As a kid back in the day, there was something to be said for waking up to a surprise 7" of "partly cloudy" on the driveway the next morning. Magical. Nowdays kids can't even get a snow day break with remote learning, even though most snowstorms are of the perpetually fake 1 week out variety sponsored by our pal the GFS.

Yup. Of course, nothing could go wrong forecasting snow totals for DCA using the GFS and betting money on that, right? -

I'm curious when they'll initialize the new contract for February. Should be some fireworks there. -

The Kalshi prediciton market model says no big snow before end of month. DCA is the respresentative obs station, so good luck to all of the betting folks with that. -

I don't have to look at weather models online anymore. I just read this thread and I'm fully informed. -
For those of us still locked up because of unplowed streets, fortunately Uber Toilet Paper delivery is on the job!

Grocery stores are quiet around here because nobody can get out of their unplowed neighborhoods to get to them, lmao. VDOT, where art thou? -

January 24-26: Miracle or Mirage OBS Thread!

We've been overdue for a while, so it finally caught up with us. I'll believe the weekend storm when I shovel it, hahaha. At least by that time I'll be in shoveling shape! Seriously, this area has to thread the atmoshperic needle perfectly to get one of the gynormous storms. That's why we only get them on average once every 7 to 10 years. Usually it's 34F and 2" of rain. 2009-10 was my personal holy grail, as I had always hoped to have 2 big storms in one season. I got that and more. Dec 2009 was really interesting because I developed shingles just before that big storm hit, and I had to literally hike my way through thigh-deep drifts to get to the local CVS to fill the prescription. Little did I know what awaited us 6 weeks later. Fun times. -

I hear that. It got to the point where I quit shoveling and was just picking up huge blocks of concrete glacier and shot-putting them over to the lawn. Felt like I was trying to qualify for the world's strongest man competition. Definitely will pay for that tomorrow. I'm on a cul-de-sac (Gainesville) and there have been no plows on our road. Standard cars don't have the ground clearance to get through this mess. Might have to wait until April for it to melt first. -

Amen. Using a spade here to jackhammer from the top, then get underneath to lever up the ice blocks, some of which are 3" thick. There's powder underneath, so the regular snow shovel does come in handy for that. A broom takes care of the remaining pixie dust layer to ensure that anyone walking on it doesn't compress leftovers to ice. Amazingly, the asphalt and concrete surfaces are totally dry underneath all of this stuff! Definitely a multiday project for us geezers, lol. -

With progged wind gusts to 30 mph most of the day tomorrow, there's a non-zero chance of losing power. Would've been a lot more dicey with larger ZR accretions from this storm, but certain areas around here lose power when someone sneezes. -

Speaking of Feb 2nd, I have it on good authority that Punxsutawney Phil will predict six more weeks of glaciers!
