WASHINGTON — The Trump administration is close to recommending that all Americans wear cloth masks if they go out in public, a change in position that reflects new concerns that the coronavirus is being spread by infected people who have no symptoms and new data suggesting the United States is not yet slowing the rate of infections. At a White House briefing Thursday evening, both President Trump and Vice President Pence said that new guidance on masks would be issued by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the coming days. But the comments of both Mr. Trump and a top official on the administration’s coronavirus response task force during the session suggested that the issue hasn’t been entirely resolved within the administration. “If people want to wear them, they can,” President Trump said, declaring that while the administration was “coming out with regulations” on mask wearing soon, whether to follow them was a personal choice. During the same briefing, Dr. Birx suggested that despite all the harsh measures such as stay-at-home orders and business closures, the U.S. is not yet flattening the spike in new infections. We’re only as strong is every community, every county, every state, every American following the guidelines to a tee,” she said. “And I can tell by the curve, and as it is today that not every American is following it. And so this is really a call to action.” Her caveats on masks reflect what has been a common view among many public health bodies about the effectiveness of masks for the general public. Until now, the C.D.C., like the World Health Organization, has advised that ordinary people don’t need to wear masks unless they are sick and coughing. Part of the reason has been to preserve medical-grade masks, including N95 respirator masks, for health care workers who desperately need them at a time when they are in continuously short supply. Still, as the coronavirus devastates the United States, the C.D.C. has been drafting new guidelines recommending that everyone wear face coverings in public settings, like pharmacies and grocery stores, to avoid unwittingly spreading the virus, according to a federal official. -

N95 mask are hard to come by but the KN95 are not.. CDC says they offer the same protection but it's not FDA approved..It's the"Chinese" version of the N95 which is funny because those are made in China to lol -

If everyone wore a mask or face covering this virus would dwindle down much quicker, it seems that could be in the cards, at least recommended.. 80% is better than 0% and these aren't even the good mask... Granted we have a shortage of the n95.. Scientists are not completely sure of all the ways that the Covid-19 virus is transmitted, but in a randomized control trial, participants who were told to use a surgical mask, and did so, were 80 percent less likely to contract respiratory illness. -

The KN95 mask is a Chinese alternative to the scarce N95 mask, but the FDA refuses to allow it into the country. As hospitals around the country desperately seek N95 respirator masks to protect health care workers treating COVID-19 patients, the federal government has blocked imports of what might be the world’s most abundant alternative. That mask is designed to filter out at least 95% of particles that are 0.3 microns or larger in size — the same measure used for the scarce N95 mask. Like the N95, it fits closely around the nose and mouth, creating a seal that decreases the risk of infection. And the Centers for Disease Control has said it’s as effective as N95, which is certified under US testing standards. But this second type of mask, called the KN95, complies with slightly different norms and is made in factories that have not been certified by the US government. By law, masks, along with most medical devices, can’t be imported or sold in the United States without the Food and Drug Administration’s say-so. Last week, to ease the national shortfall of protective gear, the FDA issued an emergency authorization for non-N95 respirators that had been certified by five foreign countries as well as the European Union. It conspicuously left the KN95 masks out of the emergency authorization. The omission was all the more startling because in late February the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that KN95 masks were one of numerous “suitable alternatives” to N95 masks “when supplies are short.” The FDA did not respond to multiple requests for comment. A significant majority of all respirator masks, including both the N95 and KN95, are manufactured in China. During the height of that country’s outbreak, China restricted exports of virtually all respirator masks, keeping them for domestic use. As that country’s infection numbers have slowed it has eased those restrictions, but now the US must compete with dozens of other countries desperate to acquire masks. Allowing the importation and use of KN95 could help to greatly alleviate the scarcity. “The KN95 masks are far more readily available,” said Bob Tilton, who owns a New Jersey–based cosmetics packaging importer and earlier this month decided to use his familiarity with Chinese supply chains to bring in masks and other personal protective equipment to sell to hospitals. “The N95s are much harder to grab.” Yet without the FDA’s seal of approval, importers are hesitant to order KN95 masks because they worry they’ll get held up at customs. Many hospitals are refusing to accept them, even as free donations, because they fear legal liability should a health care worker get ill while using a nonpermitted device. Under ordinary circumstances, N95 masks — which are certified by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health — are abundant, available at hardware stores and pharmacies for around $1 apiece and for as little as 35 cents apiece wholesale. But in just two months, the coronavirus pandemic has depleted the world’s supply, creating a gray market that has driven prices for a single mask as high as $12 or more. That, in turn, has opened the door to unscrupulous actors running internet scams that take payment for N95 masks they never deliver, and to others selling counterfeit or mislabeled N95 masks, which could put health care workers at serious risk of infection. Meanwhile, masks made under the newly permitted US standards — Australia, Brazil, Japan, Korea, Mexico, and the EU — are not made in as great quantities as the N95 or KN95, according to industry experts. -

I still have 3 weeks left in this claim and then I have to reapply to get the 13 week extension, who knows how long that will take lol More extensions may be needed depending on the job market and unemployment rate.. It's hard to find work if no one is hiring lol I tried to email unemployment and ask about the work search requirements, it's nearly impossible to find work right now locally.. The only place being tops which I would have no problem with under normal circumstances. -

