  1. Re the backend topic - that was great info - thanks a lot!  It's funny what you say about your memory of these events, because the blizzard of '83 is what started it for me in grade school.  Prior to that blizzard, I recall only the big events that I'm old enough to remember:  pretty much the blizzard of 78 and April 1982.  My snow memory post-Feb '83 is great up to and including Dec. 30, 2000.  After that it's pretty much all a blur, I think because it's been mostly a relative embarrassment of riches since then.

Definitely related to the embarrassment of riches, but I'm also older.  My earliest memories of snowstorms go back th the late 60s.

The Blizzard of 78 was the seminal weather event of my life.

  2. Posting here because I didn't want to step on posts from the mets.  Regarding your coping mechanism reply, that was great, but there are a few other denial-based mechanisms which helps take the edge off.  Pretend you're happy for other areas which are getting snow, or pretend that you don't like certain kinds of frozen precipitation.  Examples:

"I'm happy for inland area xyz.  They've been shortchanged a bunch this year."

"Atlantic City, enjoy your snow - you guys deserve it."

"Looks like the freezing rain is going to change over to plain rain.  That's ok, I've always hated ice."

  3. "If you live anywhere 30 miles or more NW, N or NE of NYC I’m not sure why you would expect March to be anything but another winter month which is what it is the far majority of the time. I guess some people on the coastal plain view it differently, but I’ve lived here most of my life and have never counted on extended warmer weather until late April the earliest. "

For those of us on the coast we usually get the worst of both worlds in March and into April.  Sure we'll get some snow, a decent amount in some years, but to get anything that sticks around for more than a day is a rarity.  At the same time when N&W get some of those nice early spring fever days with temps into the upper 60s, we'll have the ocean breeze / backdoor cold fronts / whatever it's called that keep us in  the damp upper 40s here, which seems to nag us through Memorial day now and then.

I like the snow as much as anyone, but once we're past about the time the clocks more forward, I'm ready for spring.  On that note, to folks like myself who have been around awhile and remember daylight savings starting in early and even late April, seeing snow falling  with the sun setting around 7PM is bizarre.

    Ok, ramble over..

  4. Hi thanks for the response.  Your point re thunderstorms is exactly right.  Naturally there's more interest in snow given the usually longer term impact when it falls, but that doesn't make it any easier to pinpoint.  Anyhow, looking forward to the next potential this coming weekend.   Thanks again.
