111 between Dunlap and Soddy Daisy gets to about 2200 feet in elevation before the western drop into the Sequatchie Valley. The exit for Lewis Chapel Road has lots of parking and a couple good slopes, which are sorely missing up on Flat Top

This road is in my area of responsibility for snow removal for TDOT. It's the first place I check during events for road conditions. We actually put forward facing dash cams in the plow assigned to that route so we can monitor remotely since there are no traffic cameras up there. I'm concerned about this area, and eastern Polk and McMinn counties. Could be a tree snapper in those areas. Also Lookout Mountain, which is around 2200'.

How long has it been since we've had a system so strong its dynamics drove a change from rain to snow? I'm not talking about one of the "wave rides an arctic front" scenarios we've done pretty well with lately. I mean a big old bowling ball upper low rippin' fatties.

    10 or 20 years?

I'd love to chase some rate driven snow this weekend across the upper plateau.

January 2009. We were predicted for rain. Rain quickly changed to snow. MRX was so behind the curve on the event that they actually issued a winter storm warning for every county in the CWA except Hamilton county. Despite the fact that Hamilton county already had 3-5" on the ground and the roads.

I guess for me you can also count Feb 12 2014. We started as snow, got a couple of inches, changed to rain during the day, then changed back to snow and wound up with over 10". Downtown barely got anything with that one though.

What prevents the cold air from coming in East TN?

High pressure over the SE coast. We had the same thing happen in 2021 when Memphis and Nashville got hammered with 2 weeks of subfreezing temps and snow/ice. It was 66 in Chattanooga during parts of that event and 14 in Memphis. This isn't quite that extreme, but there is basically zero chance of any icing in the eastern TN valley from this.

This is more worrisome to me than any of the snow. When MRX talks about historic, this is what they are referring to imo. Yeah it gets below zero plenty times in the past several years, but that's with snow pack and radiational cooling on light winds. Not so common to go below zero plus 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50.

If it happens, this will be the first time KCHA has been below zero in my lifetime. I am 34.

We really need some rain. We have fescue and our yard is the best it's looked in the 6 years we've been here. With that said, one side of our yard heading to the back sits in the sun 90% of the day. It's starting to struggle as it usually does in the heat. My front and other side is still lush, thick and green. I'm almost to the point of just keeping the good area green year round and basically trying to keep the sun baked side alive but not worrying about trying to keep it as nice as the front. emoji53.png

Mine is just about to go dormant. I cut it Monday of this week, and there has been zero growth since then.
