That TYS gust though! Incredible. Great share.
I would be willing to bet that set a new record. That's a very high gust for an ASOS.

mPING snow reports are popping up from Signal and Lookout mountains this morning. It’s likely above freezing even up there though. 40 degrees at 1000’ elevation in Apison.

111 between Dunlap and Soddy Daisy gets to about 2200 feet in elevation before the western drop into the Sequatchie Valley. The exit for Lewis Chapel Road has lots of parking and a couple good slopes, which are sorely missing up on Flat Top
This road is in my area of responsibility for snow removal for TDOT. It's the first place I check during events for road conditions. We actually put forward facing dash cams in the plow assigned to that route so we can monitor remotely since there are no traffic cameras up there. I'm concerned about this area, and eastern Polk and McMinn counties. Could be a tree snapper in those areas. Also Lookout Mountain, which is around 2200'.

How long has it been since we've had a system so strong its dynamics drove a change from rain to snow? I'm not talking about one of the "wave rides an arctic front" scenarios we've done pretty well with lately. I mean a big old bowling ball upper low rippin' fatties.
10 or 20 years?
I'd love to chase some rate driven snow this weekend across the upper plateau.
January 2009. We were predicted for rain. Rain quickly changed to snow. MRX was so behind the curve on the event that they actually issued a winter storm warning for every county in the CWA except Hamilton county. Despite the fact that Hamilton county already had 3-5" on the ground and the roads.
I guess for me you can also count Feb 12 2014. We started as snow, got a couple of inches, changed to rain during the day, then changed back to snow and wound up with over 10". Downtown barely got anything with that one though.

All this warm weather has me considering a somewhat early application of pre-emergent on the yard. I just know if I do it, we will wind up with a bitterly cold March.

What prevents the cold air from coming in East TN?
High pressure over the SE coast. We had the same thing happen in 2021 when Memphis and Nashville got hammered with 2 weeks of subfreezing temps and snow/ice. It was 66 in Chattanooga during parts of that event and 14 in Memphis. This isn't quite that extreme, but there is basically zero chance of any icing in the eastern TN valley from this.

Winds have been underwhelming thus far in the valley. We had far worse with the storm last week.

I saw a single flake of dandruff this morning while walking the dogs. Guess I can't complain too much about that given how stark this winter has been so far.

I drove over the Skyway from Robbinsville to Tellico Plains yesterday. Easily a foot of accumulation above 5000'. I couldn't get into any of the pulloffs without getting stuck, but the highway was clear. We descended to around 4300' and got to play in 6-8" of snow at that elevation.

Just had a long hot tub session in the snow. I’m renting a cabin in Ellijay, GA this weekend. Wish I had sprung for Gatlinburg instead, but this is still nice. Solid dusting here.

Low of 6 high of 10 here. That’s the lowest daytime high temp I recall in my lifetime here. The CAA was apparent and strong. When the winds died down the temp would creep up towards 10, and when it picked back up it would drop back down to 7-8.

A few flurries here. Down to 33.
-
Down 10 degrees in the last 20 minutes but not below freezing yet.
-
After holding at exactly 44.1 all day, we are creeping up to 45 as the front gets closer. I can hear the SW wind now.

Hey, you staying up for the frontal passage?
I am! I have relocated this winter to Apison east of town at a higher elevation (around 1000’). Interested to see how cold we get. I do not expect any meaningful snow. I think what does manage to fall will get blown away.

The clown maps are showing exactly what always transpires down here in anafrontal situations, just to a more extreme extent. I’m not even confident of getting any rain here. Maybe just a few light showers then we freeze to death.

Speaking of historical cold, when was the last time all of TN had a wind chill warning?
This is for sure the first one in Chattanooga. We’ve had a watch before (I think in 2014).

This is more worrisome to me than any of the snow. When MRX talks about historic, this is what they are referring to imo. Yeah it gets below zero plenty times in the past several years, but that's with snow pack and radiational cooling on light winds. Not so common to go below zero plus 20-30 mph with gusts up to 50.
If it happens, this will be the first time KCHA has been below zero in my lifetime. I am 34.

Amazing how quickly we went from dry creeks and cow ponds to flooding. 6.65" of rain in the last 7 days and looks like 2-3" more in the next 4 days.

Getting an excellent slow rain for my new sod today. Nice way to start August.

I've had one good rainstorm all summer. One. It was last Thursday morning. I have zero confidence in any significant rain over the next week. Looks like the majority will be focused on I-40. I'm destroying my wallet watering new sod.

We really need some rain. We have fescue and our yard is the best it's looked in the 6 years we've been here. With that said, one side of our yard heading to the back sits in the sun 90% of the day. It's starting to struggle as it usually does in the heat. My front and other side is still lush, thick and green. I'm almost to the point of just keeping the good area green year round and basically trying to keep the sun baked side alive but not worrying about trying to keep it as nice as the front.

Mine is just about to go dormant. I cut it Monday of this week, and there has been zero growth since then.

Incredible. It hasn’t rained in nearly a month here. I had enough wind to knock out my power and strip some siding off my neighbors house, but zero rainfall.

Lots of ill-timed thunder last night while I was supposed to be resting up for an important licensing exam this AM. That was really great.

Hit 30 last night here but zero frost due to the wind. I'm thinking 26-27 tonight. Typical TN spring. Just enough awesome weather to get used to it, then the cold comes back again.
