Clouds - 2022

Recommended Posts

Time to fire up a new thread for the New Year. Thanks for all the views in 2021. And as usual will be deleting 2020 and 2021 as I go along to make room for the new images.

Tonight the clouds were on the horizon so I went out into the county and farmland to get a clear view. Some nice color even if it was quite a distance away.

Start off looking northwest as the red was creeping into the area. Taken with 24-70mm at 70mm.

Some faint but broad crepuscular rays from some over-the-horizon clouds. Taken with the 24-70mm at 35mm...

Today as stuck between the bowling ball to the southeast and a clipper wave to the northwest. as hoping for some decent Sun-cloud interaction as the Sun set into the clipper cirrus.

Unfortunately, there were no sun dogs nor iridescence as the Sun met the clouds. Taken with the 100mm...

Close to max color dynamics as the Sun was about to sink into the stratus exiting the cirrus. Taken with the 24-70mm at 70mm...

Once again there were some thickening clouds in the southwest close to sunset.

Started off in front of the firehouse. Taken with the 24-70mm at 53mm...

Trouble with being this far from Lake Michigan is that when the flow is just right, I am going to get gunked.

I could see some clearing to the east northeast but that hardly does much good towards sunset. Taken with the 24-70mm at 24mm...

Looking southwest the sky had that bruise color. Taken with the 24-70mm at 31mm...

Last night I missed a perfect sunset. Actually, right as I walked out of the door at work the western sky was at max red and it was glorious. By the time I warmed up the car and pulled out of the lot the color as gone. So I had to deal with something a little more pedestrian tonight. There as some cirrus creeping in from the west as the sun set.

Some weak sundogs as the Sun sank into the cirrus. Taken with the 24-70mm at 35mm...

Best color and dynamics as the Sun disappeared into the thickening cloud cover. Taken with 24-70mm at 35mm...

Some of the color was better also. The golden minute was nice. Taken with the 100mm...

Probably going to over-share here. Was a great evening out at the firehouse. Had some cirrus transit the area in just the right place and just the right time.

Some white cirrus and the snow in front of and behind the firehouse when I got out there. Taken with the 24-70mm at 27mm...

Just going to head straight to the color, as that is the reason for me being out there. Just before the Sun set as you can see the Sun through the pines on the horizon. Taken with the 24-70mm at 59mm...

The next two images are for contrast and compare. They are taken one and a half minutes apart. Other than some minor cropping they are the same image. But one is a straight lens and the other I used the GND and some feathering of it.

The first image is the straight lens. It is as the red was creeping into the area and I am looking due south. Taken with the 24-70mm at 28mm...

7V2A9872.thumb.JPG.4d6bb3c0cb99488a1de5061fe201f997.JPG

The next image is using the GND to even up the balance and it makes the colors pop a little bit more. I like this one better even though some people think it looks fake. Taken with the 24-70mm at 28mm again...

7V2A9884.thumb.JPG.47ee031d57dc73ae56d0bb4876489fb4.JPG

Last image of the night is the mega red as it was fading off in the distance. Taken with the 24-70mm at 700mm...

Got lucky this evening. ALl day was socked in with stratus but around 5:00p.m. the stratus rolled east and gave me something of a sunset.

First image is right close to sunset. But what I like best about it is the contrail remnant at the top. The striations and ripples in it just made my night. Taken with the 24-70mm at 50mm...

Had to move out to the farmland in the county to be able to see all the way to the horizon where the clouds were.

Had no idea what to expect with the sunset tonight. Could have been a flop or could have been decent. I as out there shivering, just in case.

Some nice white over head when I got out there. Taken with the 24-70mm at 24mm...

With this image, I was taken by what I thought was a contrail shadow. When I downloaded it, I saw that what I thought as the shadow was on the sun-side of the contrail. That can not happen. The passage of the jet must have cleared a lane in the clouds and gave me an extreme blue lane. for this to happen. Taken with the 24-70mm at 35mm...

Another nice but chilly night at the firehouse.

When I got there the conditions were ripe for iridescence or sun dogs but neither happened. Funny how that works sometimes. Taken with the 24-70mm at 41mm...

A first for the season. Was able to take a sunset image after work. Only had time after driving home, of grabbing the camera and walking a block over to the other side of the bank. But at least I was able to document what the sky looked like.

Nothing special as a sucker hole opened up at the right time. Taken with the 16-35mm at 21mm...

Just one image from the sunset this evening. The edge of the upper low was just to my west. I had hoped for a bunch of red post sunset. Had a little red just not the mega amount I was hoping for. But there was a very noticeable red sun pillar.

Finally, that pesky upper low moved east of me around sunset. About time.

Looking northwest as the Sun was getting fairly low in the sky. I did use the GND to balance out the light a little bit. Taken with the 24-70mm at 24mm...

The red flash surprised me. I had packed up and as in the process of leaving when it snuck up on me. I had to get all my stuff back out in a hurry. Taken with the 100mm...

An extremely busy day behind the viewfinder.

Started off when I forgot to turn off the alarm before going to bed yesterday. Woke up all bummed out that I had to head back to work till I remembered it was Sunday and I did not have to go in to work. Seeing how I was up I went and took images of the sunrise instead. Taken with the 100mm as the Sun was just climbing above the eastern horizon...

Now going to transition over to the sunset. There was a couple layers of cirrus so I thought it might get interesting. I did walk back to the pond because I knew I needed to get to as much of the horizon as possible. Seeing how the new business does not like me being behind their building and I know they have cameras back there, I wonder if I will receive another visit from the law enforcement officers in the near future. Time will tell. This is what it looked like just before the Sun dipped below the horizon. Taken with the 24-70mm at 41mm...

These were all taken yesterday the 19th. I took so many images that I was falling asleep just trying to get them all sorted last night. Had to wait until tonight to process everything.
