  1. the night of the January 19th 1978 storm Kasper was hedging towards a bigger storm saying the rain snow line has moved south...He said NYC could get 8"...I rember Alan Kasper making appearance's on the Uncle Floyd show in the late 70's...They called him Alan Kaster oil...
  2. that was the one predicted to turn to rain after 3"...it finally did after 13"...
  3. the storm was predicted to be one of the biggest storms ever a few days out...noaa said so on their weather radio back then...
  4. we would be basking in 60 degree heat on this date not knowing a major blizzard was a week away...the first half of January 1961 was benign...Sunday the 15th was 50 degrees early in the day...light rain started in the morning and temperatures dropped during the day...the rain changed to sleet in the early afternoon and mixed with snow in the evening...it snowed until eight the next morning...2-3" across the area accumulated...it was in the 40's for two days before an arctic front passed and stalled to our south...a major blizzard with a foot of snow in Brooklyn started just after noon on the 19th...it ended just after noon on the 20th...temps were in the teens with high winds...the temperature did not get above 29 for 16 consecutive days in a row... snow cover melted very slowly and there were two days in a row of clipper snow and another coastal that dropped 4" the next week...the end of January had 9" of snow on the ground...February comes in with near record cold...-2 on the second...there were rumors of storms that week and it was supposed to be on Thursday...it came on Friday the 3rd and ended on the 4th...there was accumulating snow from 6pm to 5pm on the 4th...the temp rose to 34 just after the snow ended stopping the record 16 straight days from 17 straight days with a max freezing or lower...there was 28" on the ground in Brooklyn after 21" fell as snow and sleet...after that storm winter was on its way out with a big thaw and storms after that were to warm for snow on the coast...
  5. 1993-94 had over 300 hours with frozen precipitation falling...1919-20 almost as much...1995-96 had just under 300 hours with some kind of frozen precip...I have to check other years like 1947-48 to see which year had the most...
  6. nothing beats the winter of 1960-61 especially the period from Jan. 15th to February 12th...
  7. December 1959 had a snowstorm on 12/21-22 with a positive ao/nao and neg pna...the January 1964 blizzard was a long duration storm about 30 hours long...February 64 had another one near 30 hours...
  8. I got around 5" of slush with that storm...Lost power for hours and my gazebo was flattened... https://www.nycsubway.org/perl/show?129631
  9. I still like 1959 for enso, qbo and the ao forecast going into November...The ao was very negative in November 1959 and there was a major cold shot after mid month... Oct 1959 compared to 2019 and Nov 1959...
  10. I heard flurries was the forecast in 47...great bust... 1947... http://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/52878037/ http://bklyn.newspapers.com/image/52878066/
  11. I remember all the busts good or bad...1989 had a bad bust in February and one in December...
  12. that was Jan 19-20th, 1978...only Alan kasper was worried we would get a big hit on his late night show...from Jan. 9th-Feb 7th 1978 there were six major storms that brought rain or snow or both...that was a bad month for letter carriers...
  13. the morning of the March 3rd 1960 storm had a forecast for snow changing to rain on the morning TV news...I was walking on 11th Ave and 63rd St at about 8am with light snow falling...it was 27 degrees and snow was starting to drift near the curb...I said to myself how could this snow change to rain...it could have easy if a coastal that developed near Virginia and bombed out didn't...the weather bureau missed that one...That evening while listing to WMGM on the radio the disc jockey ( Scott Muni ) said 'hey kids...no school tomorrow'...
  14. the December 11-12th 1960 storm is still one of my favorites...16.6" in Bensonhurst...21" at Newark...15.2" in Central Park...record cold followed...then the two disasters spoiled it...it was great to be 11 years old during March 1960 to Feb. 1961 ...four cold windy snowstorms and hurricane Donna...
  15. one of my first weather memories was hearing the wind howling thru the alley way of my house...it was situated almost ne/sw so the ne wind had a funneling effect...it had to be from 1954 when I was five...
