There’s a wind driven rain here now. Turning the streets into an even bigger mess. Northbound traffic is still stalled on Riverside and Broadway. Many side streets blocked by cars that couldn’t make it up the hill.

A few years ago I had to go through the Bronx on a night like this and after almost 90 minutes of getting trapped behind stuck vehicles I gave up and drove up the sidewalk for 2 blocks to get past a mess, had to use the sidewalks two more times before I finally got out to the BRP. When I hit that first hill at the golf course I had to use the shoulder and grass to go around all of the cars stuck in the middle of the road. The hill on the Sprain going up to 287 was a slalom course. Subaru FTW!

  2. Usually I'm all excited to go out and shovel and be out in the storm while it's doing its thing, not so much tonight. It's just plain old ugly out there, it's windy and sleeting and just well, yuck. I must be getting old

About an hour ago 3 cars came down the street within a minute of each other, it had been over an hour before that and now it's been another hour with no activity. I'm guessing the roads are a real mess. Julian be careful going through this area...

Solar keeps looking better and better.

I wish my property was right for solar power. The house and ground faces generally east and all of the south and west sides are lined with 60-75 foot trees on the neighbors sides so at prime time I get very little sun once the trees are leafed out. I could pull a few hours early in the day but I don't think that would be enough to justify the cost.

This is why you dont mow too short before winter. Shove the ruler down and measure to the tops of the snow sticking on the longest blades of grass. 4” minimum here tomorrow.

I didn't get a chance to mow once the leaves started coming down and the grass was already a few inches at that point. I'm looking at 6" at least :snowing:

There will be a burst of blinding snowfall rates early tomorrow evening at the nose of the WAA, but it's gonna be cruising through at break-neck speeds, then we sleet for a brief time before the dryslot moves in around midnight and graces us with drizzle for the rest of the night. We probably have 3 to 4 hours in which to amass most of our snow, at least at the front-end - it's a toss-up as to whether the band pivots back through after sunup with anything substantial. Call it 2-5" with preference for the low end?

What are you thinking for start time? I'm going to be east of you in CT around lunchtime then have to head down to Newtown and Danbury mid afternoon.

Hey that seems pretty rare, I wonder how often that happens...

It's been mood flakes on and off here all morning.

From about the Dover/Pawling line north it's more common than further south at this point in the season, along the Taconic spine that line seems to be somewhere around Rt 55. It's like the high country in that area gobbles up the last of it and it transitions to more of a coastal influence until things get truly cold and continental air overwhelms and the offshore waters cool down to the low 40's then the line moves down into north central Westchester/Fairfield counties from about Mt Kisco across to Wilton.

During the November 15-16 period, another significant precipitation event, with general amounts of 0.50"-1.50" is likely in the Middle Atlantic and southern New England regions. It is possible that by the end of the storm, both Baltimore and Reading will establish new record annual precipitation figures.

Below is a table with year-to-date, 2018's rank among the wettest years, and rankings for various precipitation amounts for select cities.

    Rain11142018-MA.jpg

This storm will likely bring a portion of the region its first measurable snowfall of the season. It remains plausible that both New York City and Boston could pick up a measurable snowfall. Interior sections running from northeastern Pennsylvania to central Massachusetts could pick up a solid 3"-6" snow with locally higher amounts.

A while back I looked at 2 local WU stations and did a quick tally and by mid September both were well over 50". It's kind of surprising that BDR and POU are both hovering near there now but I know there were lots of times where it was pouring here and they got skunked. I'll have to go back and add up the totals from 9/10 to now and see how far past 60" my area is now. I can tell you that it's so soggy in the woods it's tough to leave the more heavily traveled areas without sinking in a couple of inches.

  8. Every now and then when the timing is just right those streamers will cause a flash freeze around here but usually it's just showery and squally.

So what are we thinking for Thursday/Friday? An inch of sleet topped with 2-4" snow sounds about right to me. Even if it's just a coating of sleet we are going to need something for the snow to stick to because the ground is still really warm. I'll hope for no or very little rain as we're already so soggy and that would just add more heat to the surface before the frozen precip.

I was an “ I will get it done when it stops” kind of guy. I would tell my beautiful late wife that if it was up to her I would be waiting outside, with the shovel ready, to catch the first snowflake. Now that I’ve lost her and the house is my responsibility, I understand what my love was talking about. It took almost 45 years to get it right but some of us are slow learners. Now, when the occasion arises, I will be out several times enjoying the shoveling, the snowfall and, of course, remembering her.

Oh man I'm so sorry  :(  We're all too young here to be having to go through something like that.  Lean on us if you need to...

  10. I have a shovel collection, there's always one with the right blade shape to move what I need to move or break up. It keeps me young and humble too  It also gives me the chance to spend more time outside in the snow when it's falling because I like to get it out of the way before there's too much at any given time. Most importantly I can shape and stack my banks to be the biggest on the block :snowing:

Most of us are in the middle of a sneaky snowy streak, 30" or more of seasonal snowfall for 5 straight years.  Whats the record for that?  Islip has actually had 30" or more of seasonal snowfall now for 6 straight years.  The only one not streaking is BDR because I guess they didn't do so well in the historic Jan 2016 blizzard.  If it wasn't for that, they would have had  6 straight years of 30"+ seasonal snowfall too.

You didn't have to go too far from BDR to get over that 30" number for 15/16. The CT coast missed a few nickel and dime events that got those of us in the interior to a pretty reasonable total that winter.

Hunting season up there now.  Many trails off limits.

Like here, there are enough spots that are no hunting that it's not really a problem. I was in Rutland and their big mt bike park, Pine Hill, is a no hunting spot and the lot was full. They'll also be grooming in there for fat biking this winter with the new SnowDog they just got. What I think is a bigger issue is that state lands close to mt bikes for the winter season so that's a significant limiting factor because it lasts for months rather than just weeks. FYI, if you haven't been to Pine Hill it's worth a trip. It connects Rutland to the towns west and northwest with trails and old carriage roads. It's a big, growing network worthy of a full day of riding. Just south of there in Poultney is the new Slate Valley Trails, two of the segments are open to hunting but one is not. That network has been laid out and built by one of the old guard of VT trailbuilding and it's coming along really nicely. These two spots make western VT a real destination worthy of a weekend trip.

Annoyingly windy. A birch just got blown over and landed in the boughs of an adjacent spruce, which is the only thing standing between the birch and roof of my carriage house. Should be fun to deal with.

Let me know when you've got that birch cut out, I can use some of that wood for a new project I'm working on. I need pieces up to 4 or even 5 feet long with a reasonable diameter (5-12"). I'll come up and grab some and get it out of your way.

Horrible driving conditions for the entire duration of my 7 hour drive to and from Connecticut today, it’s absolutely disgusting that there isn’t some sort of crossing between LI and CT, the trip would’ve taken 1/3rd of that time, but that’s another topic.

I drove home from Brattleboro VT, left there around 5, and it was absolutely horrible driving conditions. Of course when I got about a mile from home it pretty much stopped raining.
