I agree with both. And this isn't a big deal. I don't care much or lose sleep over this. But it's always struck me as bad form to have a map and be so sloppy with the edges. If your not going to put any effort into making PA or WV accurate then why not just zoom the map in and not have them at all? It's no big deal but I've never understood it. It also seems worse in the D.C. area. When I lived in the Philly, Scranton/Wilkes Barre or State College PA markets they didn't seem as bad. Their maps would only cover the area they were giving a legit forecast for. Often the map wouldn't even be a square and would simply include the counties in their viewing area and it was obvious they put effort into the whole area. Not sure why the D.C. and Baltimore outlets put out these huge area maps then only bother with the viewing area. Just seems silly but maybe I'm crazy!
It’s ugly to have a map that just ends as a block at the far reaches of your viewing area. Besides, it can make those areas appear to be unimportant (which they are...let’s be fair
) by being on the edges. If you expand the map to show areas outside the viewing area, by default you include in the heart of the map those at the edge of the viewing area.

I like JI but he has admitted he posts his melt downs in the serious discussion threads because he wants an audience. If we actually did set up a specific place for melt downs and nonsense and he keeps posting that in the serious threads then that probably deserves a warning then a short term suspension if he keeps it up.
Im not sure I actually want that. I like the jokes and banter that lighten the mood. I'm not trying to squash fun. But we have some people who don't know when to chill out. And we have a few legit crazies. And at times they can turn a good discussion into a complete mess. It's one thing to read a few funny posts then back on topic. But when a whole page becomes nothing but "where's my snow this sucks" it kills the serious discussion. And the worst part is that's exactly what some want. Avant/Vice thinks we should talk global warming 24/7 and wants to derail anything else because it's a distraction from his agenda. Some others have these melt downs where they decide the weather hates us and we are wasting our time and then they try to destroy the discussion because they think it's useless. It's childish behavior. I'm not talking about the funny banter between friends that goes on. But how do you get rid of one without the other?
I agree with you completely.

We should have a "no holds barred" anything goes discussion thread and let all the malcontents have at it. It might be entertaining and we could contain the crazy to one place.
But we all know that Ji would still do his best to sh*t all over the sane threads.

In-laws decided to ship their Big Green Egg up here from Hilton Head so that it would finally get some use. Pretty excited to get started with it...this weekend, maybe?

Random notes From a talk by Amy Butler of NOAA
Impacts of SSW extend to 60 days in the troposphere ... with the biggest impacts downstream of North American jet ... cold anomalies midlatitudes/Switzerland ... warm anomalies eastern Canada, sub-tropics
Downward coupling does not occur after all SSW ... and that SSW occur in context of other forcings such as ENSO, MJO Phase ..
SSW forecasts exceeding 15 days have no skill
Week 3/4 skill is much larger when models are initialized with a weak polar vortex.
Stronger more organized MJO when the 50 hPA QBP index is easterly
Totally agree with Amy.

People can claim that early snow in the general DC-Baltimore area doesn’t mean anything either way in terms of how winter will turn out, but I know I get jittery when it happens (or threatens to happen).

Classic Miller A. Maybe a good sign of things to come if you are into the whole atmospheric memory thing?
Yup.
I couldn’t care less about tracking wet flakes in October or most of November. It’s not worth it. What is worth it is seeing a pattern of coastals running into chilly air, because while it may or may not portend a similar atmospheric setup for when it really counts, I’d much rather have this than hope that a stable, crap-looking pattern flips in our favor.

BWI hit 32 on the intrahour. RIC fell short.
I'm pretty impressed. I always go with BWI and RIC on or around the same dates, and didn't think we'd get enough of a cool down to get BWI there just yet. Hopefully Richmond can hold off for a couple more weeks.
DCA...forget it.

I have no idea if establishment of a pattern is a thing, but let’s establish the pattern anyway.

i thought that wet late summers into fall helped with tree color? That dry was bad leading to leaf changing? Guess I know jack squat.

Predicting fall colors is snake oil.

Hit 35F at the closest PWS in Burke, which is 3° chiller than forecast. That's been happening the last few nights here. Frost on cars, as well.

I am not sure a "slightly below average" January would really feel like a pullback or even be void of snow. We are so used to torches in January a "normal" one might feel arctic.
Totally agreed. A January that comes in at or just below normal would absolutely yield chances assuming there’s moisture around.

We’ve had good posters leave for over moderation (Ian) and under moderation (Mitch).
I figured Ian eventually left because he became Billy Big Boots and decided to stick to Twatter and take in the adoring fans.

Ditto. I think that is a terrible idea. A WSW for 6-10 inches of snow is a completely different animal than 6-10 inches falling in 30-40 mph winds drifting 2-4 foot (or more) high.
Plus, what happens when you have snow on the ground and a windstorm blows thru? Issue a WSW for zero snow???
Good thing Sterling doesn’t have to worry about either of the last two scenarios happening.

Their Breakfast stout is a winner, and it definitely has notes of coffee. You wont go wrong with that one.
Another coffee stout with prominent coffee notes is Evolution Rise Up Stout. Its made using coffee from Rise Up Coffee Roasters in Easton.
Weyerbacher Sunday Morning Stout is very coffee-forward and generally available during the winter months. Besides...it’s got some barrel on it, which makes all stouts better. Sunday Molé is another really good one of theirs.

I don't think there's a better board out there. I still love this place but even I have to admit that things have seemed to be more crazy in the last year. The Michael thread is one thing, but winter is a whole different level. I kid you not I considered leaving last season because it was just unbearable.
I'm not sure what the answer is. Too much moderation and you don't get the fun and free flowing conversation that we enjoy. Not enough and every other post is
Bust
Congrats New England
Next
[something wholly inappropriate]
and that just becomes miserable after a while.
Honestly, we just need a big season up and down the coast. Just like winning cures locker room issues, snow cures wx board issues lol.
We've had an awful stretch. The last time I think the region had a good winter month was what, January 2016 or February 2015?
The atmosphere around social media (including forums) has deteriorated greatly in the last few years. I agree that a big winter would help things, but that would just be slapping on some (awesome) plaster on those cracks.
