  1. Yes, nothing annoys me more with winter than having a somewhat snowy winter without a big event as the centerpiece. It's why 2002-03 ranks so high for me, it had snow on Christmas, the big 26 inch PD2 in the middle of winter and a snowstorm to close out the season in April.
  2. That storm in February 1983 was my absolute favorite storm growing up, most of the rest of the 80s sucked for snowfall here. February 1983 is what introduced thundersnow into my lexicon lol.
  3. Yesterday and today are ideal, I wish we could have this instead of the rainy crap or the high humidity swampiness.
  4. it's just one day of clouds and showers though, as opposed to 3-4 days which we don't need or want
  5. it depends on how tropical season sets up
  6. Ray you must have done really well in 1993-94 too.
  7. January 2016 was like February 1983 on steroids. The added moisture with that storm was definitely CC induced, there was a research paper on it. 30.7 inches of snow with 3.00 inches of liquid equivalent at JFK
  8. So we have a few that good winters for both of us. I only listed what I consider A winters. A few of the other ones you listed were B+ here, among them 2004-05, 2008-09 and 2000-01. 2003-04 also fits into that group.
  9. Yes and it's not always about ENSO either. My favorite winters were a combo of different things. 1993-94 1995-96 2002-03 2009-10 2010-11 2013-14 2014-15 2017-18
  10. and the solar maximum (though it's really great for northern lights displays even in the south.)
  11. it reminds me of a movie-- Dante's Peak, I think?
  12. I'm just glad we are only going to get the typical scattered showers/thunderstorms and not any more of these evil closed off lows.
  13. Oh we saw it last year in October even from the city, you probably saw that one too, it was even at a decent time (around 7-7:30 pm), great sky conditions too since there was 0 rain in October last year and barely ever any clouds lol.
  14. and perhaps 1993-94 too which was severely cold and the models had huge problems with all the storms we had that year, underestimating the lingering cold.
  15. It reminded me of when I was in Barcelona, the same kind of heat. Or what we had in 2010 lol.
  16. did you see the northern lights from Lynbrook?
  17. Not very hot, but more like warm to very warm. Maybe 90 on Thursday the other days will be low to mid 80s.
  18. The interesting thing is, I see clear blue skies to my north and east and west and a yellowish haze to my south.
  19. If Dubai can air condition the sand on their beaches than we can artificially heat up our near coastal waters beginning in May. It would be a boon to the beach business.
  20. artificially heating up the oceans beginning in May is necessary.
  21. This is why I can't wait for SST to heat up to 70+
  22. to be fair, I think it's more likely to get such a departure from average in the summer if you have a renegade closed off low and onshore flow with rain. Average temperatures mute the extremes, so they don't really show us extreme highs or extreme lows. As an example July 1993 which had our most extensive and extreme heatwave of my adult lifetime (July 1977 had an even more extreme one but I was only 3 years old lol), had a day with a high of 66 and a low of 62 on the 2nd, because of a big rainstorm with onshore flow and high winds. A week later the historic heatwave started.
  23. Hold on a sec Chris. You know I'm 100% with you regarding climate change and how it has affected global weather patterns. But on the local scale it's not as clear cut as that. Specifically with regards to using old analogs do you remember when all the mild predictions came out for 2010-11 as late as the middle of December? Just because it was a strong la nina? And then when we had unrelenting cold and snow we started looking at old analogs from the 1910s to find strong la ninas that were as cold and snowy as 2010-11 was?
  24. I found something really interesting about JFK's heat record. JFK has hit 100+ 19 times (between 100-104) including two streaks of 3 days of 100+ JFK has also hit 99 19 times lol..... so 38 times of 99+