The science behind the new Rutgers test is based on a laboratory technique that makes millions of copies of the COVID-19 nucleic acid from a single sample. Typical hospital labs can run 20 to 30 samples a day, said Brooks. The new technology can potentially process tens of thousands of samples a day, and do it quickly. “It’s highly automated,” he said. But beyond the automation, the genetic testing of saliva samples will make a huge difference in how many people can be checked for viral infection because far more samples can be collected. Tests now being performed in New Jersey as well as across the country involve the use of a nasal or throat swab to obtain a sample used to determine whether someone is infected, with results available to providers within three days. Judith Lightfoot, chief of infectious disease at Rowan University, said if it holds up to be effective, the Rutgers test represented another avenue to take pressure off the state’s overall testing program, as well the Abbott test, which she said can also handle large number of tests, and will greatly cut down on how much time it takes to get results. The approval of saliva testing would allow health officials to expand screening of the population far beyond what is now possible, without the need of a medical provider to take the sample — by simply having someone spit into a tube. That will allow testing of anyone — even those who are asymptomatic — without the current concern for scarce collection supplies that has now essentially limited most testing in the state to those who doctors already suspect are infected with the virus. -

In what could represent a major advance in the fight against coronavirus, a Rutgers University research lab says it has developed a new test using existing automated technology able to analyze tens of thousands of patient samples each day to detect COVID-19. -

A record 6.6 million Americans applied for unemployment benefits last week as the new coronavirus struck the U.S. economy and sent a recently booming labor market into free fall. The large number of claims was double the 3.3 million who sought benefits two weeks ago as the U.S. shut down parts of the economy in an effort to contain the virus. Jobless claims, a proxy for layoffs, provide temporary financial assistance for workers who lose their jobs. -

Just astonishing how much people are paying for masks on eBay, $300+ for 10 disposal masks and they have many bids..I'm not sure $300 is worth 10 days of peace of mind lol I was forced to go with the"enemy" and order some mask from China (Ali Express), takes a couple weeks to get here but you can get 10 packs for less than$10... I seen a graph yesterday that showed cotton "handkerchiefs" only stop 28% of particles, while surgical mask 80% and N95 95%-99% respectively... -

Bad dental hygiene helping the cause? Lol But in all seriousness it's much more sparsely populated once outside of Fulton, Oswego.. It seems many people are taking it seriously, tops had lines down the isles due to social distancing, almost everyone was wearing gloves and some sort of face mask.. I'm a bit surprised Fulton only has 1 case so far considering they have 10k people in a 4sq mile city... Fulton mayor seems to be in control keeping most parks and other recreational places closed.. You guys can keep all the cases down there Be safe.. -

TAMPA, Fla. - As COVID-19 cases continue to climb, a growing list of governors are ordering their residents to stay inside and away from others. At least 30 states now have some form of a stay-at-home order in place, yet here in Florida, Governor Ron DeSantis continues to resist calls to follow suit statewide. There is growing pressure for him to take stronger action. So here’s the thing, I don’t have an enforcement arm here, it’s gotta be done by the locals anyway,” said DeSantis. His approach to slowing the impact of COVID-19 here in the sunshine state is to leave it up to each jurisdiction. “Our guidance is no groups of 10 or more, follow what the CDC says,” DeSantis says. “I think that’s the best way to be safe, and I think if people do that they’re good.” According to the Centers for Disease Control, Florida ranks sixth in the nation for the number of confirmed coronavirus cases. DeSantis says South Florida is the state’s hotspot, and Monday he did issue a safer-at-home executive order for four counties. “Right now it’s a matter of life or death, we need to have a consistent plan here in the state of Florida,” Representative Kathy Castor said. Castor is one of 13 members of Congress who sent a second letter to the governor, urging him to issue a statewide order immediately. Saying in part, “This pandemic has not respected global borders so it certainly will not respect county borders.” “I think that means that we have to be as aggressive as possible in flattening the curve and encouraging folks to stay home,” said Castor. Many policymakers, and even the White House, are now using models coming out of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, an independent research center at the University of Washington. The data shows Florida’s peak could come on May 3, with the potential for thousands to lose their lives. But to keep the curve as low as projected, travel needs to be severely limited, non-essential services closed, and the entire state locked down. Florida has done none of those. “There’s not really any more you can do in Southeast Florida, you just gotta kinda stay the course at this point,” DeSantis said. “Some of the other areas, you know it’s just a different situation, were a big diverse state.” A change.org petition to lock down the state started circulating last week. The author writing “…our family are in risk, please shut down Florida.” As of Tuesday evening, it had nearly 400,000 signatures. “I think no matter what you do, you’re gonna have a class of folks who just are gonna do whatever the hell they want to,” said DeSantis. FOX 13 News reached out to Senators Rick Scott and Marco Rubio to see where they stand on a statewide stay-at-home order. So far, we have not heard back about their positions. -

It's comical that Trump is trying to take credit for the governor's high approval rating (87%) in handling the coronavirus outbreak
