  1. Hard to believe I was cross-country skiing on Sunday and Monday in truly arctic conditions - temps in single digits, wind chills well below zero, and a thick blanket of white powder. Now a little over a day later we have rain and temps in the 40's. Such is climo in upstate NY. Close the shades today and let's hope winter reemerges in a strong way later tomorrow.
  2. Looks like the frigid last 24-36 hours added quite a bit of ice to Lake Erie, as you would expect... https://iceboom.nypa.gov/ This webcam on Long Point was all open water yesterday, totally iced in today! https://stephen6605.wixsite.com/corkepoint/live-stream I think any lake effect the rest of this winter off Erie will be battling ice cover...
  3. I actually like what I'm seeing over the next couple weeks. Yeah, a bit of rain this week sucks, but it's pretty brief warm up, less than 24 hours really. Potential lake effect event end of this week into the weekend, with potential for a pretty vigorous northern stream system to bring another round of general snow across upstate. After that....I'm willing to take some chances with brief warm ups ahead of storms to keep the pattern active.
  4. Anyone have any ice cover sat images for Lake Erie? The one I use isn't available due to g'vt shutdown. Based on these webcams, it looks like the western basin is completely frozen: https://www.shoresandislands.com/webcams/ https://www.earthcam.com/usa/ohio/cleveland/?cam=pierw BUT....this one from Long Point shows wide open water: https://stephen6605.wixsite.com/corkepoint/live-stream About what I would expect at this point. Western basin mostly frozen, eastern basin mostly open.
  5. Yeah, bummer. That said, only looks like a brief hiccup in an overall great pattern for the foreseeable future. Should be a bunch of chances for synoptic and lake effect fun down the road.
  6. Great storm, nothing epic but hard to get much better snow totals throughout all of upstate NY. Nice to see everyone cash in from BUF to ALB and all points in between.
  7. 8-10” OTG here. Looks like I’ve been on the west edge of a band for a few hours, so probably higher amounts will come in just east of me. Light snow currently falling, big flakes though.
  8. Solid total already, good to see the little screw zone that's been plaguing West Seneca for a while get busted. Primed now for a big lake effect event...
  9. After tracking this thing for 7 days and looking at what seems like 1,000 model runs, I refuse to go to bed when the good stuff finally moves in. Just sayin...
  10. Yeah, good call on the Cleveland radar. Very impressive down that way right now. Much better flake size in just the last 10 minutes here too as the BUF radar is starting to light up now.
  11. Cold air is really pressing in big time from the north: ITY SKY/WX TMP DP RH WIND PRES REMARKS WATERTOWN SNOW -3 -7 82 NE21 30.04F VSB 1/2 WCI -26 FORT DRUM NOT AVBL OGDENSBURG LGT SNOW -6 -11 77 NE16G22 30.13F WCI -28 MASSENA LGT SNOW -5 -9 83 NE15 30.21F VSB 1 WCI -26 SARANAC LAKE LGT SNOW -2 -7 79 E8 29.97F WCI -17 PLATTSBURGH LGT SNOW -7 -12 79 N8 30.24F WCI -23 $$
  12. At 5.5” here, rate is solid but as others have noted flake size is still small. 1/2”/hour stuff at most.
  13. Snow picked up a tic here last half hour. 3” down for the day so far.
  14. Nice steady light snow here all morning. First inch in the books.
  15. Uh, no. Kind of like The Day After Tomorrow decides to visit upstate NY fer real...
  16. I know we have to get through this event...but what in the world is going on with Euro op run from hour 144-240? I don't know whether to be amazed at what it's showing or afraid...
  17. Dude, you’re on fire tonight. Please stop so I don’t wake up my wife with my laughing out loud in bed.
  18. Well look on the bright side, it all washes away next week anyway when a nice rainer rolls through mid week
  19. BUF - 6” ROC - 8” SYR - 8” Bummer after multiple runs of region wide 12”+ amounts. Usual lesson for synoptic, at least in WNY, to always assume 6” ceiling until inside 24 hours.
  20. Darn government shutdown. Tried to check out Great Lakes sat imagery and ice analysis pages, but sites are down. Curious how much ice is starting to form on Erie with several sub 20 deg nights in the books now. After middle of next week, looks like lake effect conditions could really get cranking if PV sets up shop south of James Bay. Need to squeeze one or two events off Erie before freeze up.
  21. Most important set of 0Z runs tonight since chicken wings were invented at the Anchor Bar. Upstate grazer leaving a barren arctic landscape behind with 2 inches of snow blown into miniature piles, or juicy powder punch depositing a thick white blanket for all...
  22. One other quick thing I noticed perusing the 12Z runs so far. The lake effect potential through at least the next 7 days looks pretty tame. Not what I was expecting with the cold dropping in. But on the flip side the synoptic stays active, so that's a good trade-off. Maybe too many highs and lows ripping through during this period to allow the lake effect machine to kick in.
