Kind of lacked 2015 in magnitude department, thouugh....as far as storm and peak deopth. Jan 8, 1996 was actually a bit less impressive to me than this past January 7...100% honest. I would rank it ahead.

This past January was just your average everyday minor snowfall out this way. You guys really cashed in, I think I had about 5 inches here iirc. And that's true I think the largest storm I had here in 96 was about 13 or 14 in. We just had many many free to 10 inch deals that just kept coming and coming. Honestly I prefer that to a winter with just a couple of blockbusters

I'll still stand by this notion unless the data proves me wrong.

Majority of our big winters (and big as in large departures from average on the positive side) occur because of 1-2+ large storms...not because we get 15 3-4'' events. I bet even in phenomenal winters, the number of events which produce widespread accumulations aren't significantly greater than usual.

True. It's very rare to get a 1995/96 style winter around here, or really anything close. That was my favorite winter so far in SNE since I've been following in the late 70s. Others have been close, but 95/96 we had snow OTG much of the time from November through late march. Never usually happens contrary to what many chirp on this forum

Yeah was doing it all day, now this morning had a light dusting and still pixie dust coming down, roads were snow covered, they had to salt. Even RT 2 had some snow on it until about RT 31.

Same down this way, roads are slick

Well that's good for you because mine is not lol. He actually can't stand the cold and snow at all. But he supports me anyway ( just think some crazy ).

He does prefer the warmer weather,  but has slowly morphed into following this time of year. Chasing tornadoes is how he ended up in the middle of the damn Springfield tornado, stuck on RT91 of all places right when it came over the Memorial bridge

The ground is so warm for this time of year that the snow melts from below and above..

Where are you located? Plenty of frost in this area! I have an open electrical trench on a job site because everything is frozen solid. Maybe I should let some of you know where it is... save you money on toasters

Yeah one thing that has been nice is I’ve had ground covered for most of the month since 1/7. We lost it after the second cutter but only for a few days prior to the 1/15 event. Then we lost it again last week but only had to wait about 3 days.

Same here. It hasn't been a lot, but there's been enough white ground to satisfy in this area

My front yard faces south and that is what happens unless it is very cold....meaning the snow begins to melt the next day after a snowstorm if it is sunny with normal temp..

Hate to tell you this, but that will happen January 10th if you have all sun... even if it's 10 degrees. Just doesn't happen quite as fast

Some of These people are just completely out of their gord.   Now we have people saying snow melts as quickly as it stops in mid February…WTF? Who the heck are these dummies?   And they have the nerve to say it happens in NNE too.  This place is a complete f’n dumpster fire.  Lots of utter worthless and untrue BS.

Snowflakes need their snowflake fix. They've gone from weenie to downright delusional

Yup. If winter has no signs of showing up by SB Sunday, it’s time for baseball and lawn prepping.

The Bug is already prepped for its first drive of the spring, and the '77 bus resto is well underway. It's healthy to have other hobbies to take your mind off crap patterns :D

You can recover from a bad Dec, but i would bet that if you looked at the winters that we got skunked in DEC, it’s a strong BN snow signal. The biggest reason is due to the fact that an average winter from Jan-Mar after a shitty Dec will result in below normal snow. I suspect that years with no Dec snow would correlate with below normal Jan snow as well, but I would need to analyze the data to know for sure. It makes sense intuitively, the culprit behind a pattern that is so putrid that it leads to 0 snow in Dec can often be blamed on a lack of cold air. Going from a horrible well AN temp pattern to a colder and snowier pattern is a process that takes time. It is not uncommon at all for extreme patterns (well AN or BN temps, extremely wet or dry patterns) seem to set in for 2+ months.

Why do some of you guys think we get prolific snow in December in SNE on average??? Why? It is NOT normal, especially where you are located. Some of THE best winters we've had over the past 40 plus years had very little if any until new years +- a few days. If the winter sucks for your area it generally has nothing to do with December. I try not to weenie people, but my God sometimes its deserved!

We had to rely upon Jan and Feb to make up for Dec loss. Guess what .. it failed . You need snow in Nov and Dec

It failed for some, sure. But it doesn't mean those other months HAVE to make up for them. It's not the way winter is usually work here. Plus it's been my experience getting snow too early in the season is a bad Omen for the rest of the year with the exception of years like say 95/96, and iirc 92/93

I’ve said it over and over .. you cannot lose the winter month of December and expect to make up for it in Jan and Feb. That’s the worst thought process and you see it over and over here. You have to have winter and snow in Dec. You have 3 winter months . Losing the first one makes it impossible

And I've said it over and over... more often than not for most of SNE we don't usually get much in December. If we do it's usually the last week or so. If we didn't have this c*ck blocked decent pattern this year it would likely be a different story
