meh...my first winter on this earth was the 1949-50 winter...I was almost seven years old in March 56 when NYC had its first foot or more snowstorm since Dec. 1948... the 1940's had a few very good snowfalls in December... it seems that NYC's biggest December snowstorms come in cycles... 1945.....8" on the 19-20th... 1947...26" on the 26-27th... 1948...16" on the 19-20th... three in 4 years... 1957...12" on the 3-4th...at Newark... 1959...13" on the 21-22nd... 1960...15" on the 11-12th... 1961...10" on the 23-24th...at Newark...6" NYC... 1963.....6" on the 23-24th... 1966.....7" on the 24-25th... 1969.....6" on the 25-27th... seven in 13 years... 1990.....7" on the 27-28th 1995.....8" on the 19-20th two in 5 years... 2000...12" on the 30th... 2002.....6" on the 5th... 2003...14" on the 5-6th... 2009...11" on the 19-20th... 2010...20" on the 26-27th... five in 11 years...

the story I grew up with was my mother got stuck on the west end line in Brooklyn and had to lk a long way home...she fell in the snow and some people helped her or who knows what would have happened...she was six months pregnant at the time...

I was born in March 1949 so I was in my mothers stomach and don't remember anything...

the winter of 1949-50 to March 1956 was the worst snow drought in NYC weather history...

in recent years NYC has been getting above average snowfall despite a positive nao on average... some winter forecasts last year were spectacular failures...the pessimism for next winter is high...to me the enso forecast looks like 2005 and 1995...1959 if la nina doesn't develop...I'm just talking oni numbers and not a winter forecast weatherwise...all three of those years had a major snowstorm in the northeast...I can see a fast start to winter but a long mild period before the next good pattern sets in...its three more months before reality hits us good or bad...

sports are not the same with no fans in attendance...add in politics and its unwatchable...

before 1982 April snowstorms were of the wet variety...it was snowing hard mid day with temperatures in the mid 20's...the next day with bright sunshine the max temp in NY was only 30 degrees...21 years later there was the 4-7" of snow in 2003...15 years later 4-7" fell in 2018...since 2011 NYC has seen three early season snowfalls...October 2011...3-6" in the city...early November 2012...4-7"...Nov 2018 with 4-7" also...I think 2018 holds the record for the least amount of days between 5" snowfalls in a year...early April to mid Nov...1938 is a close second but has the record for the least amount of days between 6" snowfalls in a year...

on this date in 1958 NYC got 8-10" of wind swept snow around the area...temperature dropped to 3 degrees a day later...I was in the third grade at the time and remember what I was doing before and after the storm...

1963-64 is similar to 1995-96...both had a good December and a white Christmas...a Jan blizzard...a snowy February...more snows in March...2010-11 and 1960-61 shut off early...1947-48 can be put in the same category with them but had a comeback after a big Feb. its funny that 1966 had similar storms in January and then December...both were KU storms and both times the low was very close to us and we got dry slotted...the December storm did have hours of sleet which was a downer...it did changed back to snow once the low got north of us...
