Question. I'm looking at Air Now. Why is there such a large variability in air quality readings over such short distances? You can see green and red icons with widely different readings, within a couple miles of each other. It looks like they're all updating properly. Is it affected that much by the local geography?

I think the obvious choice would be to close it, and keep your house closed up tight until this passes. Ours is. If you have an air purifier, I would use it if it's affecting your health. Maybe run an air conditioner too? Minimize your time outside. This too shall pass, although the next couple of days is going to suck.

I was just panning around the website purpleair. The site is slow to load, but it looks like a couple of the stations are periodically topping 300 PM AQI. I don't know exactly what that means, but I do know it's the deepest red and highest category of alert.

We have a small garden here, in pots on the back deck. I just brought them all inside so my next salad doesn't taste like smoke.

You're essentially right down the road from me. It's awful here. A very eerie orangish/grey sky, not a speck of sunlight. It's down to 68 degrees, breezy, and smells like we're sitting next to a campfire. I just closed every window up tight and hope the worst passes soon. I feel like I'm on an alien world. Never saw this before.

0.01" earlier from a brief shower. Smoke is really thick out this afternoon and there is even a smoky smell to the air. I'd estimate visibility based on known points of reference to be no more than 1.5-2 miles. Definitely keeping the temps suppressed.

Finally seeing some semblance of sunshine at 8:15 AM. Cool, almost raw morning.

Low of 41 here. Some upper 30s out in the sticks of Sussex County as well as Orange County, and there were also a few sub-freezing lows in the Adirondacks.

Someone in N-NJ might've hit 100 degrees, legit, if the storms hadn't been hovering around. I couldn't buy much out of them - a few drops, some brief wind, and a rumble of thunder. They went all around me or fizzled out before reaching here.

Severe warned on the cell in NW Sussex County. It looks to be heading sort of in my direction but will probably miss west if it holds together. They called off the afternoon session of field day due to the heat which was definitely the right call. Temps are into the 90s in West Jersey.

Already into the upper 80s. Kids have field day today on a campus with no shade and not a cloud to be found. Misery. Glad I brought in the Tilly Hat and sunscreen. Also, an interesting temperature inversion with the overnight lows. Vernon and High Point had the warmest low temperatures in the whole state last night.

Wow, Walpack, NJ spread today is 38/90. I had 48/88. I've been noticing how quickly it warms about an hour after sunup. It's climbing 8-10 degrees per hour for two-three hours in the morning. The effect of the strong June sun makes that warming feel even more pronounced.

Wow, Harrisburg, Reading. Those low rainfall totals can't be good at all for the farming industry out that way. These temps along with the low humidity have been amazing. Too amazing. The best part is the diurnal swings. House gets a little hot during the afternoon, then open all windows and have the house chilly by morning. Rinse wash and repeat. Walpack NJ today low of 35 and high of 84. Up the road in Sandyston, NJ was 39/84. I had 42/81 on the dial here.

43/79 here in Sparta. Amazing day. 33/80 out at Walpack! Dry air feels great, and it's nice not having dew all over everything in the morning and evening. However, rainfall is badly needed again.

Looks like quite a sharp cut? Tough forecast. Wish I could sympathize with outdoor plans and kids games. But we really need the rain.

Lots of upper 20s in the usual cold spots in western, NJ. Lowest I found is 25 at Walpack. Rebounding nicely later.

I'm pulling for the rain this weekend. Hopefully we see something. We'll also be covering or taking in some plants tonight. Freeze watch up for my area. They're saying as low as 28, probably out in the Walpack area. From fires to freezes, and back again if we don't get some rain.

Walpack, NJ today recorded Min 32/Max 77. 32 was the state low. 77 tied three others for the state high. I had 39/77 here. Obviously, mine isn't official.

That was a rarity that year (2013), especially since all of the other Top lows ranked are much earlier in the 20th century, with the exception of 1992.

Wasn't there a Memorial Day Blizzard in the high peaks of the Adirondacks that year? Or was it another year more recently? I just remember being out one night that weekend and it was windy, overcast, raw, and in the mid-40s at best, living in Morris County at the time. Heat back on on the house, and very much unlike Memorial Day. Didn't do much that weekend except card and board games inside.

I've been watching the precip bust apart all day before reaching here. A few drizzles, but so far 0 in the rain gauge. Radar looks more impressive than is actually reaching the ground. Let's see if forecasts for tomorrow and beyond hold true. Otherwise just raw, windy, and overcast.

It was almost predictable that after hitting the 90s two weeks ago, we would settle back into a blah cool damp spring pattern for a time. Any chance we salvage part of Saturday before the rains begin?
