Upstate NY Banter and General Discussion..

The reason the government did this was to add up to the"average" American check.. Avg American worker makes something like$938 a week, average unemployment is something like$380 a week so by adding the$600 you get $980 a week.. Obviously not everyone makes nearly$1k a week... -

My situation is a little different because I was laid off (no fault of my own) before this outbreak started but it's now preventing me from finding work...I had 2 job interviews cancelled because of this and only 1 new job has opened up on indeed over the last 3 weeks.(within 25miles) Now im waiting on a letter to re-certify another 13 weeks as unemployment is up to 39weeks.. I'm worried what's to come after? I have no idea how the job market will respond, unemployment may have no choice but to continue handing out extensions until the unemployment rate drops... -

You can practically quite for any reason and claim it was due to the coronavirus.. Usually on unemployment you need a real good excuse to quit or you don't get it.. -

Giving everybody$600 extra a week was probably a mistake, no one wants to work anymore lol The hourly managers at RAC are pissed because the regular employees are getting paid more to sit home Some of the managers have thought about quitting.. -

To me it's understandable lol If I worked at a grocery store making min wage and had a chance to sit home and collect 3x the amount without the chance of getting sick, hard to pass that up..lol Unemployment didn't do anyone favors by allowing people to quit and still collect (pua).. -

Unemployment only gives you extensions when the unemployment rate is high, which means not much work out there lol Not easy for everyone to find a job especially when you have 20 applicants for every 1 job opening.. -

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) — The Great New York State Fair is a little more than four months away and its director is optimistic about the fair not being canceled. This optimism is based on the models from the state, according to the director. And now, if the fair does happen, it will officially be 18 days long. State lawmakers approved the necessary money in this year’s budget to extend the fair. Right now, almost all fair employees are working from home to get ready for what will be the longest state fair New York has ever seen. Waffner told NewsChannel 9 that, at the moment, there are no plans to use the Fairgrounds for help with the COVID-19 outbreak. The American Red Cross is holding blood drives at the Expo Center on Thursdays and Fridays. -

A domestic cat in Belgium has been infected with COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus that's spreading across the globe, the government's FPS Public Health, Food Chain Safety and Environment announced March 27, according to news reports. This is the first human-to-cat transmission of the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2). About a week after its owner got sick with COVID-19, after returning from a trip to Northern Italy, the cat developed coronavirus symptoms: diarrhea, vomiting and respiratory issues, Steven Van Gucht, virologist and federal spokesperson for the coronavirus epidemic in Belgium, told Live Science. The owner sent samples of vomit and feces to Dr. Daniel Desmecht's lab at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Liège. Genetic tests showed high levels of SARS-CoV-2 in those samples, he said. "The cat recovered after 9 days," Van Gucht said. -

Cats can be infected with the coronavirus that causes COVID-19 and spread it to other cats, but dogs are not really susceptible to the infection, according to researchers in China. The team, at Harbin Veterinary Research Institute in China, also concludes that chickens, pigs, and ducks are not likely to catch the virus. Scientists say the findings are interesting, but that cat-owners should not be alarmed just yet. The results are based on lab experiments in which a small number of animals were deliberately infected with high doses of the virus, SARS-CoV-2, and do not represent real-life interactions between people and their pets, says virologist Linda Saif at The Ohio State University in Columbus. There is no direct evidence that the infected cats secreted enough coronavirus to infect people, she says. The team, led by virologist Bu Zhigao, infected five domestic cats with SARS-CoV-2 through the nose. When two of the cats were euthanized six days later, the researchers found viral RNA, as well as infectious virus particles, in their upper respiratory tracts. The other three infected cats were put in cages next to three uninfected felines. The team later detected viral RNA in one of the non-infected cats, which suggests that they contracted the virus from the infected cats through respiratory droplets. All four cats also produced antibodies against SARS-CoV-2. Surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 in cats should be considered as part of efforts to eliminate COVID-19 in humans, the authors note in the preprint, which has not been peer reviewed. NO SYMPTOMS But Saif says that none of the infected cats showed symptoms of illness, and that only one out of the three felines exposed to infected animals caught the virus. “This suggests the virus may not be highly transmissible in cats,” she says. Furthermore, the mode of transmission is unclear because the study does not describe how how the cages were set up, and the uninfected cats could have contracted the virus from contaminated faeces or urine. -

We are all in the battle here and the battle is stopping the spread of the virus,” he said. The number of hospitalizations was increasing at a slower rate, as well: The number of patients currently hospitalized in New York increased by only 7 percent since Friday, the smallest increase in at least two weeks. From March 22 to 28, for instance, the number of people hospitalized was rising by an average of 27 percent per day. -

Updated today, some positive news.. The target of bringing down the reproductive number (R0) to 1 has been reached. Now the goal is to bring it below 1. This value represents the average number of people to which a single infected person will transmit the virus. An epidemic with a reproductive number below 1 will gradually disappear [source] [source -

How contagious is the Wuhan Coronavirus? (Ro) The attack rate or transmissibility (how rapidly the disease spreads) of a virus is indicated by its reproductive number (Ro, pronounced R-nought or r-zero), which represents the average number of people to which a single infected person will transmit the virus. WHO's estimated (on Jan. 23) Ro to be between 1.4 and 2.5. [13] Other studies have estimated a Ro between 3.6 and 4.0, and between 2.24 to 3.58. [23]. Preliminary studies had estimated Ro to be between 1.5 and 3.5. [5][6][7] An outbreak with a reproductive number of below 1 will gradually disappear. For comparison, the Ro for the common flu is 1.3 and for SARS it was 2.0. -

On Friday, the F.D.A. issued an emergency use authorization for KN95 masks. Regulated by the Chinese government, they are almost identical in performance to N95 masks. There are slight differences in their specifications, like a variation in the maximum pressure the masks must be able to withstand as a person inhales and exhales. The C.D.C. lists KN95 masks as a suitable alternative when N95s are not available. -
