2010 is now NYC's 3rd snowiest calendar year all-time.

What's amazing is that it was essentially two months, Feb and Dec. Jan only had 2.1" and there was no snow in any other month.

The top 5:

1896: 64.0"

1996: 61.3"

2010: 59.0"

1947: 58.9"

1948: 58.9"

It's also the first calendar year to have two 20"+ storms.

The central park 20.0 ASOS number is a little suspect, but that's what we have right now.

Suspect low or high?

I think low, but it's better than the 1am measurement of 13+. I think they ended up using ASOS because the regular measurement wasn't cutting it.

I'm averaging the local measurements around here due to what I view as some pretty good variation between reports... My "guess" is the park was probably around 21 or 22... but it's really just a guess.

The midnight report was 12.0, 1am was 13.0....the record statements says 7.8 fell today, so to me that should be 19.8....so it seems to me they're 0.2 too high.

Perhaps, I'm confused here (very possible), but I was under the assumption based on comments that the measurement reports were from different sources. The 1 am was from the zoo keeper, while the now estimate is from the ASOS. That's what I thought Yehuda was saying. I may be wrong here. Either way, measuring was very difficult.

theyre always low-- as are the airports-- in windy storms like this. Someone at NYC also has a rep of rounding numbers to x.0, it happened quite often last year ;)

Judging from reports, probably near the East River.

Sheepshead Bay Brooklyn got 25" and a trained weather spotter in East Rockaway reported 23.5" SW Nassau had between 19-24 inches as noted from multiple reports. Basically the further south you were, the better you did.

Hey SG I wanted to ask you something. The other day you mentioned the area which generally gets the best snow bands and thundersnow being from about the Jersey Coast to EWR to NYC. Is there a reason why that happens? I always thought it was pretty random, as I can remember many storms when JFK beat NYC in snowfall (due to megabanding). Here is a short list

Feb 1961 JFK 24.1 NYC 16.0

Feb 1969 JFK 24.0 JFK 15.5

Feb 1983 JFK 22.0 NYC 17.7

Feb 2003 JFK 25.6 NYC 19.8
