  1. My final storm total just outside of Richmond is 16". Looking through spotter reports it seems that most in the metro area received 14-18". This certainly makes up for our near misses back in Dec. 2009 and Feb. 2010. What an event to remember for all of VA and MD!
  2. Nice photos Jamie. Check out mine here: http://www.americanwx.com/bb/index.php/topic/47708-photos-thread-for-jan-22-24-blizzard/?p=3926618
  3. In their most recent AFD AKQ confirmed that KRIC met blizzard criteria during this event. Pretty cool stuff.

  6. If the airport finds a way to mess this up yet again I can guarantee you that Wakefield will be hearing from an army of weather weenies, including myself. It is totally unacceptable for a government agency to continually hire contractors that are unable to perform their job. Every time I've discussed this issue with someone at the office they have sounded totally disinterested. That is disconcerting to me, as historical weather data, including snowfall totals, matter in more ways than any of us can imagine.

  11. Love that all of MD/VA is getting in on this now. Totals range from 13-15" down here around the RIC metro with more to come. Total whiteout conditions with yellow bands puking snow left and right. Airport might break it's long streak.

  17. Yeah, I'm shaking my head too over the fact that Richmond has had a quantifiable decline in the frequency of large SE-connected events and large events in general while DC has had an uptick in recent times.
  18. It's undeniable though that the frequency of large events in Richmond is way down. Just ask RIC Airport - he has all the data to back it up. Whether that is due to a decrease in frequency of the types of events that perform well here ("Miller C") or some of the other things I mentioned I am not sure.
  19. Sadly I think the days of Richmond cashing in (12-16+) on big coastals is over. It's my opinion that AGW is having a very real effect on the snow climate here which trickles down to things such as SST's etc. We'll have to do our work primarily with bowling balls or SE systems from this point forward.
  20. It's more than bad luck at this point. When you have a textbook 992 low sitting over Hatteras and an epic warm nose with only 6-7" of snow and crud to show for it there is something very wrong. I can't help but think that AGW is playing a role and SST's seemed to be a factor here. Don't want to rain on this parade though. Lived in the DC metro for many years and I hope you guys enjoy this one. I at least got my 7" and Jebwalk in today.
  21. Just to put things in perspective. We have a 992 slp over Hatteras tracking ENE in late January. Textbook for central VA. The result is sleet up to CHO and a massive dryslot.

  23. Models still like us for some back end action tomorrow but I'm not holding my breath. I only need a few inches to put me near 10 though.
  24. 9:35am - snowfall begins 10:35am - 0.5" 11:35am - 1.3" 12:35pm - 2.5" 1:35pm - 3.0" 2:35pm - 3.3" 3:35pm - 4.0" cleared 5:00pm - 5.5" 5:30pm - cleared due to sleet 7:20pm - 5.7" 8:20pm - 5.8" 11:55pm - 6.5" cleared
  25. Just for some perspective. The 18z GFS gave me about 5" of snow by 7pm (I'm just over that amount). Over the next 6 hours I am "supposed" to receive another 2-3". By the end of tomorrow I'm modeled to have 20". Euro is very similar.
