They have to get crews and equipment on scene first. Then figure out how to free the ship without screwing other things up. Then clear the channel. Things will get going faster, for sure.

From my understanding is they already have the equipment on the way. They cannot get to the submerged vehicles until they start the clean up. Just too much debris on top of them. Sounds like they are going to try and get one way traffic in the channel before they try moving the ship. I think they are going to work hard on the channel and they worry about the rest of the bridge.

I saw a rough timeline posted somewhere yesterday, from what I remember:

    - short term goal is to clear the channel enough for one-way traffic in 3-6 weeks.

    - Two-way traffic coming a month or more past that once they've pulled the ship back to port

    - ~6 months for full cleanup of the bridge structure

You would think they could get the channel cleared for one way traffic quicker than that... I mean they should be working 24 hours a day on it.

The plan to clear the channel -

Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commander and chief of engineers, explained the team will approach the mission in three steps. Here's what they are:

    • Step 1: Get the steel trust out of a 700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep channel, and examine what parts of the concrete are still at the bottom. "Any piece of concrete, any piece of steel on the bottom is just as much as of a hazard as that in the channel," Spellmon said. This step will allow "one-way traffic going in and out of the Port of Baltimore again," he said.
    • Step 2: Work closely with the Coast Guard to stabilize containers on top of the ship. Then the trust of the bridge that is still on top of the ship needs to be taken off "so it can be tugged to a safe part of the port," Spellmon said. "By removing the vessel, that will allow us to reopen two-way traffic."
    • Step 3: Take out the remaining 2,900 feet of steel and all the associated concrete and roadway that's at the river bottom.

"We're up to this task. We have what we need," Spellmon said.

I wonder how long it will take them to clear the channel.

  4. Watching the video was insane... could you imagine being one of the last cars to make it over the bridge.  It looks like mostly construction vehicles on the bridge as it falls in the river.

I wonder if they will build another bridge or make it a tunnel.

I'm planning to drive to Erie, PA for eclipse. I remember driving to Clemson, SC for the last totality event and holy moly was traffic crazy the day of so I'm ready for it this time. I'm expecting major arteries to be extremely busy. This one'll be my third but hopefully won't be clouded over like my first eclipse.

I am going to try Springville NY... I have family up in State College that I might stay at on Sunday night. Weather depending.

This map will let you click anywhere and the little popup will tell you exactly how long totality will last in your location:

I'm taking my family to Texas for the same reason as many others...seemed like the best chance for sunny weather. We should be looking at about 3.5 minutes of totality in our location which will be a lot of fun.

I was in upstate SC for the 2017 eclipse and traffic afterwards was a nightmare. I learned my lesson though and booked a spot right in the path this time, so no travel the day of will be required. Can't wait

    I like this one better

Gonna be another nice one before rainy Saturday.  I like the 6-10 day with way above avg temps.  Hope we stay above avg thru April then normal May and below avg June

Hopefully the models are honing in on a later start and it happens in the evening.  My son gets to play a scrimmage on the turf fields behind the Ironbirds Stadium.
