -

Awesome photos @Buckethead , those are magazine worthy and really showcase how late the rut runs up here in the mountains. Weather, botanical and animal species, animal behavior, etc., we really an entirely different beast than the rest of the state. This week is setting up to be something we talk about a while. -

Snow has shut off here for now and t he sun is out, dark clouds to my NW towards Crabtree Bald. Up to 25, let’s see if the roads are better than yesterday. Forgot to add, had 2.5” on my board I cleared after the sleet and measure 9-10” in spots I thought didn’t have drift issues, so I feel good that 9.5-10” is about what our total ended up as. -

Can’t tell what’s blowing snow and what’s the light snow and diamond dust that’s been falling pretty much all morning. It would SLOWLY be adding up if not for the wind. Temp has been holding steady at 19 even with the sun peaking through and it being past 10 am now. -

I’d pay good money for them to never see another snow more than an inch due to their incessant whining. It really makes me only want to stick to this thread and get my mid-long range discussion from the Tennessee Valley sub. -

Wind woke me up at 4 and is still brutal out, 19 out there and that wind make it a good morning to linger around inside. -

Light snow still falling, took one final measurement for the night of 8” (I’m figuring we had about 9” total factoring In some compaction from the hour of sleet but I’ll confirm in the morning on a board I cleared off post sleet). We’ll see what tomorrow morning and throughout the day holds here with the NWFS. -

Backside has been here about 15-30 min, decent rate and dendrite size. It’s pure fluff too. -

I’m looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Gonna have to get a new snow shovel for clearing the deck and steps between now and next weekend when we hopefully do this all again. -

Slowly and steady drop now that daylight is fading, down to 24. That stuff from TN swings through it should be high ratio. -

Went up to the top of the mountain which is the county line, solid 7-8” here. Not really doing anything right now, some real fine light snow. Would be nice to squeeze out another 2” if the backend swings through just right to hit double digits. Of course might get 2” regardless with NWFS. -

Time for a walk. Measured 7” after the sleet so probably closer to 8” thus far. -

They aren’t fatties anymore but it’s ripping. Think I’ve reached the 8” mark, should have cleaned the deck off before the sleet but wasn’t thinking. -

Went to town, roads were a mess when I first left but the big plow trucks finally got to 209 when I headed back. Russ Ave in Waynesville was a wreck an an 74 wasn’t too hot either. Had heavy snow driving up into the mountains at the house but that must of been the tail end of this opening act as it’s just flurries now. Whiteout conditions due to wind down low around the pastures with no wind break when I first left. 6-7” readings throughout, 6.5” on my deck rail that is serving as my “official” board. Want to make a run at a foot if this backside stays juices and swings through just right but I think 8-10” looks like a strong possibility at least. 27 over 25.5 currently here. -

I know where I’d like to go outside Highlands, but that’s quite a drive from the new place in these conditions.
