Driving through the early January 2003 event just south of Worcester on 146 around midnight was some of the most difficult driving of my life. March 6, 2001 around New Haven around midnight on 95 was epic as well. December 23, 1997 around noontime 10 miles N of Dedham was also epic.

It boggles my mind how all these guys live and die with the models on a daily basis yet when there's a huge event in the middle of the night they sleep like babies! Closing in on 5 inches here in Newport but the intensity so far has been disappointing.

Thanks! Newport had about 8 inches in the January event and maybe 5 in the February event. The February event was a huge bust for anyone west and north of New Bedford with busted forecasts of a foot plus across the entire region. A bust but not as bad as the February 1989 bust.

The 80s weren't as bad as everyone thinks. 1985-1986 and 1988-1989 were awful but the rest of the decade particularly the first half of the decade was damn good particularly along the south coast. We had several big ones, including some like December 1981 that no one remembers or talks about. Slant sticking is more common today than back then and I believe the statistical snowfall averages are somewhat skewed. I remember catching the school bus and it seemed a lot colder back then compared to the last 20+ years.

Great point. Outside of a single, great event this season has had a lot of low impact fluff-jobs as Dick Albert used to say. Saturday was the ultimate stat-padder.

Unofficial report but the southern end of Newport had upwards of 12 inches. I'm in Boston right now and although Boston had 5 more inches the amount of snow looks the same probably because sleet makes snow banks more impressive.

Yes, I was wrong no two ways about it! Snowfall totals were significantly higher on the cape, the islands and Newport than I expected. I've been burned so many times down here with underperformers I don't always pay attention to the model consensus but in this instance the modeling did a good job.

The party ended at 4:45 in Newport. No sleet but the visibility improved and the accumulation basically stopped despite impressive radar returns. The pellets didn't begin in earnest till a couple minutes ago. Haven't measured but about 10 down here.

I always take the under in these set-ups in extreme Southern New England. We're gonna have newfound respect for the NAM tomorrow night when it's plain rain in the fringes of our forecast area. I'm thinking 9 in Bristol and 5 to 6 here in Newport. These accumulation maps are grossly overdone for places like Newport, the outer cape and the islands. Doesn't have much bearing on 90% of the folks in this subforum but if people take the time to produce a snowfall map they should put a little thought into making it as accurate as possible.

Good grief! Nantucket isn't getting 8-12 inches of snow. Kudos to BOX for finally trimming amounts. Took them long enough. Their 18-24 for new Bedford was the worst forecast I've ever seen. BOX used to be a damn good office. Before these offices were consolidated in the mid to late 90s we used to have some bad ones but the Taunton office did great work but we're now living in ELON'S NOAA.

New Bedford isn't getting 2 feet of snow! This is complete and utter madness! I live in Newport. I'm not getting over a foot of snow! I'll probably change to plain rain. These north tics in these SWFE type events are relentless. It'll sag south a bit at the eleventh hour but not enough to salvage this utterly preposterous forecast.

This'll be reduced, dramatically! But we'll save it for entertainment purposes.

It makes a difference. I was in fall river/Westport today. Bare ground near Horseneck beach in Westport and 2 to 3 inches on the ground in shaded areas in Fall River. I'm expecting the under on snow totals along south coastal beaches Newport on east.

How far inland are you?

Newport hasn't broken 5 inches since January 2022 except for a 6 incher in 2023 that was on the ground for barely a day. I doubt even Newport will be able to screw this one up but if there's a way to achieve a bust Newport will find it this weekend.

Newport is the greatest snowhole in new England other than block island. I remember a late February 1990 snowstorm. No mixing. Narragansett 7 miles away had 10 inches, Newport inexplicably had 3!

How far inland are you? No accumulation in the southern tip of Newport this am. Virtually impossible with any southerly wind component down here.
