at least by the 1990s, the heat index was definitely something communicated pretty routinely in local news etc, at least in these parts. Not sure what you mean by "preferred narrative" aside from stating obvious facts about now versus in the past.

95 at 10pm at DCA lol. I assume the wind will switch and some point and it will go to like 88/79 but still.

we got close to 120 - lots of trees here plus somewhat close to the Potomac. I believe it.

we went to the pool for a bit (Katie Ledecky's childhood pool actually) - water temp had to have been 90+. Wasn't really refreshing lol.

At my PWS it was 101/78 about an hour ago for a heat index of 118F. Now it's 102.6/75.2 for a heat index of 117.3

the 110-115 heat index numbers on back to back days is insane. I don't remember this combo of 100+ and 70-75 dewpoints anytime recently. The July 2024 extreme heat had dews in the 60s.

big surprise that the 80+F lows are official in DC, Philly, and NYC. Heat index of 99F at DCA at 1am - lovely.

DCA flipped to a west wind and is back to 90F.

out on the tarmac at EWR it's still 93F lol. The river wind "cooled" it down a bit at DCA, but Philly and NYC are still 90+ at this hour.

In a very perverse way, this is like the summer version of an I-95 snowstorm that hit everyone from us to New England - of course you can't really "enjoy" it because it feels like death outside, but everyone got to experience the extreme-ness.
