  1. Both the Montague and Binghamton NWS radars are down this morning. Other than local radar central New York has to depend on the radar out of Buffalo which isn’t very accurate in our area.
  2. My sister has a friend who lives in Fort Collins, CO. As of a few days ago the fires were about 40 miles from her. She said the smoke is very noticeable in the air.
  3. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/10/13/coronavirus-first-case-of-covid-19-reinfection-confirmed-in-the-us.html?__source=facebook|main&fbclid=IwAR1J5Q-8qnypio31mem4oitloBzKpOePPqErzcu9BZ04J1AWua2vxJ_7V3U
  4. So let’s use the 0.8% mortality rate. The population of the US is around 330,000,000. To achieve herd immunity a minimum of 60% (probably more like 70%) of the population needs to be infected. That’s around 200 million people. If 0.8% of those die that’s 1.6 million deaths. Insanity! You really think that’s acceptable? Edit:. This is really directed at Luke_Mages who thinks herd immunity is the answer.
  5. It’s the coldest morning so far this fall season. I’m down to 29 here this morning.
  6. Can you please provide your data that support a 0.26% mortality rate? Right now there have been roughly 216,000 deaths out of 8 million cases. That is a mortality rate of 2.7%.
  7. You left off January 1977. Is that because it wasn’t pure lake effect or because it was before your time?
  8. The low was 30 here and there was frost on the ground. KSYR recorded a low of 34 which ties the record low set in 1943.
  9. I closed all the windows in the house last night and managed to keep the temperature at 64 when I got up this morning. The outside temperature fell to 37 here. I’m with you it’s way too early to turn on the heat. The sky is very milky this morning with smoke from the wildfires at high altitudes. My wife went for a walk this morning and said she could smell smoke but I told her with her nose she probably was smelling the smoke in California, lol. Time to go rake the forests!
  10. I’ve seen a couple of trees with a few leaves that are changing around here. Is that enough to qualify as “just changing”?
  11. It definitely feels and looks like fall this morning. Mid 50s with a low overcast and a pretty stiff breeze. I left several windows open last night and woke up to an inside temperature of 62 downstairs. Needless to say I’ve closed the downstairs windows but it’s not warming up very fast.
  12. Check out the webcams from Red Lodge Mountain just outside of Billings, MT. Looks like they have 3-4 inches of snow and it’s still falling! https://www.redlodgemountain.com/webcam/
  13. 65 and raining right now. Definitely feels like fall.
  14. How close is it to the nuke plant? My niece is a real estate agent and she’s been selling houses like crazy in one day above list price.
  15. If only it was 4 months later... It’s absolutely pouring here right now.
  16. I’m not that far from you and I measured 0.58 inch since 7 AM and .06 overnight. Skies have cleared in the last half hour and it turned into a nice evening.
  17. Syracuse has tied it‘s record long streak of days with highs 80 or above at 43. It looks like there shouldn’t be a problem breaking it over the next couple of days.
  18. It’s 37 degrees in Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska this morning. This is with the sun above the horizon for 24 hours. It will finally dip below the horizon next week.
  19. The summit of Whiteface is roughly at the 850 mb level. 850 temperatures at the end of next week look to be 10-12 C so low 50s F.
  20. Cuomo just announced that any colleges that play sports this fall will do so without fans in the stands. https://www.syracuse.com/coronavirus/2020/07/no-fans-allowed-for-college-sports-in-ny-this-fall-cuomo-says.html
  21. I measured 1.29 inches this morning. I’m pushing 6 inches over the last week and a half.
  22. I’ve been in my house for 25 years and when there’s a normal amount of rain the sump pump runs continuously. I’ve had probably 5 or 6 floods in my basement, most were not caused by pump failure but by defective switches in the float. After the last flood 3 years ago that left 4-5 inches of water we decided enough was enough and installed a backup pump that runs off of our municipal water supply. The only time we had to use it is when our primary pump failed and it took almost a day to replace. The backup did a good job keeping our basement dry.
