  1. Today will be the 700th consecutive day on which New York City's Central Park has seen less than 1" daily snowfall. A system could end the streak on Tuesday.

At this point, I kind of want it to go until next season just so that we break 1,000 and everyone loses their minds and the media goes HAM with the stories.

If CPK is going to be an UHI along with a poor pattern, we may as well be entertained.

  2. One of the things I’ve learned from backpacking is that the ground is the sneakiest enemy when it comes to staying warm. Cold hard compacted ground will just suck the heat from your body. Thats why it’s good to get a sleeping pad that has a really high r value to it. Anything that can create separation helps and corrugated cardboard, while really basic, can probably add a degree of r value insulation from concrete flooring.

Have you tried camping at hiltons

  3. NYC currently running +6.3 for the first 2 weeks of January. This is followed by colder temperatures this week. Then another warm up to close out January. So the month should finish solidly above normal.

  4. The ICON, RGEM and CMC are all too amped up IMO. The UKMET is a clear outlier. The NAM is total trash, not even worth looking it, it’s already trending towards the EURO/EPS. Nothing has changed in my view, still a 1-2 inch event area wide. The GFS probably comes a bit further west like the EURO the next 2 runs

Oh man, I was invested in the snowman/MJO good feelings tour, too.

  5. This was my commentary about streaming having exclusive rights I put it in the NFL thread in the Sports subforum

In the scheme of things the first round of playoffs (in any sport) is pretty meaningless unless it's a team you specifically root for.
The playoffs don't really hold any interest for me until we get to the conference finals.  (in any sport.)  I want to see them actually try to put the conference finals or superbowl itself on streaming only.
I am fine with streaming as long as it's not exclusive.  Why limit yourself to one format anyway? I thought the NFL was smart.  To maximize their ratings they should be on as many platforms as possible.

That’s fair. They’re a business and need to amplify their product as much as possible without making it difficult to obtain. I think *that’s* the issue at the moment: just another service you need to get the entertainment you want.

You can think of it like the weather, if it’s a hobby (not including our friends in here who do it to make a living): it used to be pay for cable for TWC and get a weather radio for Christmas (I did! Thanks, Radio Shack!), but now it’s that, plus pay for TWC app, tropical tidbits (I think), other subscription services… and for what?

It’s entertainment or a hobby or a way to pass the time, but the NFL is tightening the screws, and people are right to be annoyed.

    Thanks.

  6. Feet are always the worst.  Giants/Green Bay playoff game in GB , Jets/Steelers snowstorm changing to 33 and rain game and Islanders/Rangers at Yankee Stadium were the 3 most uncomfortably cold experiences of my life.

The cold hurts. It just hurts. I think that’s the toughest part of going to a cold game.

At least the heat can sometimes kick up a breeze that makes things semi-pleasant or you catch some shade.

I'm not sure why anyone would use AI to forecast the weather.

    1) AI is a glorified analog so it won't perform well for anomalous events.

    2) We don't know what's incorporated in AI models so we can't correct for known biases.

    3) Why use AI when we already have trusted NWP models?

AI can be used to improve the accuracy of NWP output that have a known, and predictable bias though. For example, improving wind speed: < https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10.1029/2018JD029590 >.
