2018/2019 Mountains and Foothills Fall/Winter Thread
SnoJoe replied to Tyler Penland's topic in Southeastern States
I guess they could, but they won't this far out. I just saw some posts on facebook saying "looks like we might dodge the bullet". I good amount of mountain folks won't think twice about a "1 to 8 inch" storm. Overhyping can be a bad thing, but so can under-hyping. But who knows, they might be right. Just went back and read a few pages of that storm in our thread and nobody got it right. They do try and are one of the best offices I've seen out there, so maybe they're on to something. Boyer just jumped on the warm wagon. He said more rain and sleet now. Said he was "lowering his expectations". -

And ice. From the WSW... WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation possible. Total snow and sleet accumulations of 1 to 8 inches are possible. Ice accumulations up to two tenths of an inch are also possible. The most I see on that map in WNC is .05 -

If GSP is expecting ice to cut into our snowfall accumulations, how was this map generated? -

Yeah. We always have to wait when systems come in from the south and southwest. Sometimes it seems like forever for it to start. But the SW mountains cut off before we do so I guess it works out in the end. I remember last Dec. storm, Rainforest had about three inches before I had my first flake. Me and you were getting pissed. We might get some snow but the idea of this being a "generational" event is ridiculous. But since I'm old enough to cover several generations I might be expecting too much. -

This is starting to look eerily similar to the Dec. 8 storm last year. I got about 10 from the low and another 2 from flow that night. Some of you guys to my SW got over a foot. I'll take that in a heartbeat. That was a nice storm. -

I hear you Mark. It's so hard to get real excited about a Saturday night storm on a Wednesday. Meet me here Friday evening around 9pm and we'll have a toast together if it still looks good. -

Didn't get the 5 inches I wanted but did end up with about 4.5. And had a high today of only 22.8. I want to say thanks to the folks that keep us updated here. I rarely venture outside of this thread mostly because I don't understand 90% of what they're talking about. Plus, the posts come so fast I can't keep up anyway. I know it's a pain sometimes to repeat yourselves for us but know that people like me appreciate it because it lets us enjoy our passion for weather too. -

Just had another amazing squall. Literally put down 3/4 of an inch in about 15 minutes to put me over 4. One more of those before it quits and I'll reach my 5. -

GSP extended the WWA until 6 pm now. Radar looks good for maybe another couple of inches. I'll take a 5-inch snow before the big dog this weekend. And it might not get above freezing here until it starts Sat. Gonna be a long 3 days. -

I've got a solid 2.5 to 3 inches here. Just had a rather intense squall a few minutes ago that laid down about a half inch. It's 19.2 here with a few flurries at the moment. -

This will be a nice little primer for the weekend. I know I'm biased, but there's nothing like Appalachian snow. I know you missed it. -

Nice flurries started a little while ago. Cold, cloudy day. Never got out of the twenties. After last week temps and the start of this one, I notice on a 4 wheeler ride today that the ground is starting to lock up. Some surface mud in the daytime but definitely cold underneath. Even the flurries tonight are sticking to everything. -

GSP seems to think it will only be all snow Sunday night. Leads me to believe we'll have temp issues here. We might be a little to far away from the CAD region. Anyhow, we'll see how it shakes out. Hope everyone sees something wintry. Looks like a nice little tease tonight before the bigger event this weekend. Saturday A chance of freezing rain before 10am, then a chance of rain between 10am and 3pm, then a chance of rain, snow, and sleet after 3pm. Cloudy, with a high near 37. Chance of precipitation is 50%. Saturday Night Rain, snow, and sleet likely before 7pm, then snow between 7pm and 2am, then snow and freezing rain after 2am. Low around 28. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Sunday Snow and sleet likely before 11am, then rain and sleet likely between 11am and 1pm, then rain and snow likely after 1pm. Cloudy, with a high near 35. Chance of precipitation is 70%. Sunday Night Snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 27. Chance of precipitation is 60%. Monday A chance of rain and snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 38. Chance of precipitation is 40%. -

Same here. Old timers say that if you get flurries on a Monday, you'll get a monster gulf low snow storm on Saturday. -

Nice win, but for the love of God, could someone just beat Alabama. Rainy, drizzly, dark, foggy, breezy, miserable day. Counteracted by friends. spirits, fire, food, football, fellowship. I won. -

Oh....and about 3 inches for this event and stayed well below freezing for over 48 hours. I'll take it in Nov. -

First single digits of the year, 9.2 degrees with wind chills way below zero. Not sure how much snow with the wind, maybe a couple of inches. -

Light to moderate snow now. Already picked up another half inch to go with the inch last night. I agree with Tyler, much better returns on radar than last night. This stuff is dandruff though, at least 20+/1 ratio. Just had a gust to 41 at 14.2 degrees, puts the chill around 10 below. Cold night ahead. -

Little over an inch here. Cold, 17.8 with a stiff breeze and still a flurry or two. Maybe another inch tonight. Then it looks to really warm up and back to rain. Pretty typical fall pattern in the mountains. -

She's teasing us man. A little ice here, a little dusting there. Depends on her mood this winter. If she'll just throw us a 6 to 8 by Christmas I'll be cool. -

I think Ray may be right on this one. Looks like there is very limited moisture to work with per radar. We'll have to squeeze out every drop to get an inch or two. -

Flurries here with a nice little shower 10 minutes ago. Really feels like our first blast of winter with a temp of 23.5 and a 16/G24 mph breeze. We'll see how it goes from here. -

I'm trying to get excieted but GSP gives me no accumulation and only a 20% chance. ..Little to no snow accumulation is expected attm, though near a half of an inch to an inch could not be ruled out at the higher elevations. High temperatures across the NC mountains will range from the upper 30s to mid to upper 40s. And Ray says a dusting to an inch. ...At best, you'll see a dusting of snow with, perhaps, an inch or so at the highest elevations near the state line. What are they missing?
