My wife just informed me that apparently a train has become stuck in a snow drift south of DeKalb.
A TRAIN.

Four days of steady north wind with 10" of sugar means I have 6' tall drifts to deal with tomorrow when the wind dies down.

we hit on these next couple, even modestly, and we're pushing top tier depths for our climo
Out here in corn country, I judge snow cover by how much corn stubble is still visible. In 25 years, I can't recall it being this deep for this long, ever. There is barely a corn stalk visible in any field.

Deep frost depth plus above average snowcover will be nasty once we get that first 40 degree Rainer

After traversing this lengthy period of very cold temps and things start to warm back up I think the feeling by most (especially the public) is that we really turned the page on deep winter. Could be the first hint at spring fever for many if we suddenly get a few days in the 40s for example, after such a long period of cold. Days are getting longer.
I'm definitely enjoying these deep winter conditions; the deep snowpack, arctic temps, frequent snow events, etc. I'll def enjoy whatever else ma nature throws at us going forward, but after this long stretch of deep winter I'll definitely start to think more and more about spring, and severe convective events, outside BBQs and the like.
As long as it's in the 50's or 60's for Spring Break, I'm cool.

peeks of average to above average temps finally arriving around 2/17-2/19. Guessing people will be getting tired of the cold by then
I'm already tired of it, and it hasn't arrived yet.

That's one hell of a driveway.
'bout a third the length of mine.
(I haven't even bothered to blow yet because too much wind still today.)

I don’t want to question your MIL’s observation accuracy...
No need to...but I do. LOL

Absolutely pounding in sycamore atm
Funny...my MIL in Syc says she's had hardly any.
Still lots of sleet and FZR mixed in down my way. Fine grains not big flakes.
-
Unpopular opinion...I'm thinkin' north of 88/west of 355 is gonna bust low.

Pouring sleet just south of you in DKB
RN just south of you outside of town.

Lots of drifting on N-S roads already due to wind picking up in DKB.

<RANT>
Why do all of the online national and regional radar options suck balls? I just want to put radar on a full screen monitor in my office and watch today' progression in motion.
wunderground.com: Stops updating after about 5 minutes
weather.gov: Doesn't seem to work at all
weather.cod.edu: No full screen mode, doesn't seem to depict precip type.

I prefer night storms. No melting, no traffic. I’m going to walk down the middle of State Street on Saturday night at 11pm and there will be no one.
I remember when you could walk down the middle of State Street on a Saturday afternoon in June and you only had to worry about busses.

The times they are a changin'. My sons school district doesn't have a snow day today - they have an unscheduled e-learning day instead.
